3 The 2 nd IEEE Computing Colloquium at ATRI saw participation from various colleges around Hyderabad. The Colloquium was presided by Dr. Prabhu G Benakop (Director, ATRI), Mr. Aditya Rao (Chair, IEEE Computer Society Hyderabad section), Dr. Gunasekhar Reddy (Membership Development Chair, IEEE Hyderabad Section) and Mr. B. Rakesh (Chapter Advisor). The event started with the inauguration of IEEE ATRI Computer Society Student Chapter by the esteemed chief guests of the event Mr. Aditya Rao, Chair, IEEE Computer Society Hyderabad Section and Dr. Gunasekhar Reddy, Membership Development Chair, IEEE Hyderabad Section. 4 The first session of the day started with the technical talk presented by Mr. Aditya Rao Chair of IEEE Computer Society Hyderabad section on the topic Disciplines of Computing and Advances. Mr. Aditya Rao has been with Oracle for over 8 years and is currently working as a Development Manager. His area of research interests includes Service computing and specifically in the areas of Service Oriented Architecture, Web Services, Business Process Orchestration and Management. 5 Mr. Aditya Rao began his speech saying computing is a collection of multiple disciplines. It evolved in two phases - prior 1990 s and post 1990 s. He said before 1990 s there was a landscape called Computer Engineering which grew rapidly and became accepted into family. He added that computing is used to attack a wider range of complex problems; because of it creating reliable software becomes more difficult. Later he enlightened the students about different fields of Computing such as Information Technology and Software Engineering. He said IT emphasis is only on technology than the information it conveys whereas Software Engineering applies engineering to complex problem. He concluded his speech by showing how much knowledge each person should have in fields like embedded systems. The session was applauded and well received by the students and they came to know various computing disciplines through it. IEEE ATRI Computer Society Student Chapter Page 5

6 After the first technical talk by Mr. Aditya Rao, it was followed by Membership Drive session by Dr. Gunasekhar Reddy- Membership Development Chair of IEEE Hyderabad Section. He gave a talk on Benefits of Joining IEEE to the students. Dr. V. Gunasekhar Reddy is Deputy Inspector General of Police and Addl. Director (Police Commns.) Retd. AP Police, Hyderabad. He is presently working as Consultant for Multi National Organizations for Secure Communications. Dr. Gunasekhar Reddy delivering the talk The session included the advantages and benefits of IEEE membership and its fee details, resources available for members at student level, importance of IEEE membership after graduation and how IEEE helps an individual in generating enough leadership qualities. He also shared his valuable experiences during his association with IEEE. All the students got a good insight of IEEE and its benefits and got valuable suggestions from Dr. Gunasekhar Reddy about their future. IEEE ATRI Computer Society Student Chapter Page 6

7 Post Lunch, the second and the last technical talk of Day 1 began on the topic Get Inspired! Learn Ruby given by Mr. Arun Vydianathan, founder of Ostriya labs. Mr. Arun has 9 years experience working in software development with companies like Oracle and Infosys. Arun was involved in the design and development of many leading products in Oracle E-Business Suite. He is a Post Graduate in Computer Applications, certified Java Programmer. Presently he is running his own software consulting specializing in Ruby on Rails. Mr. Arun receiving the memento from Dr. Prabhu G Benakop Mr. Arun began his talk saying Ruby on Rails is an open source web framework that's optimized for programmer happiness and sustainable productivity. He said rails adage of "convention over configuration" results in a development process that is nimble, agile, and fun. So what might have taken previously weeks or months to develop can be produced in a matter of days using Rails. IEEE ATRI Computer Society Student Chapter Page 7

8 He said a software system consists of interactions between people and systems or between systems, and each such interaction reveals a behavior of the system a behavior which is agreed upon by the stakeholders and software developers. He continued saying gaps invariably develop between the understanding of the system by the stakeholders and the developers, resulting in software not meeting the requirements. Later, He concluded his speech by briefing about Behavior Driven Development (BDD) which helps to keep the focus on the behavior right through the development process by simplifying the language. The session was really interesting one and everyone praised the speaker for providing in depth knowledge regarding ruby language. Thus the first day ended on a bright note with students getting to learn different computing disciplines, benefits of joining IEEE and a new technology in the form of ruby on rails. The second day of colloquium witnessed several interesting talks by high profile speakers from industry as well as education field. IEEE ATRI Computer Society Student Chapter Page 8

