1 JOB DESCRIPTION 1. JOB IDENTIFICATION Job Title: Department(s): Job Reference Number: Radiographer Radiology PTB JOB PURPOSE To provide an efficient and effective diagnostic imaging service within the Department of Radiology. Undertake radiographic examinations to the highest possible diagnostic quality and provide a high quality of patient care. To adhere to NHS Borders and Departmental policies, procedures and protocols. To participate in the departmental out of hours duties. To participate in the training of student Radiographers. To liaise with A&C, ATO and portering staff for the smooth running of the department. 1
2 3. ORGANISATIONAL POSITION Lead Radiographer Modality Superintendents Senior Radiographers Radiographers THIS POST 4. SCOPE AND RANGE Performance of a wide range of radiographic procedures and examinations as indicated below. Act in the role of Operator and Practitioner as defined by IR(ME)R. Prioritising and authorising requests in line with departmental protocols. Commitment to extended day working Participate in the departmental out of hour s duties. MAIN DUTIES RESPONSIBILITIES Undertake radiographic examinations for In-patient, Out-patient and Accident and Emergency departments. This includes both general department, CT, mobile and theatre examinations. These examinations can be undertaken either within core hours or out of hours. Ensure cleanliness and tidiness of workplace 2
3 Example of such examinations include: Chest &Abdomen Axial skeleton Facial Extremity Image intensifier work in theatre OPG Limited contrast examinations will also be performed in conjunction with Consultant Radiologists and Advanced Practitioner Radiographers CT. Equipment. Carestream PACS and Radiology Management System Fuji CR Plate readers and daylight processors Phillips Omni Diagnost Eleva fluoroscopy unit Shimadzu x-ray equipment in the twin general rooms 2x Zhiem Mobile Image Intensifiers 2x Shimadzu mobile x-ray units, 1x GE AMX4 mobile x-ray unit Siemens Somoton AS+ CT scanner Expectation Must be prepared to participate in an appraisal process. To consider personal and professional needs and translate these into realistic annual objectives and implementation plans, i.e., continuing professional development. To be prepared to undertake any formal study or informal training required to fulfil the needs of the post. This includes self-study. To attend such meetings or lectures as required, ensuring an up-to-date approach and attitude to work. 6. SYSTEMS AND EQUIPMENT Equipment. Carry out clinical work using a variety of imaging equipment within own area of responsibility and other areas as required. All imaging equipment requires a great degree of accuracy and precision. It is to be used under strict operator and manufacture s guidelines and in compliance with statutory regulations. Perform Quality Assurance Tests in compliance with statutory and manufacturers guidelines. Clinical Systems. Input of patient information into paper records and computerised clinical systems. Archiving patient data / films as per departmental protocol. Use Hospital Information/radiology Information system to input data, access clinical information. 3
4 7. DECISIONS AND JUDGEMENTS Accountable for own professional actions. Works within Codes of Practice, occupational standards and Policies and Procedures. Coordinates and prioritises the workload in own area of responsibility in response to varying hospital / departmental demands. Uses clinical judgement and experience to ensure optimal images are acquired and patient care is focused on an individual basis. Uses clinical experience and knowledge to justify General Radiological examinations in accordance with the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2000 (IRMER). Regulations. 8. COMMUNICATIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS To establish clear lines of communication and ensure co-operative planning and decision making. Superintendent Radiographers. To work closely with the Superintendent Radiographers and ensuring any problems are reported and that department protocols and procedures are followed. Radiologist. To assist Consultant Radiologists in interventional procedures ensuring efficiency and quality of service. Ancillary and Clerical. To work in close relationship with the A&C staff to ensure correct departmental procedures are adhered to in a timely manner Portering. To work in close relationship with the portering staff to ensure that patients are kept in the department for the minimum time and that during their stay they are as comfortable as possible. Clinical and Nursing staff. To liaise with nursing staff to ensure patient comfort and well being during their stay in the department. When visiting wards to perform duties to adhere to ward protocols. During out of hours duties communicate with the referring clinicians 9. PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB Long periods of not being able to sit down particularly during standby shifts. Frequent movement of x-ray and associated equipment. Frequent requirement for prolonged concentration and accuracy while operating equipment. Occasional exposure to distressing circumstances. 4
5 Frequent light to moderate lifting during clinical duties. Manual Handling and Basic Life Support training is mandatory. 10. MOST CHALLENGING/DIFFICULT PARTS OF THE JOB Dealing with patients in a potentially stressful situation. Having to cope with equipment breakdowns. Working alone during out of hours. Coping with the demands of a high work load 11. KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO DO THE JOB Essential specification Must be a qualified Radiographer, i.e., DCR or BSc Honours Must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Personal specification: - Flexible attitude - Evidence of ongoing educational and personal development. - Evidence of commitment to professional issues and/or interest. - Team Player - Demonstrates individual initiative - Demonstrates responsibility - Demonstrates work experience within DGH settings - Demonstrates enthusiasm for work place development 5
6 TERMS AND CONDITIONS Grade and salary: Hours of work Annual leave: Public Holidays: Superannuation: Band 5: 22,218-28,746 per annum Permanent Please note that there will also be a fixed term post for 9 months (maternity leave cover) available 37.5 hours per week 27 days per annum Details of other types of leave entitlement (such as sick leave) are set out in the Agenda for Change handbooks. 8 days per annum on dates designated by NHS Borders Details of other types of leave entitlement (such as sick leave) are set out in the Agenda for Change handbook.
