1 The VIKING VOICE A newsletter for School District 233 families Homewood-Flossmoor Com munity Hig h Sc hool March/April 2017 hfhighschool.org instagram.com/hfhs59 twitter.com/hfhs59 Superintendent s Note Pursuing academic excellence for all students is the foundation on which H-F was built and thrives on today. It is our mission each year to give every student, at every level, the best opportunity to succeed inside and outside of the classroom. The talents and expertise of our faculty, staff, coaches and sponsors that are shared with our students result in amazing accomplishments and successes school-wide. In step with our mission to provide the very best for all of our students, we embraced the charge of beginning the search process for a new principal. With the combined efforts and commitment of staff, students, parents and the H-F community, I am confident that the process will produce an excellent candidate who will be an outstanding leader at our school next year. Thank you very much to those who participated in interviews, attended meetings or completed surveys to help create the principal candidate profile. Moving forward, H-F will continue to promote its academic excellence, the talents of our students and staff, and the unwavering Viking pride that does not diminish over time. Dr. Von Mansfield, Superintendent

2 15th Annual Career Fair: Monday, March 13 Hundreds of vocations will be on display at the 15th Annual Career Fair, which will be held in the North Building Fieldhouse on Monday, March 13. Students will get to walk through the Fieldhouse during their PE, Health or Driver Education class to have the opportunity to speak to professionals from a variety of careers, including doctors, reporters, lawyers, engineers, architects, social workers, dentists, bankers, photographers and government officials. Students are expected to speak with at least three exhibitors to get their questions asked about future careers. The day is rewarding for exhibitors as well, as they provide inspiration to students and promote their vocations to the next generation. Exhibitors are treated to breakfast and lunch and they receive a special thank you gift from the HFPA. For more details about the event or if you are interested in being an exhibitor this year please contact Paula Lueder at or THE VIKING VOICE 1

4 Spring All-School Testing Day: Wednesday, April 5 Spring All-School Testing Day has been scheduled for Wednesday, April 5. The school day will dismiss at 1:20 p.m. SENIORS Grade 12 students do not test or attend school on this day. This is a good opportunity for them to prepare for next year s transition to college or other post-secondary plans. Students may also spend the day working on scholarship applications (view some options at hffoundation.org) or visiting nearby colleges and universities. FRESHMEN, SOPHOMORES & JUNIORS Freshmen will take the PSAT 8/9, sophomores the PSAT 10, and juniors the SAT. These exams consist of tests in Reading, Math and Writing & Language. The math test has two sections: one that permits a calculator and one that does not. The SAT taken by juniors is an official exam, and the scores are accepted by colleges and universities for admission and scholarships. Students are reminded to get a good night s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast and to bring their student ID, several No. 2 pencils and a calculator. It is important that every student perform his/her best to provide the most accurate picture of their academic achievement and growth, which helps H-F better customize their educational experience. Many resources are available for students both before and after the exams. In the coming weeks, parents will receive a letter containing their student s College Board access code from fall testing. This code can also be found on the score reports recently mailed home. The code is used to establish an account with the College Board, which allows students to view test reports, register for retests, access information about college applications, and more. Additionally, these accounts can be linked to Khan Academy, which provides free customized test prep that adjusts as students learn. Instructions on how to establish a College Board and Khan Academy account will be included with the codes. In May, updated access codes will be sent, and your student will use these to link their April test scores with their College Board account. Juniors can also prepare for their exams by enrolling in H-F's Viking SAT Prep. These courses are designed to help students gain confidence in their test-taking abilities, and improve their SAT scores by helping them better anticipate the types of questions that will be on the test. Sessions begin Feb. 19 and will meet weekly on Sundays or Wednesdays until late March, just days before the SAT is administered. Registration forms can be found at the Campus Store in the South Cafeteria, and the cost is $150. For more information, visit hfhighschool.org or contact Mr. Easter at Summer Behind the Wheel Registration begins in March Homewood-Flossmoor annually offers a summer program that teaches the rules of the road to students of School District 233.
