3 Frederick County Public Libraries Announces New Director In May, the Frederick County Public Libraries (FCPL) Board of Trustees selected James Kelly as the new director for Frederick County s library system. James served as interim director since January, following the retirement of Darrell Batson, FCPL s director of 20 years. Read on to learn more about James and his plans for FCPL. Q&A WITH FCPL S NEW DIRECTOR Q. Why are you the right person to lead FCPL? A. Before this opportunity, I served as FCPL s associate director for operations, so I m incredibly familiar with our library system and its day-to-day operations. I bring with me 27 years of experience working in public libraries, and I m confident the lessons I ve learned along the way will prove valuable to our library customers. Above all though, I am passionate about libraries and the value they bring to their community. Beyond offering an extensive collection, FCPL provides valuable programs and services to the public. We offer access to incredible online tools and resources and we welcome more than 200,000 people to our programs each year. As I settle into my new role as director, I want to focus on what we offer our customers and further strengthen our role in our communities. Q. What can the residents of Frederick expect from their library? A. Our library customers can expect a lot of their library! First, our libraries and our staff are committed to three core values: we are kind; we listen and connect; and we create. Everything we do is rooted in these values. Additionally, I view the library as a connection point a place where community members can connect to us, to our partners, and to each other; I hope members of the community share in this vision. I want residents to view their library as a hub of intellectual discovery and cultural exploration as well as an inclusive, attractive and safe space. Q. Do you have any significant changes planned for FCPL? A. I m fortunate to have taken on the director role at a great time for FCPL. Thanks in large part to Darrell Batson, FCPL s previous director, and to the dedicated staff across all of our branches, Frederick s libraries are thriving. My goal isn t to make significant changes; rather, I ll focus on areas where we can improve and strengthen our impact. During his nearly 20 years with FCPL, Darrell focused on building a system equipped to serve the people of Frederick. While I plan to continue building Frederick s library system to match the size and enthusiasm of our community, the staff and I will also focus on three key areas: Inspiring a culture of learning across our community, Strengthening community connections with diverse and expansive programs, services and activities, and Positioning the library as a center of the community a destination for the people of Frederick County. I m thrilled to lead FCPL during such an exciting time, and I m looking forward to this next chapter. Q. This year s summer challenge at FCPL was themed Radio Frederick. Given the focus on music, can you share your favorite musician or album? A. It s too hard to pick a favorite, but one album I am playing a lot lately is Kamasi Washington s The Epic. The title tells you everything. It is a massive work, running close to three hours. Washington is a tenor saxophonist and you can hear echoes of John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders in his work. His original pieces particularly those with vocal and string arrangements are wonderful and expansive, and his interpretation of Debussy s Claire de Lune is just beautiful. FCPL.ORG 1

6 ONE MARYLAND ONE BOOK FCPL is pleased to announce that the 2018 One Maryland One Book author will visit Frederick County in October. One Maryland One Book is a program from Maryland Humanities that strives to unite Marylanders of diverse backgrounds through the shared experience of reading the same book. Each year in September and October, public libraries, schools, and community organizations across the state participate by hosting programs related to the book selection and its major themes. Selected for its theme of Justice, the 2018 One Maryland One Book is Bloodsworth: The True Story of the First Death Row Inmate Exonerated by DNA Evidence by Tim Junkin. Bloodsworth is a gripping work of nonfiction that explores a historical milestone in criminal justice that took place in Maryland and would eventually lead to the exoneration of hundreds of others who had been wrongfully accused. Kirk Bloodsworth learned of a new technology, DNA fingerprinting, and realized it was his last chance to prove his innocence. This page-turner explores the crime Bloodsworth was accused of committing, the investigation and trial that led to his conviction, as well as his exoneration due to the innovation and discovery of DNA testing and DNA evidence. The theme of justice will feature heavily in our 2018 One Maryland One Book events. In addition to documentary screenings, book discussions, and an author panel, FCPL will also host Lawyer in the Library in downtown Frederick on Sept. 13 at 4 p.m. where you can receive free one-on-one civil legal advice from Maryland Legal Aid. A complete list of One Maryland One Book events at FCPL can be found on page 25. Visit your local library to pick up a copy of Bloodsworth today or check out the ebook from hoopla, where it is always available with no holds and no waiting. 4 FCPL.ORG