9 The first session of the second day began with an awareness talk on Women In Engineering (WIE) by Mrs. Madhumita Chakravarti Chair of WIE IEEE Hyderabad Section. Mrs. Madhumita Chakravarti completed her M. Tech in Microwaves from Institute of Radio Physics and Electronics, Kolkata University. She worked in Sameer, Chennai, Navigational Electronics Unit of Osmania University and ARM, Hyderabad before joining RCI, DRDO. Mrs. Madhumita began the talk by speaking about WIE and its benefits. Later, she highlighted various issues of status of Women in India and abroad. She said most of the women opt for teaching profession. She added according to survey in 2006 only 3.9% of women entered into organization and 16.2% entered into an Engineering field. Later, she enlightened the various stages of women in their lifetime. 10 She later discussed the need for formation of WIE group in the college and explained the steps for the formation of it. Our Director Sir was quick to respond and he agreed to form WIE group in the college. Soon, ATRI will see the birth of WIE affinity group in the campus. At the end, the session turned out to be a delight for all the women who participated in the talk and due to it they became more aware about WIE affinity group and its benefits. Mrs. Madhumita Chakravarti along with Organizers and Volunteers Post Tea, the first technical talk was presented by Dr. Atul Negi Associate Professor in University of Hyderabad on the topic Advances in the wireless networks. Dr. Atul Negi is presently an Associate Professor at Dept. of Computer and Information Sciences, AI Lab, University of Hyderabad. He completed M.Sc. (Engg.) from IISC, Bangalore and was awarded Doctorate from the University of Hyderabad. IEEE ATRI Computer Society Student Chapter Page 10

11 Dr. Atul Negi enlightened the students by presenting an overview of technology. He gave a brief description about nodes types and link types. Node types comprised of wireless routers, gateways, printers, mobile clients and stationary clients. Link types comprised of intra mesh wireless links, stationary client s access, mobile client access and Internet access links. Later, he explained the various differences between Mesh vs. Adhoc networks and Mesh vs. Sensor networks. Mr. Atul Negi delivering the talk After the introduction, he explained the various applications of wireless technologies and its uses in different fields. He then gave a brief description by comparing wireless technology with the existing technologies. Later he spoke about the challenges that exist in wireless networks by briefing about Medium access control, Network layer and transport layer. He also spoke about the security related to wireless networks, the network management and their geo location. Mr. Atul Negi ended his speech by laying emphasis on current state of art of wireless networks and its usage in various companies and many universities. The students were highly elucidated by this session as it could relate very much with their interests. IEEE ATRI Computer Society Student Chapter Page 11

12 The second technical talk was presented by Mr. Sabyasachi Ghosh from Oracle, India on the topic Introduction to web services. Mr. Sabyasachi Ghosh graduated from University College of Engineering, A Deemed University, Burla, Orissa with Computer Science and Engineering as Major. He is currently working for Oracle India and has 5 years of Industry experience. Mr. Ghosh began his talk by briefing about OSI model and its various layers. He gave a brief introduction about the sockets, RPC, XML and its differences with HTML. Later, he explained about web services which is a piece of business logic, located somewhere on the Internet and accessible through standard based internet protocols such as HTTP or SMTP, the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) which is a flexible set of design principles used during the phases of systems development and integration of computing and the SOAP which stands for simple object access protocol and is based on XML. 13 He concluded his speech by giving brief introduction about HTML and REST (Representational State Transfer). The session was very interesting and was highly applauded by the students. IEEE ATRI Computer Society Student Chapter Page 13

14 Post Lunch, the last technical talk of the 2 nd IEEE Colloquium began on the topic Introduction to Project Management presented by Mr. Rahul Dronamraju. Rahul Dronamraju is a Market Research Analyst and Project Coordinator at Tachyon Communications Inc., an IT consulting firm specializing in strategic management consulting and project management. Mr. Rahul explained the concepts of Project management in a very lucid manner and instantly strikes a chord with the students by using the examples of day to day activities. The whole session was very interactive and informative and each and every student present in the session enjoyed it as it helped them to understand the crucial concepts of Project Management in a better way. 15 Thus the Colloquium ended on a high which saw the participation of nearly 220 students from various colleges to listen to the talks of distinguished lectures given by high profile speakers. The feedback received from the participants and the various speakers was overwhelming and they praised the whole team for organizing it in a very efficient manner. 17 It was second time in 2011 where IEEE ATRI Computer Society Student Chapter played host to the IEEE Computing Colloquium in the ATRI campus after the success of 1 st IEEE Computing Colloquium in January. The overall response to both the Computing Colloquiums has been very encouraging and IEEE ATRI Computer Society Student Chapter looks forward in hosting many such IEEE Computing Colloquiums on different technologies in the future while taking pride in its past glory.
