2 THE BULLETin CALIFORNIA STATE COLLEGE «SAN BERNARDINO 1965,*A 1980 October Ht, I98O ENROLLMENT SETS RECORD AT A6A9 The student population at CSCSB increased almost 10 percent for the fall quarter. Full-time equivalent enrollment is up 306 over the fall quarter a year ago to 3,422 students. The head count, the number of students enrolled full and part time, is up 4l8 students from a year ago to 4,649. Both figures represent an increase of 9.8 percent. The increase in enrollment over the spring quarter is even more dramatic. The PTE is up students from 2,967-9 to 3,422 and the head count is up 633 students from 4,016. Both are roughly a percent increase. The bulk of the increase came in graduate students with juniors transferring from community colleges and first-time freshmen next. No one knows why there has been such a dramatic increase in the number of students attending college, especially when all predictions were for a declining enrollment. What is clear is that the enrollment boost is a system-wide phenomenon. Among the theories that have been advanced is one that the increase is due to economics. Between the inflationary squeeze and the reduction of available jobs, many students feel they are forced back to school to improve their skills to better enable them to compete in the job market. The statisticians, incidentally, feel that the upsurge in fall enrollments in no way invalidates earlier predictions that college enrollments will decline gradually over the next several years, then increase again. OPEN ENROLLMENT DEADLINE NEARS The annual insurance open enrollment period will end Friday, Oct. 31. During open enrollment college employees may make changes in their medical and hospital care programs. Anyone who wants to make a change should contact Personnel. GHOULS TO VISIT CAMPUS FRIDAY Ghosties and ghoulies and short-legged beasties from the Children's Center will be trick-or-treating in costume next Friday in the Student Services, Administration and Library buildings. The mini-goblins will be on campus 9-11 a.m.

The awards were presented by President Pfau during the annual staff meetings. This is the same series LACHAISE LIFE AND WORK To BE EXAMINED IN TALK Cal State art history major Deborah Waters will present a lecture on Gaston Lachaise, whose sculpture and drawings are on display in the Visual Arts Building gallery, at noon Oct. 29 in Visual Arts Room 110. In addition to CSCSB faculty, staff and students, classes or individuals from other area colleges and secondary schools are invited to attend the lecture. Old favorites among the tunes on display include "The Bells of St. Mary's" published in 1917, "As Time Goes By" from the 19^1 Warner Brothers classic "Casablanca" and "Buttons and Bows" from the 19^8 Bob Hope movie "Paleface." The oldest piece is "College Days March," a 1900 two-step by C. Harry Kain. MORE LAWMAKERS To SPEAK HERE Two more lawmakers, Congressman Jerry Lewis and Assemblyman Bill Leonard, will speak on campus next week as part of the Associated Students' noon lecture series in the Student Union multipurpose room. Lewis will appear Wednesday and Leonard the following day. are free and open to faculty, staff and students. The noon lectures COOKBOOKS ON SALE A11 cookbooks in stock at the campus bookstore will go on sale at half price starting Monday. The sale will last through Nov. 14; the bookstore is clearing its shelves of cookbooks.

5 PUBLICATIONS Stella I, Clark (Spanish) Had an essay, "Myth and Stereotypes of the Mexican Woman," in a collection titled Woman and Society in Latin America published in Chile. Dr. Stuart Ell ins (Psychology) had a paper titled "Olfactory Discrimination of Lithium Chloride by the Coyote, Canis Latrans" accepted for publication in the interdisciplinary journal Behavioral and Neural Biology. The research was done for a master's thesis by Glenn Martin, a Cal State graduate student in psychology, who co-authored the paper. Dr. Sheldon Kamieniecki (Political Science) has a paper "Improving Public Representation" accepted for publication in The Bureaucrat. Dr. Robert O'Brien (Sociology) and Dr. Sheldon Kamieniecki (Political Science) had a paper "An Exploratory Study of Social Class and Energy Issues" accepted for publication in Political Behavior. In addition, questions designed by the two professors will be used in the I98O national election survey to be conducted by the University of Michigan. Dr. David Shichor (Sociology) (with Donald R. Ranish) published an article titled "President Carter's Vietnam Amnesty; An Analysis of a Public Policy Decision" in Presidential Studies Quarterly, Vol. X, No. 3» Summer I98O. SPEAKING OUT Pr. Charles Christie (Public Administration) presented a paper, "Public Decision Making Under Increased Scarcity: Heuristic Model For Public Managers," at a meeting of the Inland Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration in Riverside Oct. 16. Dr. Pat Mclnturff (Business Administration) co-authored the paper. Dr. Hal Hoverland (Administration) participated in a panel on "Professional Productivity: What Is It?" at a meeting of the Human Factors Society in Los Angeles Oct. 15. Dr. J. Cordell Robinson (History) in Recent Colombian Politics," at Studies meeting in Laguna Beach, executive board of the Council on presented a paper, "Presidents and Generals the Pacific Coast Council on Latin American Dr. Robinson was also elected chair of the Latin American Studies. A NOTEWORTHY Pr. Michael Clarke (Public Administration), Dr. Sheldon Kamien 1ecki (Po111ica1 Science) and Dr. Robert O'Brien (Sociology) have been named consultants to the United States Environmental Protection Agency to advise on the social and political effects of two toxic waste disposal sites in the Southwest. Dr. Ed White (English) has been renominated as one of the two persons representing the CSUC on the Los Angeles Basin Writing Council executive committee. The committee is part of the California Writing Project, which has as its goal the improvement of writing instruction In all public schools and institutions of higher learning.

6 DAYLIGHT SAVINGS ENDS SUNDAY We all get an extra hour's sleep this weekend with the end of Daylight Savings Time at 2 a.m., Sunday. Clocks should be set back one hour at bedtime Saturday night.
