1 Arts Award Funding Guidance 3 possible funders for the Arts Award The following list is not exhaustive but is a selection of trusts and foundations whose funding priorities include young people or the arts or both. It is designed to point you in the direction of finding out more, so make the websites (where they exist) your first port of call and find out as much as you can before taking the plunge. Good Luck! The organisational grants programme is available both to specialist arts organisations and to those that use the arts as part of their work. It aims to change people s lives through the opportunity to take part in or experience high quality arts activities; increase opportunities for cultural diversity in the arts; support excellence, new ideas and activity to help build long-term stability in arts organisations; invest in the creative talent of artists and individuals; and increase resources for the arts. Activities eligible for grants include projects and events, participatory arts activities, educational activities, capital items, and professional development and training. normally range from 200 up to 100,000, and can cover activities lasting up to three years. Most grants will be under 30,000. Applications for grants under 5,000 will be handled in under six weeks. Lottery funding programme aimed at local groups, which awards grants of up to 10,000 in a simple, quick and straightforward way. Awards for All supports a wide range of activities in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, including education, heritage, environment, health, community activities, and in most countries, sports and arts. Funded by the Big Lottery Fund, the programme awards grants of between 250-5,000 to help individuals and small groups of people get projects off the ground in their local areas. Big Lottery Fund (including the Young People's Fund) Tel enquiries@biglotteryfund.org.uk Launched in June 2004, the Big Lottery Fund was formed as a result of a merger between the New Opportunities Fund, which made grants for health, education and the environment, and the Community Fund, the main source of lottery money to the voluntary sector. It has also taken over assets of the Millennium Commission and its role in supporting large-scale regeneration projects. Between 60% and 70% of its 1 billion of new funding a year is distributed to the voluntary sector. This is expected to be the case until The Young People's Fund aims to promote the well-being and personal development of young people across the UK. Young people can access the funding scheme either individually or through their organisations and groups. The fund totals 200 million, with million being allocated to England. There are 3 types of grant: grants to individual young people aged between 11 and 25 of between 250 and 5,000; grants to community and voluntary organisations working with young people aged between 11 and 18 of between 5,000 and 150,000; and grants to voluntary organisations to fund national projects. HALC has two rounds of funding every year. Carlton TV Trust Carlton Television Trust, 101 St Martin's Lane, London WC2N 4RF. Tel ctvtrust@carltontv.co.uk Carlton gives 500,000 p.a. to the Carlton Television Trust, its charity for the London region. The Trust supports educational projects that benefit children and young people who have special needs, or who are disadvantaged in other ways. Since 1993, the Trust has awarded over 3.5 million in 895 grants to 575 charities and voluntary organisations. They fund a wide range of educational schemes such as supplementary schools, music and drama workshops, English language tuition, basic literacy skills, and vocational training. These benefit children and young people from many sections of the community, including those who have physical or learning disabilities, refugees, homeless and unemployed young people, and children living in socially and economically deprived areas. British Gas and Save the Children will be funding small 7

Money is also available to fund projects that will help local organisations to listen to young people and give them a bigger say in their work. It will support projects that:. address a real need,. involve children and young people facing up to challenges in their community, have a positive impact upon a community, aim to bring about a real (and/or sustainable) change, offer relatively big impacts (scale and/or duration) for the money. It covers both capital projects and running costs (up to 3 years). Guidelines available. Hi8us First Light Ltd Progress Works, Heath Mill Lane, BIRMINGHAM B9 4AL Tel First Light offers range of grants to promote film-making by young people aged 5-18, particularly where they take a lead role in all aspects of the production process. First Light Pilot Awards are open to any constituted youth focused organisation to support young people in making a film between 1 and 5 minutes long. Studio awards are available to organisations with track record of filmmaking with young people and proven outreach ability or strong partners with all relevant skills, for between 3 and 6 films of 5 to 10 minutes long. 9 Priorities include arts, breaking the cycle (including projects working with vulnerable young people), developing communities, free and quiet minds, heritage, and offenders and society. Within these it prefers to support community initiatives to meet local needs, and concentrates on smaller charities, many of whom have only a local or regional remit. It looks for user involvement as well as the proper use and support of volunteers, and is keen to support Black voluntary sector projects. Minimum grant is 5,000, for capital or revenue needs. Revenue support is for a maximum of 5 years, although 3 year support is more common. It has three programmes: The Community Programme (the largest); the Collaborative Programme - generating new working methods in the voluntary sector through the promotion of an exchange of ideas, knowledge and good practice; and New Initiatives. Within these programmes the Trustees prefer to support 'underfunded' charities, especially those working with disadvantaged or disabled people. It focuses on three kinds of activity: family support - aiming to give people parenting skills and building caring and quality relationships; challenging disadvantage and discrimination; and helping to make the voluntary sector more effective. Practical guidance will be given on how to plan, run and manage a project. The Community Group Award distributes grants of up to 10,000 for youth led projects in the South West of England. Priority areas for include two open programmes: Make It Sound, to encourage music-making in the lives of children and young people aged 5-18, especially those who would otherwise lack the chance to take part, and Vocalise! to encourage opportunities for children and young people to sing. Funding is available to not-for-profit organisations (over one year old) over a period of six to 24 months. of between 5,000 and 30,000 are given to organisations providing activities that involve training and development and structured music-making activities which are planned to advance children and young people's music skills.
