2 fcpl s new look The new logo has clean lines and includes our name for easy identification. FCPL is on the cutting edge as a leading center of education, programs, and events contributing to the vibrancy of Frederick County. Darrell Batson, Director at Frederick County Public Libraries Bold New Look Coming soon to a library near you! Frederick County Public Libraries (FCPL) presents a brand new logo reflecting both the many digital and print resources offered to this community, as well as a safe, comfortable meeting environment to gather and share ideas. The new FCPL logo, which is being introduced in conjunction with a redesigned library website (fcpl.org), is bold, colorful, and indicative of how your local library is evolving to meet the needs of the community, from babies to seniors. A brand is indicative of who and what you are. It is time for us to present a new face to our community through this rebranding, as we continue to evolve and meet the diverse needs of our valued patrons, says Darrell Batson, director of Frederick County Public Libraries. The new logo has clean lines and includes our name for easy identification. FCPL is on the cutting edge as a leading center of education, programs, and events contributing to the vibrancy of Frederick. After meeting with several design agencies, FCPL selected the firm Tribe. They understood that "FCPL is driven by the passion to provide our community with a place to discover, grow, and share." From the start, FCPL s goals were clear. They wanted to define who they were as a brand and create an identity that would represent their characteristics and who they were to the public in a bold way. With brand attributes such as vibrancy, innovation, and community and a need for extreme flexibility of use we knew that only a strong, simple mark would work, but we also needed it to tell a story be unique something that was their own, stated Seth Sirbaugh, principal of Tribe. This new logo will soon appear on the Bookmobile truck wraps, library cards, "Bookmarks," and the many other informational and marketing pieces that inform the community of what s happening within the library. Check out the inspiration for the FCPL mark on the next page.

3 THE FCPL MARK Inspiration, Symbolism & Representation Our mark is the visual shorthand that represents the vision of our brand. FCPL is at the forefront of information sharing and knowledge creation, working everyday to stay on the cutting edge as a leading center for education, programs, and events that contribute to a more vibrant community. Our mark is the visual representation of this ideal. Icongraphy We see and use them everyday. These glyphs on our phones and computers constantly show us what, how much and where. Reading Material Books and magazines aren t going anywhere and still represent the bulk of information available at most libraries. Enclosure This represents our passion to provide the Frederick County community with a place to discover, grow, and share. Tilted Glyph The tilted glyph is unique from the others. This is an aspect of every library customer and their individual needs. Capital F The subtle use of the letter is a symbol for the diverse, rich and expansive county that our organization represents. From the start, FCPL s goals were clear. They wanted to define who they were as a brand and create an identity that would represent their characteristics and who they were to the public in a bold way. Seth Sirbaugh, Principal of Tribe Tribe Design & Branding 1

4 one maryland, one book "All American Boys, at the core, is a book about humanity. I couldn't be more honored, more humbled, that One Maryland One Book has chosen All American Boys as this year's selection. But more importantly, I couldn't be more hopeful." Jason Reynolds, Co-author "I believe books can change lives, but only when they are in the hands of powerful advocates... We hoped and dreamed the book could facilitate those kinds of community conversations." Brendan Kiely, Co-author Call number: Y FIC REYNOLDS Y CD BOOK FIC REYNOLDS ebook and eaudio also available Frederick County Public Libraries (FCPL) continues its partnership with Maryland Humanities to celebrate One Maryland One Book (OMOB), a statewide program designed to engage readers and instill a sense of community through the discussion of an award-winning book. This year s timely selection is All American Boys, written by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely. One Maryland One Book is a wonderful example of what the powerful combination of literacy and community can achieve. With this 2016 selection, we are looking forward to another season of connecting diverse audiences and communities with real-world issues, says David Payne, C. Burr Artz Public Library assistant branch manager and FCPL s program coordinator of OMOB. Over the past nine years, Marylanders have embraced this annual opportunity to come together through the reading of one book. The power of literature provides a lens through which we can explore our lives and our communities together. This year s selection offers the chance to discuss systemic issues that impact us all, commented Andrea Lewis of Maryland Center for the Book, Maryland Humanities. This 2016 Coretta Scott King Author Honor book, tells the story of two teens, one white and one African-American, forced to deal with the repercussions of a single violent act that leaves the community bitterly divided by racial tension. When 16-year-old Rashad goes to the corner store to buy chips, he is mistaken for a shoplifter by a police officer, who believes the teen s refusal to leave the store signifies his resisting arrest. The officer throws punches, even as the boy struggles to stay still. Between witnesses who watch this unfold and the video camera recording every move, this altercation leads to a division first within the local high school and then, by extension, the entire community. An engaging and relevant read, this title nonetheless focuses on a difficult topic and requires thoughtful discussion. All American Boys has received positive reviews from both high schoolers and adults. FCPL offers creative library programming through timely discussion groups and book clubs. The book is available for checkout in print, audio, and e-formats. Additionally, there are several programs being held at FCPL branches, including art lessons, writing workshops, book talks, and a panel discussion with Dr. Scott from Hood College. Please see the programming guide for more information. OMOB takes place in September and October, and All American Boys is marketed to high school age and older. 2 FCPL.ORG

