1 Community Service 1 Part A Executive Summary On 12 th of January 2010, one of the worst-ever natural disasters struck the western hemisphere, leaving the Haitian capital in ruins. Rotaract Club of HELP University College wanted to be part of the effort to raise fund for the Haiti. Hence, we volunteered to help out with the charity concert organized by the Student Council of Department of Psychology of HELP University College. We set up a booth to sell muachi and Indian candies before the concert on the 5 th of February On the 9 th to 11 th of February 2010, we organized another fund raising project for the Haitians. A booth was set up to sell packet drinks and car stickers. A gross profit of RM1651 was raised. Part B Objectives 1. To raise fund for Haiti. 2. 7 Community Service 7 Part E The Making of As mentioned in the executive summary above, on the 12 th of January 2010 Haiti was struck by one of the worst ever natural disasters. Following on that, during the Board of Directors meeting, PE Jocelyn Xie Hui and Community Service Director, Yang Ha Lim proposed to raise fund for the Haitians. The proposal was approved by the Board on the spot. At first, the idea was to organize a charity concert. However, President Chew Mei Hwei found that the Student Council of the Department of Psychology will be conducting one as well. Hence, instead of having another charity concert on the same month, she proposed to help them out with the food. The proposal was approved and in order to bring the project a step further, PE Jocelyn Xie once again proposed to have a 3-day fund raising event from 10am to 2pm from 9 th 11 th of February Again, the proposal was approved and the project committee was formed. Initially, the idea was to sell tuna roll, root beer with vanilla spray, snacks, car stickers, sushi, packet drinks and canned drinks. We consulted President Janice Lim of Rotary Club of Bandar Utama and without any hesitation; her Board agreed to sponsor RM500 for the project, Moreover, President Janice managed to get President Tiffany of Rotary Club of Titiwangsa to get sponsorship from YEO s company for the packet drinks. We also consulted our staff advisor, Mr. Loh Kong Ken regarding the project. He told us that the CEO of HELP University College is willing to double the amount that we will raise for the Haitians. The Rotaractors involved met up to divide the tasks among themselves during the planning stage. The banner was handmade by them in order to save the cost and also to show their sincerity in helping out the Haitians. Even the posters for the booth were handmade by the Rotaractors. This shows their commitments to this project. Everything went well for the food selling before the charity concert. All the muachi was being sold off. As for the 3-day fund raising event, everything went well until two days before the actual event. It was when we found out that, the car stickers could not be produced on time. However, we managed to get the car stickers on the day itself. Besides that, it was hard to get Rotaractors to help us out during the period of time as most of us have classes. Many ended up skipping their classes for the event. Post mortem was conducted after the event. Positive feedbacks and constructive feedbacks were gathered from the Rotaractors involved. Even though, it was hard for most of the Rotaractors involved to help out during the 3 day-event as they have classes to attend and assignments to rush, they did not hesitate to help out. They even skipped their meals. No doubt that we are not promoting any class skipping behaviors but the fact that they are

8 Community Service 8 willing to be there to help out despite classes and assignments, it became something worth to take note of. With that, it will be safe to say that the event was a huge success. The teamwork was there. The spirit was there. We managed to raise RM3302 for the Haitians. Last but not least, this is line with the motto. Service Above Self as most of Rotaractors put the needs of others before themselves and they gave their services to the community despite their classes, meal time and assignments. Part F Tell us why This project deserves the award and be selected as the most outstanding in its category despite being a small project because it has fulfilled most of the purpose and goals under Article II of Standard Rotaract Club Constitution. Through this project, the committee members experienced carrying out a project in the university. All of them, except for the project advisor have not had such experience. Hence, it was learning experience for all of them. This project also helped them to develop professional and leadership skills as they are required to have meetings in order to share and discuss about new ideas. Besides, most of them learnt to write a proposal and report through this project. They learnt to deal with the sponsors and the staff at Department of Students Affairs in order to book the venue and some paper work required to run a project. It might seem nothing to the most of us but for first timers, it proved to be a challenge. They also learnt the importance to respect the rights of others. No naked pictures of the Haitians especially the children, are being used even though, the pictures were being published by reliable resources. This is to show respect to them. This project is also an example that opportunity has been given to the young people to address the needs and concerns of the community and in this case, the Haitians s. Besides, this project did provide us the opportunity to work along with our sponsoring club, Rotary Club of Bandar Utama and Rotary Club of Titiwangsa. Besides, raising fund, we are also creating awareness of the existence of Rotaract Clubs and Rotary Clubs. All the posters mentioned about the both clubs. By having Rotaract logo on the car stickers, it indirectly promotes and create awareness of Rotaract Club to the general public as the cars with the sticker on it will move from place to place. This project also managed to demonstrate and practice the Rotaract motto, Fellowship through Service. As you can see form the photos, the Rotaractors did not cease to have fun getting to know each other and to take photos together during the event without forgetting the purpose of them being there. Moreover, they always gathered during their lunch hour for the meetings of this project.

9 Community Service 9 This project is also in line with the Rotary theme for this term which is Rotary Shares. We shared our time, resources, talents and money to help the Haitians. We might not be able to help much but we tried our best to share what we have with each other in order to bring out the very best for the Haitians. Examples, resources from the Rotary Clubs, planning and man power from the Rotaractors. Moreover, the Indian candies and Muachi are prepared by the Rotaractors family. The Department of Student Affairs of HELP did not cease to provide us all the support that they can, including getting us the icebox, tables and chairs. The spirit of sharing can be clearly seen through this project not just between the Rotaractors and Rotarians but of general public as well. This project might achieve the Rotary focus on two particular areas which are hunger and health. With the donation money which was sent to them through HELP University College and World Vision, it was within our hope that, the money might help them to curb hunger among, at least some of the Haitians affected by the natural disaster. In a way, this will also promotes their physical health as when they get food, they will get nutrients. Perhaps, with the amount of money, they are able to get medicine for the injured Haitians especially the children. Last but not least, the project itself is meaningful but the process of doing this project was even more meaningful. It was fun, exciting and challenging.
