1 SUPERINTENDENTS COUNCIL October 7, 2009 Kansas Coordinated School Health Grant Deadline: October 9 This grant program offers districts and schools the opportunity to apply for funds that can be used to develop or continue coordinated school health programs addressing physical activity, nutrition, tobacco prevention, staff wellness, and other school-level health initiatives. Kansas Math/Science Partnership (MSP) Grant Deadline: October 7, 2009 to register for the workshop; December 4, 2009 for the application The Kansas Math/Science Partnership (MSP) Grant Application for is now available. The Kansas State Department of Education will be awarding approximately 4 new Kansas Math/Science Partnership Grants. The awards are for three years and will range from a minimum of $50,000 to a maximum of $150,000 per fiscal year. Year 2 and 3 grants are contingent upon Congressional funding and fulfilling grant requirements. Title II, Part B, of NCLB authorizes a Mathematics and Science Partnerships (MSP) program. MSP is intended to increase academic achievement of students in mathematics and science by enhancing the content knowledge and teaching skills of classroom teachers. Kansas will focus on K-8 mathematics. The core of these partnerships must be among: o high-need unified school districts (USD); and o teacher education programs; and o science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) faculty in institutions of higher education (IHE). If your school district or university plans to submit a grant application for the MSP program and you will be involved in writing or administrating the grant, you will not want to miss this workshop. The workshop is intended to even the playing field, by giving everybody the specific knowledge they need to write a quality application. Even those who are experienced grant writers and have written MSP grants that have been funded will want to attend. If you are from a small school district, you can form a partnership with other districts and work with a Kansas university to submit an application.

2 What: THE WORKSHOP A workshop to learn the requirements of the MSP program and how to address the specific requirements of the application. This workshop will provide detailed examples of how to address the required components of the MSP Grants. Examples of how not to address the required components will also be provided. Participants will have the opportunity to score sample grants and to engage in an open dialogue related to possible ideas for projects. Reporting requirements will be discussed, so that evaluation plans can be written to address them. Who: Grant writers, grant administrators, and grant reviewers. 3 Youth Leaders for Literacy Grants Deadline: October 30, 2009 Source: Youth Service American (YSA) and the National Education Association (NEA)Web Site Youth Leaders for Literacy Grants ( Youth Leaders for Literacy is an initiative of the National Education Association (NEA) and Youth Service America (YSA) to help youth direct their enthusiasm and creativity into reading-related service projects. Awards of up to $500 will be made. Grant applications should propose youth leadership in developing and implementing a literacy project that begins March 2, 2010 and culminates on YSA's Global Youth Service Days, April 23-25, Teacher Grant Program Deadline: October 30, 2009 Source: American Immigration Law Foundation (AILF)Web Site Teacher Grant Program ( The American Immigration Law Foundation (AILF) will award $100 to $500 grants to a limited number of K-12 grade projects that provide education about immigrants and immigration. The AILF seeks to fund activities that are supportive of AILF s mission of promoting the benefits of immigrants to the United States. Applications are limited to educators teaching in public or private K-12 schools. Proposals that are classroom-based will receive strong consideration, and the AILF encourages projects that can be replicated in other classrooms across the nation. Verizon Foundation Literacy Grants Deadline: October 31, 2009 Web Site Verizon Foundation Funding Goals and Partnership Guidelines ( The Verizon Foundation helps K-12 schools to increase their literacy and educational achievement levels. Proposals will be considered from public and private elementary and secondary schools that are registered with the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). Note: the Foundation will not sponsor field trips of any kind. Average awards are between $5,000 and $10,000. Patriot's Pen Essay Contest Deadline: November 1, 2009 Source: Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United StatesWeb Site Patriot's Pen ( Patriot's Pen, a youth-essay writing contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, is a nationwide competition that gives students in grades 6-8 the opportunity to write essays expressing their views on democracy. The first-place winner will receive a $10,000 savings bond and

4 an all-expense-paid trip to Washington D.C. The top national winners will each receive a savings bond between $1,000 to $10,000. Field Trip Grants Deadline: November 3, 2009 Source: Target FoundationWeb Site Apply Now for Field Trip Grants ( Target is offering $800 for K-12 teachers to take their classrooms outdoors. Field trips may include art museums, environmental projects, cultural events, and much more. Grants do not cover any equipment such as computers, software, or audio/visual hardware. Grants will be given to 5,000 schools during the academic school year. Love Your Veggies Grant Program Deadline: November 6, 2009 Source: Hidden Valley and the School Nutrition Foundation (SNF)Web Site School Grant Program ( Hidden Valley is sponsoring the Love Your Veggies Grant Program, an initiative that will award $10,000 grants to 51 elementary schools nationwide to support programs that increase student access to fresh vegetables and fruits during school meals. Each grant award will support an elementary school in developing a program offering fresh vegetables and fruits lasting through the school year. Play with Your Produce Healthy Challenge Deadline: November 13, 2009 Web Site Play with Your Produce Healthy Challenge ( Produce for Kids (PFK) invites K-12 classrooms to enter the PFK Play with Your Produce Healthy Challenge contest for Fall Projects must focus on getting kids to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables, feature at least three of PFK sponsor products, and involve the entire classroom. All entering classrooms will receive coupons and discounts for fresh produce, sample lesson plans with fun fruit & veggie activities, discounts on nutrition books and curricula, and Produce for Kids goodies for the classroom. Three grand prize winners will receive a classroom party toolkit (with party ideas, recipes, favors and $100 gift certificate to purchase produce and other nutritious food from a local grocery store), a $500 mini-grant to promote school-based health and wellness, and their photo and write-up highlighted on the Produce for Kids website.

5 Leavey Awards Deadline: November 30, 2009 Source: Freedoms Foundation of Valley Forge Web Site The Leavey Awards ( The Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Foundation is giving $7,500 to full time educators who have an innovative way of teaching America s private enterprise system. A special award of $15,000 may also be given for an unusually meritorious entry. Candidates must be U.S. citizens employed full-time as educators at an accredited American school (grades K-12), college, or university. Letters About Literature Deadline: December 12, 2009 Web Site Letters About Literature ( Sponsored by Letters About Literature (LAL), the Center for the Book, and Target Brands, Inc., students in grades 4-9 are invited to write a letter that explores their emotions inspired by a book, short story, poem, essay, or speech. Judges for each participating state Center for the Book will select the top letter in each level. State winners will receive a $50 Target giftcard and advance to the national level judging for a chance to win a $500 Target giftcard, plus a $10,000 LAL Reading Promotion grant for their community or school library. Additionally, the national honorable mention winners will each receive a $100 Target giftcard and a $1,000 LAL Reading Promotion grant. This contest starts September 1, Jenny's Heroes Deadline: Ongoing Web Site Jenny's Heroes ( The Jenny Jones Foundation is looking for more "heroes." Anyone who wants to help their community can send the Foundation their ideas and a request for financial assistance (up to $25,000). The Foundation will only consider applications from everyday citizens with a personal desire to improve their communities.
