1 Community Newsletter Week of January 29 - February 2, 2018 A publication of the City of Dodge City Public Information Office 1. The Sports Commission submitted a proposal in December to host the 2019 NAIA Softball National Championship, and were one of four sites selected for interviews on February 1. Based on these interviews two sites will be selected for site visits. 2. Every year in the United States firefighters and civilians are killed when emergency vehicles are involved in crashes while responding to or returning from emergencies. The Dodge City Fire Department, with the implementation of Standard Operating Guidelines and training in emergency response and apparatus operations, works diligently for the safety of the public and our fire personnel. January 19, 20, and 21st DCFD personnel had the opportunity to work on their skills in the Kansas University Fire and Rescue Institutes Driver Simulator Course held at the Dodge City Fire Departments Training Facility. This training utilizes simulators to reinforce good driving skills and mediate the correct response to a driving situation. Situations are repeatable until the desired skill is learned without endangering students or damaging equipment. The simulator contains all the functions and controls needed for conducting driver training. This is just one aspect of the training DCFD personnel perform to ensure the safe operation of emergency equipment. 3. The CREW Recycling Advisory Board participated in S.T.E.M night at the High school Thursday night from 6 to 8 pm. Staff and recycling board members taught kids of all ages about the processes that the recycled products go through to make new products that can be used for many different things. The kids were amazed that milk jugs could be turned into compressed lumber to make items such as the park benches located in front of the band shell at Wright Park. Several hundred kids participated in the event and now have a better understanding of how recycling can help their community. The waste water treatment plant attended as well and demonstrated how water is treated and distributed in the system.

2 4. Staff from City Administration attended the Kansas Association of City/County Management (KACM) Winter Conference in Wichita this week. The focus of the conference was creating an innovative organization and the event was hosted by the Wichita State University Division of Diversity and Community Engagement, Public Policy and Management Center. Prior to the conference, City Manager Cherise Tieben attended the quarterly board meeting for KACM. 5. Boutique Air held their Ribbon Cutting at Dodge City Regional Airport on Monday. The event was well attend by the public and City staff. Mayor Kent Smoll spoke on the importance of Essential Air Service to our community before introducing Boutique Air COO Brian Murphy. Those in attendance were able to look inside the plane and could enter a drawing two win two round- trip tickets to Denver. The winners of the drawing were Roxanna Murillo and Mollea Wainscott (not pictured).

3 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 30, 2018 Contact: Mollea Wainscott Phone: FORD COUNTY TO HOST STUDENT ENTREPRENEURSHIP COMPETITION THIS FEBRUARY Dodge City KS Dodge City /Ford County Development Corporation E-Community, in association with the Network Kansas E-Community Partnership, announces the Ford County Youth Entrepreneurship Competition will take place in Dodge City in February, as part of the Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge (YEC) series. The competition will be held on Thursday, February 22 nd at the Dodge City Community College Little Theater. The goal of the competition is to expose Kansas middle school and high school students to entrepreneurship. This is an exciting and fun experience for students. Allowing students the opportunity to show off their business ideas in front of judges and their peers while competing for a cash prize, says Mollea Wainscott with the Dodge City/Ford County Development Corporation. The winners of the local 2017 competition competed and placed at State with their drone areal photography business. They were hired by the Dodge City Chamber of Commerce to photograph Dodge City Days. Dodge City/Ford County Development Corporation is one of many community organizations across Kansas to host a locally organized event designed to give students a hands-on entrepreneurship experience. The competition will consist of students preparing a executive summary, and a formal presentation. The students will be competing against each other for $3,500 in prize money. The students work will be judged by local entrepreneurs, public sector partners, teachers, or other adults. This is the second year the Development Corporation has brought this competition to their County. Students tell us every year how local entrepreneurship competitions open their eyes to new career possibilities, reward innovation and creative problem solving, and give them valuable experience presenting ideas to a panel of judges. It s a wonderful gift that the community can give their youth, says Anne Dewvall, Manager of the E-Community Partnership. During , 454 students from more than twenty communities hosted 21 local entrepreneurship competitions as part of the YEC series. The academic year marks the fifth annual YEC series coordinated by NetWork Kansas and the E-Community Partnership. The annual YEC series culminates in a statewide championship, where the top students from each local competition face off against each other for prize money and other honors. The 2018 statewide championship will be held on April 24 th, 2018 at Kansas State University. For more information contact Mollea Wainscott with the Dodge City/Ford County Development Corporation, at or housing@dodgedev.org.
