The purpose for creating Insight is to share with our internal and external stakeholders -- information about the latest goings-on within the School of Nursing & Health Sciences. We will highlight relevant news, trends, updates, initiatives, & events. We look forward to achieving, celebrating and sharing our many individual and collective successes as we continue to educate our next generation of registered nurses, and actively participate in advancing the health of the Commonwealth. A Holiday Message from our Faculty Dear Friends and Colleagues, It has been an exciting year! Thank you for being a part of advancing the School of Nursing and Health Sciences upward, onward and forward. This year has been full of transformative change for the University and the School of Nursing & Health Sciences. We have seen and experienced how commitment, empathy, determination, collegiality, and solidarity can make a difference in the lives of our students, team, and colleagues. The workshop was held at the University of Texas School of Nursing in Austin, TX on November 2, Co-authored the article titled Embracing the Journey as New Faculty at Kentucky State University School of Nursing that was published in the Winter 2017 issue of the peerreviewed NBNANews. Graduate Director High School Day Student Advising Alumni Spotlight INFLUENZA VACCINATION School of nursing & health sciences faculty & students collaborated with the KSU student health center to administer flu shots during the Annual Thorobred Health Fair on Friday, October 19, Dr. Mary Ellen Broaddus, DNP, RN-BC Director for Undergraduate Programs -Presented at the Re-Imagining Healthcare Conference, November in San Antonio, Texas. Her presentation was titled Demonstration Project to Address Juvenile Drug Addiction. -Passed the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing board certification examination. As a result, Dr. Broaddus was awarded the credential: Registered Nurse-Board Certified (RN-BC). Ms. Lisa Turner, MSN Assistant Professor Co-authored the article titled Embracing the Journey as New Faculty at Kentucky State University School of Nursing that was published in the Winter 2017 edition of the peer-reviewed NBNANews. #KSUForward

3 The School of Nursing and Health Sciences will host a survey team from the Accreditation Commission in Education for Nurses (ACEN) on February 26-28, The purpose of the visit is to accreditation reaffirmation of the Associate and Baccalaureate undergraduate programs. We have partnered with CastleBranch to efficiently and securely manage our student records and documentation. The CastleBranch platform makes it easy for students to plan ahead and stay on top of all nursing school requirements including immunization tracking, background and drug screening, and much more. Sign in at In an effort to simplify and improve the admissions processes, reduce our carbon footprint, meet our recruitment goals, and maximize capacity we have partnered with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing to launch NursingCAS. Launched in 2010 the NursingCAS platform is the nation s only centralized application service for students applying to nursing programs at all levels from the bachelors to doctorate. It offers students a convenient way to research and apply to multiple participating nursing schools with a single online application. Visit to start your application for our AAS, BSN or DNP programs. RefWorks is a web-based bibliography and database manager that allows you to create your own personal database by importing references from text files or online databases and other various sources. You can use these references in writing papers and automatically format the paper and the bibliography in seconds. RefWorks is available to all nursing students enrolled at Kentucky State University. 4 2018 Pinning and Recognition Ceremony The School of Nursing and Health Sciences Pinning & Recognition ceremony was held in the David H. Bradford Hall of the Carl H. Smith Auditorium on May 11, Faculty presented nursing pins to 38 prospective graduates from the Associate of Applied Science program. Seven students were recognized for completing the curriculum requirements leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Highlights of the ceremony included a keynote address by Eric J. Williams, RN, DNP, FAAN, President of the National Black Nurses Association. Andrelle Joseph & Courtney Flannery received the Barbara Stivers Award, Lauren Semones & Terri Caldwell received the Patsy O. Turner Award, Michelle McElroy & Bethelyn Stanley received the Veneda Martin Award, and Cheyenne Halsey received the Dr. Juanita Fleming Award. A post-ceremony reception was held in the ballroom of the Carl M. Hill Student Center. Director for Graduate Nursing Programs HOMECOMING 2018 Kentucky State University hosted Miles College on October 13, During the football event faculty & students from the school of nursing & health sciences distributed customized education paraphernalia that focused on breast cancer awareness. The School of Nursing & Health Sciences would like to extend a warm welcome to the new Associate Chair & Director for Graduate Nursing Programs, Dr. Geraldine Q. Young, DNP, APRN, FNPBC, CDE. Dr. Young holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, a MSN from Alcorn State University, and a BSN from the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Dr. Young is board-certified as a family nursing practitioner and diabetes educator. She has served the nursing profession for more than 18 years as a clinician, educator and entrepreneur. Dr. Young is a National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties Fellow; recognized as a content expert by the American Nurses Credentialing Center; and serves on American Association of College of Nursing DNP Essentials advisory committee. 