12 point of rocks A Dynamic Decade Join us as we celebrate a remarkable little library on September 10, Mrs. Fry with community leaders at the Edward F. Fry Memorial opening in 2006 September 2016 marks 10 years since the Edward F. Fry Memorial Library at Point of Rocks opened its doors to the public. A little library with a modest collection and two library staff would eventually grow to house a collection of nearly 6,500 books and assume its place as a cornerstone in the community. The single room library now boasts an impressive event schedule full of preschool storytimes, STEM lab activities, and community partner programs that can at times see hundreds of community residents in attendance. We don t have a grocery store or a well-known coffee shop, but we have our library! We have a welcoming place for people of all ages to come and have access to the entire Frederick County Public Library collection, says Jeanne Bobofchak, local librarian. As we celebrate a little library that stands tall among its peers, it s important to note that it would not have been possible without the generosity of Edward and Gertrude Trudy Fry. Without Trudy Fry, our small community of Point of Rocks wouldn t have a library. Her generous heart and strong spirit continues to be the driving force behind the success of our library, says Jeanne. Edward Fry, now deceased, was an avid booklover and Point of Rocks native who dreamed of one day establishing a library in his hometown. When asked about the upcoming anniversary Mrs. Fry said, The library is growing, and I think Ed would have been very proud. His dream has been fulfilled. The Frys gift and continued support of a public library serves as a continuous reminder of the profound nature of love and the importance of community. Edward F. Fry Join us as we celebrate the 10th anniversary of a remarkable little library on September 10 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Edward F. Fry Memorial Library located at 1635 Ballenger Creek Pike, Point of Rocks, MD. There will be family-friendly activities and surprise guest appearances. If you would like to support the library and give $10 in honor of the 10th anniversary, or to learn more about joining the Friends of the Point of Rocks Library, visit fcpl.org/support. 10 FCPL.ORG

30 giving Library Love Stories Mr. David Martin American Sign Language Studies Program Manager, Frederick Community College Maryland School for the Deaf Board of Trustees President When I was a young boy, I loved the Berenstain Bears and the Curious George books. When I was five my family moved to Frederick so I could attend the Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD) and then later Gallaudet University. Through MSD, I was able to do volunteer work at the C. Burr Artz library when I was in high school. The library really became important to me when I became a father and I was able to bring my four kids to the library and expose them to the wonderful world of literature. Through my work at Frederick Community College, I always tell my students that I love to tear down communication barriers; I want to build bridges. I ve always felt that way. When I was growing up I would teach my family, friends, and neighbors American Sign Language (ASL). Even now, in my spare time I enjoy making ASL video blogs on YouTube and social media. Through my work with the library, I ve been able to continue building bridges. I ve hosted events that teach library patrons communication strategies, I signed a welcome video that plays in all the libraries, I ve translated library events so everyone can enjoy them, and I ve helped the library staff develop skills that help them better meet the needs of the deaf community here in Frederick County. Mrs. Barbara Pearl Basoonist, Frederick Symphony Orchestra Symphony Storytime Musician The first book I ever loved was Tubsey Turtle s Cookbook for young children. It inspired me to make Tubsey Turtle s Mix-a-Rue, or scrambled eggs, the first thing I ever cooked. With a love for reading, I realized as a junior in high school that I could read anything when I finally finished Gone with the Wind. Beyond reading for pleasure, I also enjoy the research aspect of the library. My interests are in genealogy, history, and music as I ve been a musician all my life. I was an elementary and middle school instrumental music teacher for Frederick County Public Schools for 41 years before retiring. I ve also played bassoon with the Frederick Symphony Orchestra (FSO) since its very beginning, nearly 20 seasons ago. For the last three years, I have volunteered at the library for Symphony Storytime, a partnership program hosted by the libraries, FSO, and Music & Arts. As a librarian reads fantastical stories to preschoolers, musicians from FSO play music to bring a story to life. After storytime, Music & Arts holds an instrument petting zoo giving kids an opportunity to explore instruments and try to make sounds. I love working with children and believe music is an excellent way to help children develop improved motor skills and logical thinking. Playing a musical instrument is a wonderful way to enrich a child s life. The earlier we start the better! 