1 Fall Clubs LES Fall Clubs 2014 Here are the Laytonsville Elementary School s Fall Club offerings for the school year. Our clubs offer many opportunities to explore new ideas and gain new knowledge and skills. Participation in our clubs will also provide students with the opportunity to better understand themselves, their unique talents, and the talents of others. Our Fall Session will run for 7 weeks beginning the week of October 6th. Some clubs will be offered before school from 8:10 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. or after school from 3:40 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Morning club students will go directly to their classrooms after their club activity and afternoon club sponsors will walk students to the gym at 4:30 for parent pick-up. Please make sure that your child knows who will be picking him/her up in the afternoon. Snacks will not be served. Once again we are using SignUp Genius via the Internet to register for clubs. This will save much paper and is an easy way to register. Once you have registered, you will receive an acceptance notification letter identifying the club that your student is registered for and the dates of that club. If you are unable to access SignUp Genius, please contact Ms. Mohr at Please remember, many of the clubs have a space limit. If the club your child wishes to participate in is full, then he/she will not be able to participate in that club. Also, because our clubs are so popular, your child may only sign up for one club per semester. Club Offerings Photography Club Explore the world of digital photography. Learn the digital camera's features and abilities, understand timing in photography, and much more. Club Size: 15 Grades: 4-5 Location: Computer Lab Sponsor: Mr. Coleman (Parent Sponsor)

2 Day: Monday Time: 3:40 p.m. 4:30 p.m. Materials Needed: Digital Camera (no cell phone cameras) (Digital cameras are available from the school if you do not have a digital camera at home for your child to use.) LES Junk Yard Engineers Club - 5th Grade Only Ever wonder how your toaster works? What s inside your telephone? How does your popcorn maker make popcorn? Take apart small appliances and learn the basics of electronics with a retired scientist. Club Size: 10 Grades: 5 Location: TBD Sponsor: Mr. Carl Nelson (Community Sponsor) Day: Tuesday Time: 12:55 p.m. - 1:25 p.m. (5th grade recess) Materials Needed: Goggles & a small broken or unused appliance LES Junk Yard Engineers Club for 4th & 5 th Graders Ever wonder how your toaster works? 3 LEGO Club for Grades 3-5 Come play with one of America's favorite toys...legos! Join our Bulldog LEGO Club and get those creative minds and fingers moving with other Bulldog friends! This club is a fun way for kids to share their love for Lego building. The experience is not only educational, but builds social skills as well. Club Size: 25 Grades: 3-5 Location: Media Center Sponsor: Mr. Jaramillo (Parent Sponsor) Day: Tuesday Time: 3:40 p.m. 4:30 p.m. LES Building Club Using Legos and big blocks, build houses, bridges, tall buildings and boats. Each week a project will be created and students will judge the project on set criteria. Club Size: 15 Grades: 3-5 Location: TBD Sponsor: Mr. Bohrer (Parent Sponsor) Day: Tuesday Time: 8:10 a.m. 9:00 a.m. Fun Run Track Club Are you ready to run for fun? If so, then sign up to join the Fun Run Track Club. Be ready to meet some new friends, learn healthy hints to keep your body strong, and enjoy a bit of exercise as we prepare for a variety of different run distances and relays. We will run (rain or shine). Come ready to discover a healthier body and mind! Club Size: 30 Grades: 1-5

4 Location: Gym/Outside Sponsors: Mrs. Neukam (Parent Sponsor) Day: Thursday Time: 3:40 p.m. 4:30 p.m. Materials Needed: Clothing and shoes appropriate for running outdoors Latino Dancing Club Rumba, Mambo, Cha-Cha-Cha! Come have fun with your friends as you learn some Latino Dance steps! These dances are various forms of ballroom and folk dance that originated in Latin America. Club Size: 20 Grades: 1-5 Location: TBD Sponsor: Mrs. Stephens (Parent Sponsor) Day: Wednesday Time: 3:40 p.m. 4:30 p.m. Green Team The Green Team will partner with Terra Cycle to collect & recycle used glue sticks from our classrooms. Students will meet once a week to collect used glue sticks, empty, sort and pack them for shipment. We will learn why it is important to reduce our waste and provide a service to the classrooms. We will make posters and write announcements for the school to promote the 3 R s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. 5 Science Inquiry Club The Science Inquiry Club offers students the opportunity to conduct and design exciting science experiments with like-minded scientists. We focus on answering the "why?" to build a deeper understanding of scientific concepts, and learn how to develop thorough scientific investigations. Club Size: 20 Grades: K - 5 Location: TBD Sponsor: Mrs. St. Denis (Parent Sponsor) Day: Friday Time: 8:15 a.m. 9:05 a.m. Materials Needed: Goggles needed for some experiments. Goggles can be purchased in retail stores like Walmart, Ollies, Home Depot, etc. There will be a few on-hand for those students who do not have goggles. Parents will be alerted the week before the goggles are needed for the club.
