Leo McCarthy repeatedly More Public Understanding expressed concern here Tuesday about the lack of public support of higher education in California. "We are going Into a very difficult period in the coming decades and we need to develop public understanding," he said during a brief visit with senior administrators. Faculty Senate and Associated Student officers and the PawPrInt editor. McCarthy, who Is an attorney, also expressed Interest In Improving CBEST scores and teacher training programs, in methods of testing student achievement In college. McCarthy said he Is focusing his efforts, as lieutenant governor, on economic development and education, areas which are Intertwined. He serves on the CSU Board of Trustees and the UC Board of Regents by virtue of his elected position. Although the official fall census date enrollment statistics have not yet been processed by the computer, preliminary fig- ures as of Wednesday Indicate Cal State, San Bernardino has achieved the final step needed to become a university. Enrollment Tops MArir Niimdcd llagic NUMBER The college must have an official enrollment of 508l students on census date. The preliminary count as of late Wednesday was a record-setting 5^35 students. Afternoon and evening drops will be subtracted by computer. In order to attain university status, the college must meet four of five criteria established by the Board of Trustees. Cal State now has achieved the necessary four: enrollment, percept of faculty with terminal degrees, number of accredited programs and number of graduates. The college will now submit the necessary papers to the Chancellor's Office, which will analyze the requirements achieved and forward a report to the CSU Board of Trustees and then to the California Post Secondary Commission. At this point, it Is not possible to predict when all reviews will be completed and university status approved.

3 GRADUATE APPOINTED To ADVISORY BOARD Roberto Velasquez, superintendent of the Cucamonga School District, has been appointed to the College Advisory Board by President Anthony H. Evans. Velasquez earned his B.A. here in 1972 and was employed as a tutor in the Educational Opportunity Program on campus while completing his first teaching credential. A native of Colton, Velasquez worked in his father's service station while ^"ending San Bernardino Vaiiey Colieqe and supported himself and his family as a music an du i^g htnime at Cal State. He pays tribute to his father, the iate Thomas Velasquez, for giving him faith in his ability and the drive to complete his education despite considerable adversity. Velasquez' son, Robert, and daughter, Kathy, are now students at Cal, young^t daughter, Cindy, is in the eighth grade. Velasquez and his wife, Mary Louise 1ive in Rial to. The College Advisory Board is a group of business, civic f ^ " "3 meet regularly with President Evans to review the needs of the college and the areas which it serves. ARTIST TO SPEAK THURSDAY NOON Bob Zoell of Los Angeles, one of two artists featured in the current show in the Art Gallery, will speak at 12 noon Thursday, Oct. 20, in VA 110. The lecture, illustrated by slides, is free. Zoell will present a history of his work in various media. He has been a professiona illustrator and designer, as well as painter. His credits include design curity Pacific Bank logo, Time Magazine covers and other airbrush graphics for maga zines such as Esqui re. Any active or recently retired member of the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) who is interested in running NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR PERS BOARD for a position on the board may secure nominating procedures from the Personnel Office, Nomination petitions, signed by at least 100 PERS members, must be received at PERS headquarters in Sacramento by Oct. 2^. A student Bridge Club which is organizing on campus seeks a faculty member willing to serve as advisor for the current school BRIDGE CLUB NEEDS ADVISOR year. The club has received temporary recognition as a campus organization while it endeavors to organize. 