2 Memorandum TO: FROM: DATE: RE: Burgess Hanson, City Manager Kara Petty, CPRP, Director of Parks and Recreation December 2, 2014 Commission Meeting State of Florida DEP Recreational Trails Program Grant Application FY14-15 Johnie McKeithen Multi-Purpose Trail The purpose of this memorandum is to obtain City Commission approval to enter into an Agreement between the City of Deerfield Beach (City) and State of Florida Department of Environment Protection for the Recreational Trails Program (RTP) Grant in the amount of $50,000. The RTP is a federally funded competitive grant program that provides financial assistance to agencies, for the development of recreational trails. The Deputy Secretary signed the 2014 RTP priority list for more than $4,000,000 which funds 26 new RTP opportunities. The City of Deerfield Beach was recently selected as one of the recipients awarded this grant funding. Johnie McKeithen Park is a local community park with the northern annex situated along the Hillsboro canal, which exhibits a natural habitat and a sheltered area; the southern annex boasts a large picnic shelter for family type activities. Johnie McKeithen Park is a highly utilized park where families come to the park to enjoy activities such as walking, biking, pick-up games of soccer or football and children can enjoy outdoor fun at the playground in a safe and clean environment. The proposed improvements include a multi-use trail/exercise path that would greatly enhance the park qualities, provide additional functionality with four exercise stations installed along the trail, and create cohesion of the northern and southern annexes to better serve the community. The Parks and Recreation Department is seeking to obtain the City Commission approval of an agreement with the Recreational Trails Program; and to approve the City Manager authorization to execute said agreement. If you have any questions, or need any other information, please contact my office at
