2 Talk by Rtn Maj Gen Retd. Chari on Overview of the Construction Industry On Sunday the 1st of April 2012 Rtn. Chari delivered his classification talk at the Boat club. He gave a brief overview of the Indian Construction sector a field where Rtn. Chari, a former Director General of Works at Army, has proved his mettle. Rtn. Chari started by highlighting the relevance of the topic of his speech. Construction is the second largest contributor to the nation s GDP. It is a very large job creator, employing close to 13% of the workforce. He gave some colour on the structure of the industry, which has a small number of large companies and a large number of small companies that are unorganized. From this macro overview, he seamlessly narrowed down to three key issues that need to be addressed for the healthy evolution of this industry institutional mechanisms, manpower development and technology. The lack of effective institutional mechanism for evaluating and regulating the industry is affecting the industry s ability to source credit to fund its growth. The contractors who lack training and sophistication are interested in making a quick buck. This results in exploitation of low cost, low skilled labour and a finished product that needs rework or is not durable. The technology that the industry uses is out-dated and there seems to be little impetus from the industry participants to modernize the process. For example, increasing adoption of pre-fabricated, assemble-at-site methodologies could make the construction process quick and cost-effective but somehow the industry is reluctant to change its old ways. After the brief but insightful speech, Rtn. Chari opened up the floor for Q&A, which saw a high level of participation from the audience. He elaborated on some of the finer aspects of the industry and impressed the audience with his depth in the topic. He retired from the stage with a big round of applause and the attendees left the room much wiser. Contributed by Rtn Kiran Sebastian
3 IPL Moneyball Sunday April 8th, we had an insightful talk on sports analysis and its role in IPL. The popularity of the talk could be judged by the relentless barrage of questions from the audience. Rotarian Subramanian Ramakrishnan Ramky is the founder of SportsMechanics, dealing with Analysis and Intelligence in the game of cricket. He is a coach who brought scientific tools in the coaching methodologies of the game. In the year 2000, Ramky became a pioneer in introducing Video Analysis solutions. His company is credited with developing the world s first predictive analysis framework for cricket. His work with Indian cricket team brought change in planning and preparations but also ensure that technology is well embraced and used effectively. Ramky and his company sport mechanics have initiated many breaking innovations in sports technology using video analysis. He has worked with all the cricketing greats like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, MS Dhoni and sports coaches like Dennis Lillee, Bob Simpson, John Wright, Greg Chappell, Hanumanth Singh and TA Sekhar. He talked about the emergence of IPL as a showcase for India s sporting might and the world class organizational ability. Led by Lalit Modi in the initial years, IMG and BCCI got to together to back this extremely successful domestic circuit club cricket. With the huge success that has been achieved over the years, sport has got industry status. The 20/20 format is short but extremely entertaining. It has been greeted with a lot of skepticism by the purists of the game that it would kill abilities in a player to play test cricket. Over the last five years, this myth has been effectively countered by throwing up players like David Warner who moved successfully into test cricket starting off as a 20/20 player. It has also suddenly brought the cricket playing nations like Bangladesh and Ireland who were playing in the fringes to limelight. In fact ICC is realizing that it is far easier taking this game global in this simple format. Fame in IPL was also feared to corrupt the young and aspiring players. However, IPL has proved to be a good training ground for the young players who are taught not only compete along-side famous international players, but it has also helped them cope with fame and fortune early in their careers. Sports Mechanics has helped players and coaches with to improve the games by constantly adding value to the game with numbers and situation analysis. They help interpret the changing situation and lets players focus on execution rather than grapple with the dynamic changing complexities. It also helps the team managers to persuade players to align with team interests above personal interests by offering facts based advice. With the numbers analysis availability the concern now is if players will eventually become robots only executing on the directions. The need for technical coaches is also being challenged as there is no time for technical coaching during the game. It is fast becoming a game of the mind as the skills are now mental rather than technical or physical. Mind experts like world famous Rudi Webster are being used to enhance performance. Clearly IPL is transforming the sport not only in India but also in the international arena. It is bringing cricket to rival the other big sports like NBA, Football to a truly international scale. We can see the role of SportsMechanics increasing significantly. SportsMechanics has truly carved a very important niche for itself. Here s wishing Ramky and team greater glory and higher impact!! 