5 High School Day Faculty and staff from the school of nursing & health sciences attended the BRED Experience High School Day on Saturday, November 3, The primary goal of the BRED Experience is to expose high school students to the many wonderful opportunities that Kentucky State University provides. Materials about all of our nursing programs were available for all attendees. Novelty logo items included stress relief balls, ink pens, i-phone holders, and cups. Faculty Highlights Dr. Yolanda Powell-Young Chair and Professor -Was named Dean for the newly created College of Natural, Applied & Health Sciences. -Represented the National Black Nurses Association at the National Institutes of Health National Human Genome Research Institute Genomics Education for Healthcare Providers. The meeting brought together leading health care practitioners, clinical educators, and health care licensing and accrediting professionals to consider recommendations regarding overall genomics education and best strategies to support integrating genomics into practice for healthcare providers. -Agreed to serve on the Inter-Society Coordinating Committee for Practitioner Education in Genomics (ISCC). The ISCC s mission is to improve genomic literacy of healthcare providers and enhance the effective practice of clinical genomic medicine by facilitating interactions among the key stakeholders in genomics education. Member representatives are from societies, professional organizations, NIH institutes, industry as well as individuals with expertise in medical education. Student Advisement All pre-nursing and nursing students should be assigned a school of nursing advisor. The goal of a nursing advisor is to facilitate effective navigation of an academic pathway that leads to the successful application, admission and completion of the AAS, BSN or DNP nursing programs. 6 Alumni SPOT LIGHT For the inaugrual issue of Insight we spotlight alumni Dr. Joyce Newman Giger. In 1970, an illustrious career in nursing began when Dr. Newman Giger obtained an Associate Degree in Nursing from Kentucky State University, home of the mighty thorobreds. Dr. Newman Giger s education at Kentucky State University provided the solid academic foundation that has helped to excel a highly distinguished career in nursing. Dr. Newman Giger s accomplishments include that of President and CEO of American University of Health Science, CA; Professor of Nursing and Lulu Wolff Hassenplug Endowed Chair at University of California Los Angeles, CA; Professor of Graduate Studies at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, AL; Chair of the School of Nursing at Columbus State University, GA; and founding Dean of Health Professions - Nursing at Bethel College, IN, where she shaped the school s nursing programs through the successful attainment of regional and national accreditations. Dr. Newman Giger has authored approximately 185 articles, 14 book chapters and eight books on strategies to enhance the provision of culturallyappropriate care. Dr. Newman Giger has also developed a model for assessing cultural phenomena relevant to the delivery of culturally-appropriate care. Her best-selling textbook, Transcultural Nursing; Assessment and Intervention (8th ed.), has been widely adopted by schools of nursing in the U.S. and abroad. Her model for transcultural health care has been utilized in approximately 557 nursing and medical texts to teach health care professionals how to assess cultural values and evaluate the impact of said values on health and disease behaviors. Dr. Newman-Giger s illustrious research focuses on genetic indices and other physiological predictors of coronary heart disease among pre-menopausal African-American women as they relate to designing culturally competent interventions to stop the phenotypical expression of risk indices for the development of coronary heart disease. Specifically, variables associated with gene-environmental interactions, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and the metabolic syndrome relative to the development of coronary heart disease. She has received numerous awards and accolades including Outstanding Research in Minority Health Care by the Southern Nursing Research Society. The National Black Nurses Association elected Dr. Giger into the Institute of Excellence and bestowed the prestigious honor of Trailblazers in Nursing and Healthcare. Dr. Giger received a White House nomination and subsequent appointment to the Advisory Council of the National Institutes for Health/ National Institute for Nursing Research. Dr. Giger has served as Chair-elect of the Expert Panel on Cultural Nursing, Co-Chair of the Expert Panel on Cultural Competence, and member of the Expert Panel on Genetics for the American Academy of Nursing. 7 Alumni Spotlight continued also served as Chair for the Council on Cultural Diversity and the Council on Community- Based Long-Term Care for the American Nurses Association. Dr. Giger has served as Editor for the Journal of the National Black Nurses Association since She was elected as a Fellow to the American Academy of Nursing in Dr. Newman Giger is a thorobred exemplar.