30 LIBRARY LOVE STORIES Ms. Marian Currens Librarian and Donor I was born and raised in Frederick County; I'm a life-long learner and a book lover. Looking back on my life, it seems inevitable that I chose a career in libraries. I've loved books as far back as I can remember. My very first favorites being Drummer Hoff by Barbara and Ed Emberley, and Corduroy by Don Freeman. I remember binge reading the Little House on the Prairie books by Laura Ingalls Wilder at least a couple of times as a child. The very first book I remember loving was Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor, a painful yet powerful novel about a young African American girl and her family in the 1930s American South. I checked it out from my school library after a storyteller came and gave a performance that left me with goosebumps. 'Loved' isn't really the right word. It was the first book that made me cry. I was exposed to racism and injustice through the eyes of someone who lived it, and it left a lasting impact on me. That experience of feeling the breadth of human emotion through someone else s story is something I have continued to chase. The library has always fed my natural curiosity. As a small child, C. Burr Artz was my first library. When the main entrance was on Patrick Street, I remember walking in and feeling as if I had entered something so much larger than it actually was. In my mind, there were endless opportunities for exploration and whenever it was time to go home, it was far too soon. We moved from Frederick to a house outside of Emmitsburg when I was still young. We lived in a rural area with few neighbors and even fewer children my age, so the library and reading became a significant source of entertainment. As an undergrad at Hood College, the Hodson Beneficial Library was a place of refuge. A calm, centered place where I could concentrate. As an adult, Frederick County Public Libraries is where I found my calling. Not only is the work rewarding and challenging, but I have also met some of my favorite people here among my co-workers and the patrons I interact with on a daily basis. To me, the role of the public library has not changed much over the years. Libraries have always been about information and enrichment. As time passes, technology changes, culture changes, and library services begin to look a little different, but at its heart, it s still the same institution. I have had the privilege of supporting the library as a patron, volunteer, college intern, employee, and as a donor. Becoming a donor was the natural next step in supporting the library. I have given my time and energy to the library, and it is still something I feel strongly about supporting. If you d like to learn more about making a gift to support the library, visit fcpl.org/support. 28 FCPL.ORG

31 GIVING BACK Many community members are eager for the new library to open. The Friends of the Myersville Library are collecting donations of books for book sales to benefit the library. To find out more about the Friends of the Library visit facebook.com/ friendsofmyersvillelibrary or send an to A New Library for Myersville, More Than Just Books On the heels of opening an extraordinary new library in Walkersville, Frederick County Public Libraries (FCPL) is turning its attention to another area in need of library service. After decades of discussion and planning, a new library is finally coming to the Town of Myersville. Construction began in August and the library is expected to open in summer Located at Harp Place Park, the new facility will be approximately 7,000 square feet. In addition to offering all the library services that FCPL is known for, including access to computers, Wi-Fi, and an expanded collection of books, movies, magazines, and other materials, the library has been intentionally designed to serve as a community meeting space; a destination for meetings and events. The new library will also incorporate a historic trolley car, purchased by the Town from the Easterday family. Originally built in 1918, Trolley Car 150 was used on the historic Hagerstown and Frederick Railway that ran through Myersville and will serve as a unique one-of-a-kind attraction for a library that is already more than just books. The library would not be possible without the funding support provided by Frederick County Government, the Town of Myersville, the State of Maryland, and our generous donors. To find out more about becoming a donor and making a gift to support the Myersville library visit fcpl.org/support or, make a gift today by completing the remittance below.
