RESEARCH I have been involved in a research project titled Support to relatives and carers of persons with dementia and behavioural disturbances at institution. A controlled study. The aim of the study was to test if improved ability to interpret the meaning of disturbing behaviour would lead to a reduction of the occurrence of the disturbing behaviour. The settings are one group dwelling for people with dementia and one comparable group dwelling as control. The intervention consisted of supervising sessions during one year and lectures focusing on behavioural disturbances. Methods used in research were interviews and observations of carers and patients combined with reflective talks about the observed interaction. Professor Astrid Norberg was the scientific leader of the project. My main duties have been data collecting on part time basis during 1998 and My doctoral thesis focused on patients and nurses encounter with impurity in nursing care. The historical perspective is important to understand the phenomena of purity and impurity today. My interest for the topic comes from working with data collected in a research project where retired employees from various health care professions were asked to narrate nursing care given around 1950 in a county in northern Sweden. This was the first article in my thesis. The scientific leader for the project was professor Astrid Norberg. The three following articles focus on living with malodorous exuding ulcers and caring for people with these ulcers. Wound care is demanding and challenging for nurses today and the bodily perspective, how the wounded body impacts one s self picture, is important to highlight. Nurses need knowledge and support to make assessments and provide the best treatments and care. I am now involved in a study focusing on patients with hard- to- heal wounds, and how to optimize the communication between hospitals and district nurses in benefit of the patients.
5 5(3) I have been involved in a previous study with Professor Majda Pahor, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, focusing on students perceptions of what knowledge they will need, and their perceptions of how they think they will need research knowledge in their coming profession. I am now involved in a project aiming to illuminate experiences of peer-learning within clinical settings at Umeå university. Interviews were performed with nursing students, enrolled nurses and registered nurses. VIII. ABSTRACTS AND PRESENTATIONS Lindahl, E (1997).