31 giving back A New Library for Walkersville From 1968 to 1987, Walkersville residents borrowed books from the local pharmacy where a small collection was kept. To their delight, in 1988 the first Walkersville library opened to the public with a collection of nearly 7,000 books and other materials. In a space of just 2,500 square feet, the collection has grown to over 20,000 items. Each day the library is bursting with activity as patrons fill the space for events, storytimes, and study groups. For many years, limited space has required the library staff to be creative in finding solutions to accommodate the crowd of library patrons looking to attend events and use limited resources. With groundbreaking taking place this fall, a new Walkersville library is scheduled to open by late 2017 or early Located on South Glade Road across from Creamery Park, the much needed, new 15,000-squarefoot facility will offer an expanded collection, plenty of parking, and a comfortable space to better meet the needs of the community. I can t wait for Walkersville to see it! They will be so proud of their new library, says Robin Bowers, Walkersville Branch Administrator. There will finally be room for the whole community to enjoy the library, and we will be able to offer a variety of new events that we haven t been able to in the past. We ll also be able to offer quiet spaces for people to study, something the community has been asking for a long time. In addition to a new one-stop service desk, the library will have all of the resources and technology we ve come to expect as a standard at FCPL: a large community meeting room, a STEM lab, computer stations, and of course wifi. The space will be personalized to reflect the community it serves, says Frederick County Public Libraries Director Darrell Batson. The children s area will be impressive. We know that children learn through interactive experiences so creating a space that allows parents and caregivers to interact with their children in ways that enhance their development and early literacy skills is something that is important. While the building, staff, and collection are funded by the county and the state, we rely on support from individual donors and the community to offer unique features that we wouldn t be able to otherwise. With additional funding, we hope to provide an interactive, early literacy learning area, a teen zone that will better equip our young adults to be successful, and increase general access to innovative technology, says Jess El-Zeftawy, FCPL development officer. If you would like to make a gift in support of the Walkersville library or learn more about the many ways to give back, visit fcpl.org/support. More updates on the new Walkersville Library will be included in future issues of Bookmarks. The graphic is provided by Morris & Ritchie Associates, Inc. So, I typically read each night until my eyelids get heavy and the book begins to fall out of my hands. I have two books on my nightstand currently. The first is Babylon s Ark by Lawrence Anthony. It is a nonfiction account about the rescue of the abandoned animals from the Baghdad zoo during the coalition invasion of I haven t gotten too far into this book yet, but I recently finished reading The Elephant Whisperer by the same author, in which he describes his experience caring for a herd of rogue elephants on his game reserve in South Africa. The book provided great insight into the social behaviors of wild elephants. It was a great read. I am also reading, Prophets and Moguls, Rangers and Rogues, Bison and Bears, by Heather Hansen. This easy-to-read account of the National Park Service is based upon research, interviews, and visits to numerous national parks by the author. She shares stories about the history of the NPS and some of the key individuals who have played a part in the agency s creation and growth. I ve used portions of the book to prepare a PowerPoint about the National Park Service in celebration of our centennial in Susan Burke National Park Service Park Ranger, Retired I bought the first Kindle reader sold. I travel as often as I can, and I load up my reader before I go on a trip. I enjoy many different types of books, mystery to historical fiction to biographies and of course books on travel. Several years ago, I found Grand Canyon by Donald Davis. Little did I know it would become one of my all-time favorite books. For light reading, I sometimes pick a book from the young adult section. I randomly selected Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer. I am surprised this book didn t go viral like Harry Potter. It is a wonderful fantasy about a 12-year-old genius, the son of a legendary Irish criminal. When I am finished reading for fun, I pick up October Mourning by James Rada Jr. It tells the horrific story of the 1912 Spanish flu. Most influenza outbreaks disproportionately kill juvenile, elderly, or already weakened patients; in contrast, the 1918 pandemic predominantly killed previously healthy young adults. This book follows young Sarah Jenkins on the last day of her life. Sarah H. Heald Curator and Planner, Harpers Ferry Center, National Park Service Think President James A. Garfield was one of the boring presidents? You are not alone, but it turns out he wasn t. Candice Millard s Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President is an absolute page-turner. Most of Destiny takes place in Washington D.C., where the president was shot and languished for months. Reading about the city down the road in the 1880s fascinated me. FCPL HOLIDAY SCHEDULE September 5 // Closed October 10 // Closed November 8 // Closed November 11 // Closed November 24 & 25 // Closed For all 2016 holiday closings, visit fcpl.org/branches-hours/ holidayclosings. For fiction, I recently read The Bastard of Istanbul, by Elif Shafik, a popular Turkish contemporary author. Set in Istanbul, Arizona, and California, it is a story of two very different families with very colorful characters and how they ultimately connect. I liked how it gave me a sense of life and culture in 21st-century Istanbul. Sarah Vowell s Lafayette in the Somewhat United States is next in line for me. Her Assassination Vacation is one of my favorite books (and it features many national parks), so I expect her same irreverent approach to light up Lafayette in early American history. The French hero visited Frederick on his return tour in Not sure if that makes it into her book, but with her quirky approach, I expect to be entertained.
