2 4th ANNUAL STUDENT BRAGGING RIGHTS DESIGN COMPETITION COMPETITION DESIGN BRIEF AND APPLICATION Open to all schools within the IDSA Midwest District. Designs will be presented in St. Louis on Sat. 3 4th ANNUAL STUDENT BRAGGING RIGHTS DESIGN COMPETITION COMPETITION GOALS & OVERVIEW: The goal of this competition is to provide a fun, competitive environment for student designers from among the colleges and universities of the Midwest District. Additionally, this competition aims to provide students the opportunity to produce and present their designs within a public forum while adding to their portfolio of work. Student entrants are encouraged to work as teams within their schools to collaborate across disciplines. Additionally, this event provides the students an opportunity to network with members of the IDSA-STL chapter and community and to showcase their talents before a panel of expert judges while at the same time enhancing professional exposure. THE CHALLENGE: What is the necessary evolution of the library experience over the next 30 years? The way society accesses information is changing at an alarming rate. Brick- and-mortar institutions housing physical information is on the decline. Internet usage, e-readers, and data storage have all affected the way we use our modern libraries and they continue to evolve as institutions look for new ways to utilize the space and keep information accessible to the public. Attendance may be down, but a visitor to these spaces today has access to much more than a catalog of books as per previously conceived limitations. So how will great design impact the library experience of the future? What products, tools, architecture, or systems might impact the way the public accesses books and information? How will these institutions build public interest and revenue? Imagine the library of this future, and present your innovations. THE TASK Conceptualize, develop and deliver an innovative product solution while imagining the relevant library experience of Your transformative solution should seek to improve the way a user interacts with a public library. Cross-disciplinary collaborations are encouraged. Additional considerations may address the library staff, architecture, or community outreach. Design with public consumption of information in mind. Your team must identify a target market, and be able to discuss possible secondary markets if applicable. How might your solution build revenue for the institutions that use them? How much do you think it would it cost to implement? Discuss the business applications of your design. While software solutions will not be excluded, teams should feel challenged to present a complete user experience. 3

4 ELIGIBILITY 4th ANNUAL STUDENT BRAGGING RIGHTS DESIGN COMPETITION The competition is open to all students currently enrolled in a design based curriculum. Each group will represent their respective institution as a single entity, competing for the coveted traveling Bragging Rights Trophy, and cash prize. At the school level, professors may decide which concept to submit for final judging but only ONE concept per institution may be submitted for the competition. Some schools have chosen to incorporate this challenge into their curriculum with great success. PARTICIPATION Work in groups of two or more to develop and deliver a proof-of-concept on Saturday, October 4th Confirmation of entry in the competition is due to IDSA-STL by Friday, Sept. 12, 2014 in the form of a completed application and $75 entry fee, payable to IDSA. Applications may be received via , but registration must be mailed and postmarked no later than Sept. 12. Please refer to the application section for more information on entering the competition. DESIGN CRITERIA Entries must address innovation and creativity in solving the library experience challenge at the consumer level. Entries must include examples of market research, which will be used to inform and support the designed solution. Entries must be submitted by groups of at least TWO designers. Only 1 design submission per school is allowed. 4

5 DELIVERABLES 1. POSTER 4th ANNUAL STUDENT BRAGGING RIGHTS DESIGN COMPETITION 24 by 36 mounted on foam board Summary of solution Supporting visuals (renderings, sketches, photographs, ect.) School and sponsor logos Team member names 2. PRESENTATION 10 minutes or less to be delivered at the October bragging rights event..ppt or.pdf slide presentation Prior entrants have included video content as part of their presentation. A video of 60 seconds or less is encouraged, but not required. Bring a backup copy of all presentation media on a thumb-drive. 3. PHYSICAL MOCK UP Optional as a component of the presentation to further visualize your solution. Examples include 3D Prints, foam carvings, cardboard mock-ups... If your mock-up cannot be transported, detailed photographs are encouraged as part of your poster or presentation. JUDGING CRITERIA 1. CREATIVITY & INNOVATION OF IDEA To what extent does the concept deliver a unique solution based on the problem/parameters presented? How relevant is the concept among existing products? Is this a feasible product solution? 2. DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT PROCESS To what extent does the design team follow a logical, thorough and well-researched process to reach a deliverable product solution? Did the process support and inform the final solution? Was the design process clearly communicated in their presentation materials? 3. COMMUNICATION OF IDEA To what extent does the design team clearly deliver their concept in a captivating way? How attractive are the visuals used to activate interest in the designed solution? How well does the team field Q&A from the judging panel? 5

6 4th ANNUAL STUDENT BRAGGING RIGHTS DESIGN COMPETITION EVENT TIMELINE : Detailed Schedule Forthcoming Design concepts will be presented before a multi-disciplinary panel of creative professionals on October 4th, 2014 at the St. Louis Central Library. Students should plan to arrive for set up at 11am. JURY & JUDGING PROCESS Judging is private. The judging panel will be composed of a group of creative experts and design professionals that have been selected by IDSA-STL. The judging panel is responsible for the selection of the award recipients based on the aforementioned evaluation criteria. The judging panel s decision is final. The evaluation of the individual designs with regards to the evaluation criteria will not be published. PRIZES All design submissions designs have the opportunity to win the prestigious 2014 Bragging Rights Future Libraries Innovation Award. Each team will receive professional exposure, and the opportunity to exhibit their work in front of an audience of their peers. The institution represented by the winning design group will hold the traveling Bragging Rights Trophy for the school year as well as a cash award. DEADLINE The deadline for registration is September 12, 2014 as per the terms listed under participation. Teams must be properly prepared to present their solutions on October 4th, 2014 at the 2014 Student Bragging Rights Competition. Students are responsible for their entire submission set-up and tear down. Please contact IDSA-STL well in advance regarding special consideration involved with your setup. COPYRIGHT & RIGHT OF USE Participants are responsible regarding any concerns pertaining to legal protection and intellectual property. Rights to the designs must not have been transferred to a third party at the time that they are entered for the competition. The copyright and right of use belong to the participant. The legal regulations governing intellectual property rights shall apply. By sending the entry form, participants declare their acceptance of the entry conditions and that they own the copyright for the project submitted. They also consent to the publication of material associated with the project submitted and with the persons involved. ORIGINALITY OF DESIGNS The participants confirm that the designs submitted originate from the participants themselves. Plagiarism in any form will result in immediate disqualification. 6
