1 GRANTS TO INDIVIDUALS June 2017 Some trusts consider making donations to individuals. Below is a list of some of the trusts who, at this moment, will consider funding individuals. As funding priorities change on a regular basis, it is probably a good idea to contact a trust BEFORE you spend time writing an application to make sure that they still fund individuals at the time of your application. Some points to consider when making your application: Make sure that you are eligible to apply to a particular trust. For example, if a trust only considers funding individuals or groups who live in the Liverpool area and you live in Essex, there is no point in applying to them. You ll end up wasting both your time and their time. Your letter should be clear and easy to read. Ideally, type your letter. Make sure that your contacts details are clearly set out on the letter you don t want to miss out on getting a grant because you forgot to include your address and phone number! Your letter of application should include the following information: how much you are requesting, why you need the funding and a list of all the ways that the donation will benefit you/your family. Funders usually prefer to donate to specific projects/activities, rather than general requests for money. For example, you are probably much more likely to be successful if your application is for an activity, such as, the cost of attending the Narcolepsy UK s annual conference, as opposed to a general request for 800. You will need to explain why that activity is so important to you. Break down your request into costed items. For example, an application for support with conference costs might look like this: 80 for return travel, 45 conference ticket, 72 bed and breakfast for two nights and 30 other meals over the weekend, TOTAL

2 Offer to provide other information or references on request. For example, your doctor may be willing to write and confirm that the conference would be very beneficial for you. Don t give up if your first application is unsuccessful. s are inundated with appeals for donations, so get disheartened. They refuse far, far, far more applications than they ever agree to fund. Just try another trust. And then try another one if the second application fails too. Give yourself LOTS of time. To go back to our earlier example, if you are applying for a donation to help you get to the annual Narcolepsy conference, do not wait until the month before the conference to make your application. s only meet a few times a year so you need to plan six months ahead, at least.
