For the first time in the EBA congress history, there will be a PAM room where Burn nurses, PT s, OT s and other professionals can meet each other and share information about new developments in their profession. We will have a few nursing sessions with nice presentations and case studies. An interactive rehabilitation session, a Burn Camp session, and there will be a lot of attention for Prevention projects too. The new part of the EBA website about Prevention will be in operation at the congress! If you have nice Prevention materials, please show it at the congress, on our booth or in the PAM room! So enough reasons to come to Vienna! No articles about Burn Camps this time: many camps are held during the summer period so we hope to receive reports later! However, the Burn Camp Committe is collecting information about activities for burn survivors all over Europe. We hope you will help us see our letter and questionnaire at page 4 and 5. There is an interesting article about The challenge of behavioural change in burns prevention on page 2, the first of many more prevention items we hope! We are still looking for new members in the Burn Camp, Prevention and PAM committee. Maybe we are looking for you?!? Kind regards, Mona, Carolyn and Anita Burn Camp / Prevention Committee PAGE 1
2 The challenge of behavioural change in burns prevention An example of an experience test from the Netherlands By: Eva van Zoonen, Dutch Burns Foundation. To prevent is better than to cure is an often heard expression in the Netherlands. This is in line with the mission of the Dutch Burns Foundation; to prevent burns and to keep the quality of life of burn victims as high as possible. The Dutch Burns Foundation has a 42 year long history of designing burn prevention programmes to keep burn accidents to a minimum. Our campaigns vary from education for parents to prevent them from drinking tea with their child on their lap, till promoting smoke alarms in the houses of the elderly. An important prevention programme is the organisation, together with other fire safety organisations, of the yearly Burn Prevention Weeks to promote the prevention of house fires. These weeks consist of a variety of fire safety initiatives coordinated by the Dutch Burns Foundation. In addition with the Burn Prevention Weeks, the website WatDoeJijBijBrand (How do you act if there is a fire) is designed every year with all kinds of information about how to prevent house fires. One of our biggest challenges is how to change the behaviour of people towards a safer behaviour. The last year s we have spent much time in increasing the knowledge about house fires and how to prevent them. Also, we spend much time in changing the attitude towards a more positive attitude about the importance of safety measures. But having the knowledge and having a positive attitude doesn t mean that someone automatically changes his or her behaviour towards a safer behaviour. One of the proven methods to change behaviour is by creating a situation in which people are able to imagine how it would be to actually be in this situation. For the Burns Prevention Weeks we placed an experience test on the website WatDoeJijBijBrand in which people could imagine how it is like to be in a house fire. The test starts with a short story and a picture about a fire in your house, followed by the question; is your smoke alarm activated? You might, for example, answer that you do not have a smoke alarm, whereupon the test will give you feedback about your answer. In a similar way the test treats the most important safety measures. The key question is always; imagine you are in this situation, what would you do? In this way, people are stimulated to actively think about fire safety. We used Social Media to promote the website with the experience test. A conducted survey showed that those who participated in the experience test, changed their behaviour more actively. For example, 20% more visitors practiced an escape route with their family, compared to those who only visited the website. Its seems that participation in an experience test stimulates a greater increase in behavioural changes than merely visiting the WatDoeJijBijBrand website. 3 Nursing in Burns - Meet with the 2013 Vienna/Austria EBA Congress. It is recognized that the care given to burn people is unique; and the nurses can profit from a sharing of experiment and expertise through a meeting of professionals of the sector. With this intention, we invite you to follow two particular sessions: 30 th August Room 4 Nursing session and the PAM Business Meeting Concern scientific presentations and promotion of the PAM Committee activities. 30 th August Room 5 Special Interest Meeting Nursing Concern a round table about nursing cares of a patient. Also a PAM Room is dedicated to the meeting of the Professionals Allied to Medicine. Don t hesitate to share with us, we want to hear from you! Burn Camp Committee Once again it s time to meet old friends and make new ones at the EBA congress. That means that we in the burn camp committee hope to hear news from you all about how your camps and clubs are meeting the challenges of helping burn survivors. We have several interesting presentations lined up, and are hoping for some general discussion and exchange of ideas. There are so many different aspects in burn camping and club programs, and hope you will bring some of your tips to share with others. The PAM, Burn Camp and Prevention committees are having a booth and a casual meeting room for you to stop by and meet others in the same areas of interest and swap stories, tips and ideas. We hope you take the opportunity to stop by. PAGE 3
4 Attention Please! Dear madam, sir, On behalf of the European Burn Association, we are collating information where in Europe activities for burn survivors after discharge are organised. We very much hope you will take the time to answer the questions below to help us with this task. Thanking you in advance for your time and efforts. Do you know of any organisation in your country, that has organised activities, like Burn Camps, for burn survivors after discharge? If so, would you be so kind to send us the name of the organisation with address details? If you are involved in such an organisation yourself we would appreciate you filling in the questionnaire on page 5 and sending it back to aboekelaar@rkz.nl Kind regards, Mona Lunke Carolyn Cripps Anita Boekelaar Burn Camp Committee of the EBA PAGE 4

6 To all the teams in all the burns centres over Europe! The 15 th European Burns Association congress is scheduled in Vienna, august 28 th 31 st. Have a look at the program: We tried to dedicate some sessions especially to our different Professions Allied to Medicine. (PAM) On behalf of the PAM committee, I m very proud and enthusiastic to present you this program and its 2013 innovations. Over the different quite classical sessions (rehabilitation, intensive care, surgery, scar, ) we set some innovative sessions. + During our last 2011 The Hague congress, a very dynamic group organised an interesting session designed for physiotherapists. This year, an OT-PT special interest session will be held on day 2, conducted by high level trained European physiotherapists. + On day 3 (30 th august) a special interest NURSING session is planned. In a dynamic exchange, the audience will have the opportunity to share its own approach and solution in that particular case presented at the start of the meeting. Maybe could we together establish a common nursing care plan? We want to inform you that new committee members are requested, an interesting opportunity to meet and exchange with colleagues from all over Europe. Please have a look below! Don t be afraid! You have the capacity and some knowledge to share with us. Please attend our PAM Room and our PAM business meeting where you will discover our activities and creations (e.g. recommendations & guidelines) You all Professionals Allied to Medicine, nurses, physiotherapists, dieticians, occupational therapists, pedagogues, psychologists, are kindly invited to register to our 15 th European Burns Association congress in Vienna at the end of august. Greeting We will be very pleased to meet you and have nice professional and relaxing moment. André MAGNETTE, chair, and all the members EBA PAM committee PAGE 6

After vote, you may become one of our members. It's strongly recommended that you are present on the meeting. 9 The European Burns Association Prevention Project. Throughout the world, burn injuries remain an important and growing health problem with specific age groups, particularly the under 10 years, over 50 s and ethnicity having injuries that seem to occur more frequently than those in other groups. Prevention education is the key to helping reduce these injuries. Promoting Prevention has always been one of the key objectives of the European Burn Association and we are pleased to announce that as of Spring 2012 the EBA is forming a Prevention Committee who will be working on producing a practical, and we hope you will agree, user-friendly Prevention section/page on the EBA web-site. At their recent bi-annual meeting, the PAM and Burn Camp Committee agreed to combine forces and work jointly on this exciting new initiative. Although the two Committees will continue to remain and work independently, the respective committee members will also collectively be known as the EBA Prevention Committee. Many very good projects and educational initiatives already exist and held in different countries. There is now an excellent opportunity to collate these for dissemination and promote what s best and available in those countries. How will this work? The EBA Website Prevention Page The Page will have two sections and will be aimed towards any interested and motivated parties wishing to champion Burn Prevention and Fire Safety covering all age groups and in varying situations. Section 1 - a Links page for Burn Prevention and Fire Safety information. Through the EBA membership, European countries will be invited to submit links to organisations already providing their community with Burn Prevention and Fire Safety information and resources such as: public information notices, teaching templates and games i.e. Fire Departments, Health Centres, Charitable Foundations, Scouts etc. The information and resources are encouraged to be in the country s native language and can include translations in other languages relevant for that particular country. These other languages can be listed as available. Each participating country will have a small section dedicated to them on the EBA Prevention website where these links will be published. PAGE 9
10 As the aim of the site is to reach as wide an audience as possible, the information should be suitable for downloading not just by burn care professionals but educators/schools, kindergartens, healthcare professionals working in the community as well as interested parents and other members of the general public Best Practice The Links page will act as a clearing-house to help signpost access to sites promoting best practice in the subject and it is imperative that the links submitted are known to be bone fide and the messages within are in accordance to those promoted by the EBA. Statistics As these form an important part of Burn prevention education, links to organisations providing burn statistics such as WHO and Euro-Safe and others will also be included. Other Links Suitable links from countries outside the EU will also be included if deemed appropriate by the Prevention Committee Section 2 It is intended to create a library of appropriate and easily downloadable images and illustrations for those who wish to develop their own Burn & Scald Prevention projects for community education. These images will come with their own safety messages in English. We hope you will all be willing to contribute material to help make the project a success!