4 AUW Campaign Sets $12^500 Goal For Campus Michael Anderson, executive dean for college relations, will spearhead this year's Arrowhead United Way campaign on campus. The goal is to raise $12,500 and to Increase the number of contributors by AO percent. Assisting Anderson will be Richard Bennecke, last year's AUW coordinator. The 1982 campaign generated $10,A80, which was a 32 percent increase over the prior year. The solicitation will be conducted on campus during the next several weeks. A special film describing the Arrowhead United Way will be shown at 12 noon, Monday and Tuesday in the Student Union Multipurpose Room. Refreshments will be provided, courtesy of PFM. Placement Center The career planning and Placement Center will extend its nor- ExTENDS Hours working hours four nights per week during the fall quarter to serve late day and evening students. Mrs. Lynn Moss, placement advisor, will be in the School of Education office, PL 500, from H:30 to 6 p.m.,-mondays and Thursdays and in the Career Planning and Placement Center, SS 116, until 6 p.m., Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Professional AcTIVITIES or. Frances F. Serdan (Anthropology) presented a paper, "The Economics of Aztec Trade and Tribute," at the Dumbarton Oaks Conference on The Aztec Temple Mayor Oct. 8-9 in Washington, D.C. Dr. Irvin Howard (Education) gave a seminar, "Identifying Your Leadership and Work Styles--Effeetive Communication in Teaming," to the home economics and agricultural sciences faculty at Mt. San Antonio College Oct. 7. Dr. Jorun Johns (German) chaired a section and moderated a discussion on "Authors as Diarists" at the annual conference of the Western Assn. of German Studies in Madison, Wis., Sept. 30-Oct. 2. Dr. Clark Mayo (English) was a respondent to two papers, "Shakespeare and the Prophets of Doom and "The Book of Jonah, Narrative Poetry and Contemporary Hermeneutlcs,"^at the Modern Language Assn.'s western regional meeting of the Conference on Christianity and Literature. Dr. Ansa Ojanlatva (Sponsored Programs) has been nominated to the publications committee of the International Union for Health Education/North American Regional Office and named chair of Its subcommittee on computer-assisted instruction. Dr. David Shichor (Criminal Justice) presented two papers last month. One titled "Gender Differences in Elderly Arrests" was given at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Assn. in Detroit. The other, written with Donald Ranish of Antelope Valley College, was "Combatting White-Collar Crime: The Legacy of ABSCAM," given at the IXth World Conference of Criminology Sept in Vienna. Dr. Bradford Wilson (Political Science) served as a review panelist for applications submitted to the National Endowment for the Humanities' program Constitutional Fellowships for College Teachers Sept. 29 in Washington, D.C.

5 Health Center Not student Health center wlll not provide flu shots this _ year. However, the San Bernardino Public Health Depart- PrOVIDING rlu ohots offer them for $2. Shots are recommended for people over 55 or those who have chronic health problems, severe anemia or other chronic illnesses. The Health Center can provide information on various locations throughout the county where the flu shots are available. PE Facilities Hours Are Set The hours for recreational swimming in the college pool are: Monday and Wednesday, 12:15"! p.m. and 2:30-5 p.m.; Tuesday and Thurs day, 12 to 1 p.m.; Friday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 1-5 p.m. The courts are available for use Monday through Friday, 4:30-8:15 p.m. Sponsored Programs The telephone for the office of sponsored Programs will be installed next week and the number will be Ext A secretary is now in the office, PL 268, from 8 a.m.-noon, Monday through Friday. Community Service Dr. Margaret Atwell (Education) spoke to faculty of North Shore Elementary School in Big Bear Lake Sept. 30 on "Teaching Higher Level Thinking Skills." Dr. Irving H. Buchen (Humanities) has been named to a steering committee appointed by Chancellor W. Ann Reynolds to study the possibility of the CSU system acquiring the ISOMATA camp at Idyllwild. Dr. Charles Christie (Public Administration) was a panelist at the Education Townhall Oct. 8, sponsored by Congressman George E. Brown Jr. He served on the postsecondary education panel moderated by Dr. Richard A. Jones, chancellor of the San Bernardino Community College. Dr. Loralee MacPike (Graduate Programs) spoke to the Women's Division of the San Bernardino Chamber of Commerce Wednesday about the Adult College Re-entry Program. Dr. Tom Meisenhelder (Sociology) has been elected a delegate-at-large to the national convention of Democratic Socialists of America Oct in New York City. Dr. Cindy Paxton (Health Science and Human Ecology) has been appointed to the public education committee of the San Bernardino Chapter of the American Heart Assn. Dr. Greg Price (Physical Education and Recreation) presented an in-service workshop on elementary physical education at Lincoln School in San Bernardino Oct. 12. Dr. Richard Saylor (Music) spoke about current problems in the arts at the annual meet* ing of the San Bernardino County Music Educators Oct. 9 in San Bernardino. A chamber' group from the Cal State Orchestra also played for the educators. Noteworthy or. Dlanne E. IrwIn (Learning Center) will be included in the edition of Who's Who in the West.
