21 My name is Leza Junnila, I come from a background of economic geology and mining. I grew up near New Idria, California. the Clear Creek area. I wish to address the issue of gems and minerals in There is still a vast reserve of gems and minerals available to be found and collected in the Clear Creek area. Some localities are virtually untouched, because they are remote or difficult to access but that does not mean they are depleted. Clear Creek is the world s only source for the gem Benitoite and its sister Fresnoite, while it is true that if you are lucky you might find a microscopic blob in Rush Creek above Fresno, the only world source for Fresnoite crystals is Clear Creek. The Benitoite Mine still has many years of production waiting in its mountain I can say this without doubt since I have seen the drill records. Clear Creek is unique in the world in the sense of the vast variety of gems and minerals that can be found and collected in such a small area. I know because I have lived, worked and mined in Clear Creek for over forty years. Those gems and minerals supported me and my family and paid our bills. Over the years I have guided many hundreds of field trips into Clear Creek and each one was an adventure because we never knew what might turn up under our pick.
