E a s t L a n s i n g Information Three Michigan organizations, the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and the Urban Land Institute (ULI), have partnered to create an informative conference, which will focus on how infrastructure can drive economic development through emerging or expanding markets, creative leadership, new technologies and unique solutions developed by practitioners, facility/infrastructure developers, and owners. These groups represent Michigan engineers, developers and other professionals who have a focus and passion to create thriving Michigan communities. The Michigan Infrastructure Conference offers attendees ample opportunity to obtain continuing education credits while gaining knowledge and networking with peers. It will also offer exposure to new products and services from various exhibitors. Anyone in government, business, industry, or education with duties related to economic development and infrastructure planning, design and construction is encouraged to attend. 2 Brian Calley Lt. Governor State of Michigan Keynote Speaker On New Year s Day 2011, Brian Calley was sworn in as America s youngest lieutenant governor. In partnership with Governor Snyder, he pledged to chart a new course to Michigan s future. From the beginning, Brian viewed the role of lieutenant governor to be much more than a dusty old ceremonial position. He is working to transform a broken political culture into one that produces real solutions to Michigan s greatest challenges. As lieutenant governor, Brian guided a historic tax overhaul through the Legislature, breaking the pervasive gridlock that for too long blocked needed reforms. Throughout Michigan and across America, Lieutenant Governor Calley has been recognized as a bold leader for a new generation. His willingness to stand up for real people, from small business owners to families dealing with autism, has made Michigan stronger. Before he accepted the responsibility of building a stronger state, Brian was building a stronger local community. He spent a decade in the private sector working as a community banker. In that role, he helped hundreds of entrepreneurs in dozens of industries grow or maintain Michigan-based jobs and operations. He and his wife Julie have been married since 1996 and live in Portland with their three children. Infrastructure FireSIde Chat The Governor s Special Advisor for Public Private Partnerships, Joe Pavona, will lead a lively discussion with a group of prominent private developers from various regions of the state. In a fireside chat format, the experienced group of professionals will discuss how they believe Michigan s infrastructure can and will affect Michigan s economy in the coming years. Golf Outing Information A golf outing has been scheduled for Friday, May 9 at 10:30 a.m. at the Forest Akers West Golf Course on the campus of Michigan State University. The cost is $80 per person and all conference attendees and exhibitors are encouraged to participate. It is the perfect networking opportunity and a chance to have a little fun at the same time! This will be an 18 hole, 4 person scramble - so you don t have to be a great golfer! Hole sponsorships are available, and proceeds benefit the engineering organizations scholarship funds. 3 Breakout Sessions Thinking Outside the Development Toolbox Gain a unique perspective for those who play a role in community development. A new lens is provided for evaluating future infrastructure and public policy decisions. We will discuss ROI relative to project outlay, maintenance, and revenue. Real regional case studies will be presented in a high-energy, visual format. Grand Rapid s Silver Line MI s First Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System Grand Rapid s BRT will link populations to area jobs, medical facilities, universities, and other activities within the service area with 33 BRT stations running along a 9.6 mile route through downtown and south to 60th Street. This will be the first in Michigan and has a July 2014 operational date. Public Private Partnerships The P3 concept can capture: (1) economic savings from single responsibility of building and operating a project; (2) the private sectors ability to use depreciation, and tax credits; (3) the use of expertise, efficiencies, economies of scale and experience; (4) energy savings when rehabilitating old systems to capitalize a loan; (5) the ability to act in a rapid manner for early completion of a project. Innovative Design/Policy to Address Complete Streets and Green Infrastructure We depend on cars to travel from one neighborhood to another because we have no safe connection on which to walk/bike. Cities flood and we send polluted water into our streams and lakes. How are these things connected? This breakout will bring these issues together to provide solutions to difficult urban problems. Funding For Infrastructure Projects The majority of funding for municipal infrastructure is derived from federal and state funding sources. Who is eligible? How do you get the money? In this presentation, a number of funding and specialty sources will be discussed for a variety of projects. Non-traditional funding methods, such as brownfield tax increment financing, will also be discussed. Continental Rail Gateway A strategically located port authority and two private-sector organizations are collaborating to strengthen regional economic activity and expand the Michigan- Ontario border region s value as a logistics hub for international trade. This group s current project: a high-clearance replacement rail tunnel under the Detroit River that will add freight capacity at a critical crossing between the world s two largest trade partners. Continuing Education for Licensed Professional Engineers New continuing education requirements became effective October 2013 for licensed professional engineers. Continuing education credit will be offered to those attending the educational sessions at this event.
