1 JOB DESCRIPTION JOB DESCRIPTION Medical Chief Director Nurse

2 GOSH Profile Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust (GOSH) is a national centre of excellence in the provision of specialist children's health care, currently delivering the widest range of specialist care of any children's hospital in the UK. It is the only specialist Biomedical Research Centre for paediatrics, the largest centre in the UK for children with heart or brain problems, and the largest centre in Europe for children with cancer. It works in partnership with the UCL Institute of Child Health (ICH), part of University College London, and together they form the largest paediatric research and teaching centre in the UK. The hospital at Great Ormond Street is the only exclusively specialist children's hospital in the UK. It does not have an Accident and Emergency department and only accepts specialist referrals from other hospitals and community services. The population of children and young people served by the hospital is characterised by those with multiple disabilities and/or health problems and rare and congenital conditions. Many children and young people need the help of different specialist teams. Improvements in health care and diagnosis mean that many children and young people have dramatically improved survival rates and more therapeutic options than was the case 10 years ago. Sadly though, many of the children and young people cared for at GOSH still have life-threatening or life-limiting conditions. The hospital receives over 283,000 patient visits (inpatient admissions or outpatient appointments) a year, and carries our approximately 18,800 operations each year. The hospital has 446 patient beds, including 44 intensive care beds (21 CICU, 15 PICU and 8 NICU). Many of the children and young people on our wards require high dependency care or are classed as ward intensive care, requiring one-to-one nursing. Around 4,100 full-time and part-time staff work at the hospital. The ICH has around 600 staff. Many senior staff have roles in both organisations. The hospital has approximately 63 paediatric specialties, the widest range of any hospital in the UK, which uniquely enables it to diagnose and pioneer treatments for children and young people with highly complex, rare or multiple conditions.

5 The Role The Chief Nurse has a distinctive leadership role across GOSH, ensuring the quality of the Trust s clinical care, and the safety of its patients are fundamental to its excellence. The Chief Nurse, with the Medical Director, has a leadership responsibility for advancing those areas which are critical to the Trust s ambition and sense of purpose. This individual is responsible for leading the nursing strategy, approach to care and nursing standards across the organisation and prioritising throughout the care needs of the Trust s patients and their families. They will professionally lead the Trust s nurses and allied health professionals and assume executive responsibility for all non-medical professional education across the Trust. Their role will be key inbringing these professionals together around a shared vision of the Trust s future and managing, through their team, the processes and structures that enable those professionals to succeed. This is a time of continued change at GOSH, with a new Chairman appointed to commence with the Trust later in the year; it represents an exciting opportunity to lead this much-admired and loved institution towards its vision of helping children with complex health needs fulfil their potential. 6 Main Responsibilities The Chief Nurse will: Contribute to the strategic and corporate direction and management of the Trust as an Executive Director; Provide professional advice to the Board and Chief Executive on nursing and allied health practitioner issues in accordance with national policy; Provide effective visible leadership of the Trust's nursing and allied health workforce and foster a culture which values continuing professional development that empowers nurses and allied health professionals to achieve excellence in the delivery of patient care; Provide corporate leadership for the delivery of nursing and non-medical education across the Trust; Provide leadership and management of the quality agenda, as the Trust s joint lead director for quality (with the Medical Director), including a strategic direction and management of the Quality and Patient Experience agenda; Work collaboratively with the Medical Director to develop a culture which embeds Clinical Quality and Governance and monitors its effectiveness; Have corporate responsibility for improving the Patient and Family Engagement and Experience in line with the Trust s Values through leadership of the patient experience team including PALS, Volunteer Services, Chaplaincy and Bereavement Services; Lead on the safeguarding of children, young people and adults throughout the Trust; Have corporate responsibility for Infection Prevention and Control ensuring effective infection prevention and control strategies are in place (the Director of Infection, prevention and Control (DIPC) reports to the Chief Nurse); Lead on the Learning Disability agenda for the organisation. Professional Leadership Provide effective visible leadership of the Trust's nursing and allied health workforce and foster a culture which values continuing professional development and research and empowers nurses and allied health professionals to achieve excellence in the delivery of patient care; Advise the Trust Board, Executive Team and divisional teams on professional nursing and allied health professional issues, including the changing opportunities for nursing roles and responsibilities; Ensure the maintenance of professional standards of care within the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Professional Practice and the Health and Care Professions Council Code of Professional Practice; Work with the Medical Director to develop clinical governance strategies, systems and processes and to ensure the active participation by all nursing and allied health professional staff; Manage and develop staff within the Nursing Directorate, Allied Health Practitioner Team and the Patient Experience Team to deliver the Trust strategy in line with the Trust values..

7 Main Responsibilities Corporate Leadership As an Executive Director of the Trust Board and member of the Executive Team, contribute to the management and strategic development of the Trust's services in accordance with local health needs, education, development and research priorities within available financial resources; Contribute to the development of the Trust's business planning process and the wider health community's health strategy by advising on the nursing implications of: The requirement for and the deployment and utilisation of nursing resources ensuring the provision of high quality, cost effective care within the Trust; The legislative requirements of the relevant statutory authorities on the provision of nursing care; Share corporate responsibility to promote the Trust within the wider community, developing sustainable partnerships within the multi-agency health and social care community; Represent the Trust at regional/national/international levels on professional nursing, allied health professional and corporate issues, developing partnerships, sharing best practice and integrating knowledge gained within the Trust; Participate in the Executive Director On-Call rota. Infection Prevention and Control Take corporate responsibility for the implementation of the Trust's annual prevention and control of infection annual programme; Provide assurance to the Trust Board that Infection Prevention and Control policies are fit for purpose and, working with the DIPC, ensure effective systems for the prevention and control of infection are embedded across the organisation and audited; Ensure that infection control has an appropriate high priority across the Trust and that the Trust Board and Executive Team are aware of issues concerning the prevention and control of infection and that these are considered when corporate decisions are taken. Service Development Lead the development of recruitment, retention and return to nursing strategies for the organisation which enhance job satisfaction, recruitment, retention and career development for nurses (working with other accountable executives); Lead on developing and reviewing workforce plans for nursing for the organisation, advising the Trust Board on issues of skill mix, deployment and utilisation of the

8 Main Responsibilities nursing and allied health profession workforce consistent with National guidance (working with other accountable executives);. Work with the Chief Finance Officer and Deputy CEO to identify and deliver clinical efficiencies, advising on the implications for service delivery; Support the Director of Development and Property Services to implement the national strategies for Hospital Cleanliness and Better Hospital Food. Organisational Development Ensure the visibility of senior management throughout regular "walkabouts" and other means of communication; Lead and support, in conjunction with other executive directors, the development of management skills and capabilities throughout the organisation; Act as an ambassador for the Trust and contribute to the wider health and organisational agenda in the region and nationally as appropriate. Risk Management Ensure that the highest standards of corporate and quality governance are maintained in the organisation; Ensure that robust risk management arrangements are in place which correctly identify key risks and how they will be managed; Ensure that a proactive approach to infection control is embedded into Clinical Divisions and reflected in the performance management system.

9 Person Specification The Trust is looking to attract an inspirational nursing leader who will be ambitious on its behalf, working with GOSH s world class nurses and allied health professionals to build an organisation which delivers truly excellent care in a sustainable way, and represent its nurses effectively, internally and externally. The Chief Nurse will: Qualifications/Professional Development Possess a degree or equivalent experience; Have a relevant professional nursing qualification; Offer evidence of recent management and leadership development and evidence of continuous professional and personal development; Have a Masters degree Knowledge and Experience Have demonstrable and substantial previous senior nursing and leadership experience; Have a demonstrable track record of achievement in quality and patients safety arena and in patient experience; Have experience of leading service and/or transformational change, and experience in the management of complex projects; Have experience of effective partnership and working with internal and external stakeholders; Have experience in the management of substantial budgets; Have experience of working with patients and the public to enhance and develop patient pathways; Have experience of implementing national and statutory requirements.