4 Volleyball Tournament for The Visually Challenged Students in Chennai The Rotaract club of Drishti, which has been formed and become a part and parcel of the Rotary Family has successfully conducted a one-day volleyball tournament for the visually challenged students studying in and around the city on Sunday, 18th March, at the Loyola college ground Before we speak about the details of the tournament, it would be more appropriate to highlight the uniqueness of this budding club. Already we are all aware that the Rotary Club of Madras Coromandel is doing yeoman service for the visually challenged students all over Tamil Nadu through Karna Vidya library. Having a similar motto in mind, in order to cater to not only the needs, but also mould and exhibit the inner potentials, besides academics, of the visually challenged students, this club was envisioned and formed on the 3rd of February. In fact this club is an extended platform for all the visually challenged friends. Professor A.Vijaykumar from Presidency college and Professor K.Raghuraman from Nandanam arts college were appointed as the staff coordinators of the club. The induction programme was held in a grand manner at Gandhinagar club on 17th February The one-day volleyball tournament was the first project of this club. Six boys teams and three girls teams participated very enthusiastically in the game. Rtn. Manikandan and Professor-cum-coordinator Mr.Vijaykumar started the game by rolling the ball into the court around 10 in the morning. The knock-outs and the semifinals took place before lunch and the finals for both boys and girls was held in the presence of Dr. M.S.Nagarajan who motivated the sportsmen before the play began.the valediction ceremony was held at 4:30 in the evening.our honorable chief guest Dr.M.S.Nagarajan presided over the function. He encouraged the sportsmen to participate greater in number in the Paralympics games. Rotarian Balasubramaniam, President of the Rotary Club of Madras Coromandel gave us a thought provoking speech on the occasion. Several other dignitaries had also attended the function. The Big-boosters from the boys team and Jasmine from the girls clinched the cup. The winners are given cash prizes, shields and certificates and each participant was given a T-shirt and a participation certificate. A photo of the game came up in the New Indian Express on 19th march. We would be failing in our duty if we did not acknowledge the enormous support in all forms rendered by our parent club, the Rotary Club of Madras Coromandel. We also express our sincere gratitude to the Loyola college who extended their helping hands whole-heartedly. Given the grand success of this project, it s for sure that this club will carry out many constructive projects in the coming days. 5 FUTURE VISION IS HERE! You may have heard of it. It is Future Vision, which is The Rotary Foundation s new grant model to be effective from Rotary Year If the date strikes you as remote, for your information, Future Vision is already here, in as many as 100 Rotary Districts, spread all over the world. Of these, 7 Districts are in India and 2 are in Tamilnadu Districts 2980 and The 100 Districts called Pilot Districts were carefully selected and, as pilots, they have agreed to participate in Future Vision, consisting of just two types of grants called District Grants and Global Grants for three years , with the objective of thorough testing of the new model. The two type grant model will replace the existing grant model. For example, the popular Matching Grant of TRF will not be around from , as also the District Simplified Grant. The new grant structure will be implemented for all clubs from 1 July Every club, therefore, has to prepare itself for Future Vision. The subject is important enough for as many as four workshops planned in the approaching RI Convention in Bangkok. To appreciate the significance of the new model, let us consider this it took nearly 35 years (1965 to 2000) for the first 10,000 Matching Grant approvals. In just 4 years (2000 to 2004), the second 10,000 Matching grant approvals were given. It is easy to imagine the acceleration in recent times of the applications and approvals which TRF has come to handle. The internet has further intensified pressure at TRF headquarters, The tiny $ 2,000 limit by way of District Simplified Grant left for Districts and uploading of every project requiring a Matching Grant of $ 5,000 and above to TRF, is sure to have inundated it with too many applications to handle, with some they cannot well understand. Let us get real, Evanston may know about tornado but unlikely to be familiar with tsunami, which is better left to the concerned District or Districts to decide. It has set the wise heads thinking about a more effective and efficient way to aid projects with greater impact and sustainable outcomes. With polio hopefully history, more funds will be available with the Foundation, which can handle fewer projects that need higher funding. Others can be left to the District. Thus has evolved the two grant model District Grants and Global Grants. District Grants allow clubs and districts to address immediate needs in their communities and abroad. Global Grants, we are told, fund large scale international humanitarian projects, vocational training teams and scholarships that have sustainable, measurable outcomes in one or more areas of focus. The devil, as they say, is in the details. Since I intend to participate in the Future Vision workshops at the Bangkok Convention, I will have more to say on this later. However, it is interesting Global Grant starts at a minimum of $ 30,000. By implication, District Grant should be able to consider projects needing grant funding upto $ 30,000, which is really a huge mark-up. For the purpose, TRF has to put more funds with the Districts. This it proposes to do by adding 50% more to the usual SHARE to the Districts. SHARE is 50% of Annual Program Fund contributions and investment income from both Annual Program Fund and Permanent fund contributions of a District, returned to the District after a 3 year funding cycle. Rotary is highly organized and takes care to put in place all the required organization, policies and procedures ahead of time. It enjoins on every club to prepare itself for the new grant system from itself, through a suggested timeline. Much of it relates to Learning ( ), Train, Qualify & Prepare ( ) and Participate ( ). There is even a Club MOU, an agreement between the Club and the District to ensure proper implementation of grant activities and management of grant funds. Though proposed originally for the pilot, it may come to stay from We can expect greater emphasis on fund-raising by the District since they need to find more funds for more projects. Since they stand to get a higher percentage of SHARE, there will greater motivation to raise more funds. With more funds at the disposal of the District, wee can also expect a rise in the scale and scope of club projects and a better understanding of projects and their processing since many can be approved by the District itself. The question to a highly contributing club like ours is are we ready? If we are, we will be doing more, better and bigger projects from Contributed by President Rtn Bala
