2 {bulletin California state college, san bennardino May lif, 1982 VOTES CHALLENGED Hore than 500 ballots in the vote for a union to represent J I, r- the faculty are being challenged by all parties involved, in- IN UNION LLECTION eluding the CSU. In the count Tuesday in Sacramento, the United Professors of California led the Congress of Faculty Associations with 6,^73 to 6,A5A votes. This run-off election follows the February voting in which both unions received k2 percent of the ballots, with 16 percent of the faculty choosing no representation. The challenged ballots will now be subject to negotiations. PERB has set a June 3 date for a meeting to discuss the issues. Negotiations can take up to two years. Academic support personnel voted ^86 to AlA, with 11 votes challenged, to be represented by the United Professors of California. In the run-off election for health care support, CSEA won the right to represent the Health Center personnel by a vote of 120 to 69. Mednick, a researcher in is lopic UP rree LECTURE genetic factors in criminal behavior, has been investigating the possibility that biology, rather than environment, is a cause of criminal action. In a free lecture titled "Biological Factors in Antisocial Behavior," Dr. Mednick will speak at 8 p.m., Wednesday, in the Student Union. The lecture is designed to be of interest to professionals in the fields of crime control and education and to the general public. Dr. David Shichor (Sociology) is arranging Dr. Mednick's visit. Dr. Mednick is professor of psychology at USC and director of the Psykologisk Institute at Kommunehospitalet in Copenhagen. A leading authority in research on biological factors in antisocial behavior, he has authored and coauthored more than 60 articles, chapters and books on this subject. The authorresearcher earned his Ph.D. from Northwestern University and his medical degree from the University of Copenhagen. The meeting is expected to continue until late afternoon, following which announcements will be made.
3 REDUCED WORK TIME ^he chancellor's office has issued CSU policy and regulations establishing a reduced work time program, and the college has PROGRAM APPROVED established procedures implementing that program for all employees other than academic teaching employees. Reduced work time means working less than full-time and taking a pro rata reduction in salary and benefi ts. Options available to employees include working fewer hours per day, fewer hours or days per pay period or fewer days per year. All full-time non-teaching employees, except public safety officers, are able to request participation in the program. Participation will not be feasible for employees who are in supervisory or managerial positions. The college will not solicit employee participation in the reduced work-time program unless the Chancellor's Office contemplates a budget reduction of ]% or more and the reduced work time would save jobs through redistribution of the work load. The complete description of the reduced work-time program is on file in the Personnel Office. 4 A,S,^ STUDENT UNION The boards of directors of the Associated Students and the FEES TO INCREASE student union plan to modify their fees effective fall President Pfau has approved the proposed fees and requests for the chancellor's approval are in process. Following is the schedule for present and proposed Student Union fees: ^4 198IT-8S Fall quarter $8.00 TTTW $1A.OO $15.00 Winter quarter Spring quarter ^00 Summer quarter gloo Effective fall 1982, part-time students will pay the same Associated Students fees as full-time students have been paying. They will be $8 for fall quarter; $6, winter quarter; $6, spring quarter; and $3, summer quarter. CONCERT HONORS The wind and Jazz ensembles, directed by Keating Johnson, will PERCY GRAINGER present a concert at 8:15 p.m., Sunday, in the Recital Hall. The Wind Ensemble will feature four works by Percy Grainger in honor of his 100th birthday. Graduate student Gerald Willis will conduct the Wind Ensemble during Hoist's "Somerset Rhapsody." The Jazz Ensemble will perform "Walk on the Water," "Have You Changed," "Samba These Days" and Hoagy Carmichael's "Skylark." The ensembles will combine to perform a new work by David Miller, a graduate student at the University of Southern California. Admission to the concert is $3 general, $1.50 students. SIX SENIORS six senior art students will exhibit their work in the Gallery begin- EXHIBIT ART Monday, A reception honoring the artists will be held from 7 to 10 p.m., Monday. Exhibitors are: Teruko Altruz, etchings, lithographs and acrylic paintings; Greg Hernandez, airbrush paintings which reflect photo realism; Ileen Mills, ceramic teapots, wine goblets, bowls and other food service items; Marlin Halverson, clay and wooden whistles; Randall Lanier, black-and-white photos of steam and diesel engines, aircraft, heavy equipment and vintage trolleys; Gary Cominotto, raku and ceramic jars. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. closes June 2. The show 'THE BOYFRIEND' BEGINS THURSDAY is musical director. The spring production, "The Boyfriend" will open Thursday evening in the Theatre. Students in the Music and Theatre Arts departments will join in presenting this musical comedy by Sandy Wilson. Dr. Amanda Sue Rudlsill will direct. Keating Johnson Dr. Helene Koon (English) is dialect coach. Performances are set for 8:15 p.m., Thursday-Saturday, May 20-22, and Tuesday-Saturday, May Admission is $3.50 general, $1.75 students and senior citizens. 5 SPEAKING OUT Pr. Margaret Atwell (Education) spoke during the annual conference of the International Reading Assn. April in Chicago. Her topic was "Reading as a Writing Strategy." Dr. 1rving H. Buchen (Humanities) spoke about "The Future of Futures" during a Futures Forum April 15 at Cal State, Chico. Dr. Vivien Bull (French) gave a speech titled "Off the Tourist Track in England" to a class at Belvedere School May 7. Dr. Naomi Caiden (Public Administration) presented a paper on "The Myth of the Annual Budget" at the spring symposium of the American Assn. for Budget and Program Analysis May 7 in Washington, D.C. She also spoke on the balanced budget during a briefing session organized by the United States General Accounting Office May 5 and 6. Drs. Gloria Cowan and Lynda Warren (Psychology) and a former graduate student, Joyce Young, presented a paper at the Western Psychological Assn. meeting last month in Sacramento. The paper was titled "Physicans' and Nurses' Perceptions of Menopausal Symptoms." Dr. Warren and Kris Fromkin, a graduate student in psychology, also presented a paper titled "The Experience and Expression of Depression: Sex Differences and Similarities." Drs. Margaret Doane and Loralee MacPike (English) have been asked by the Office of the Chancellor to read essays in the May 1982 English Placement Test. Dr. Amer El-Ahraf (Health Science and Human Ecology) presented two papers at a meeting of the Assn. of University Programs in Health Administration. They are titled "Opportunities, Costs and Benefits of Networking Education Resources" and "Issues in the Evolution of the CSU Multi-Campus Baccalaureate Health Administration Programs," The meeting was April in Washington, D.C. Dr. El-Ahraf directs the CSU multi-campus program under federal funding. Dr. Dean Fetter (Continuing Education) spoke on "Career Opportunities for Doctorates in the Humanities and Social Sciences" May 5 at UC, Riverside. Dr. Marvin Frost (Geography) spoke about Central America to a class at Belvedere School May 7. He also gave a presentation on the Okefenokee Swamp May 12 at Del Vallejo Middle School Helping Center. Dr. Hal Hoverland (Administration) spoke to the Host Lions Club of San Bernardino on "Management Misinformation Systems" on May 6. Dr. Ina Katz (SAIL) presented a summary of her work "Validity of the Cloze Procedure for Diagnosis and Text Evaluation at the College Level," coauthored by Dr. Patrick Mullen (Education), at the annual convention of the International Reading Assn. April 29 in Chicago. Dr. Adria Klein (Education) spoke about "Schools in China" to a class at Belvedere [ School May 7. Dr. Dave Lutz (Psychology) was a panel moderator for the program evaluation phase of the annual Student Research Conference May 6 at Cal State, Dominguez Kills. Two students from Cal State, San Bernardino gave presentations: Steve Coffey spoke on "Program Effectiveness: Outcome Study of the Jerry L. Pettis Memorial Veterans Administration Hospital Pain Unit," and Rachel Louise Monroe spoke on "Negative Aspects of the Equal Employment Opportunity Guidelines."
6 PRESIDENTS HONORED AT RRAD FvFNTNf At an evening honoring the graduates, sponsored by Associated Students and the Alumni Assn. last Friday, a plaque was presented to President and Mrs. Pfau for their 20 years of service to the students and the college. A $500 scholarship honoring Dr. Pfau has been established by the Associated Students to be presented by the Alumni Assn. to a graduate student in I A certificate for distinguished service to the Cal State campus community was presented by the Alumni Assn. to Pauline Barbour, AS president. Bradford Wllson (Political Science) has an article on a conference on "The Legal and Political Ramifications of Federalism" held at Yale Law School accepted for publication by Public Research, Syndicated, a national newspaper syndication service. NOTEWORTHY Or. Margaret Glbbs, a professor emeritus in the School of Administration, was honored by the Inland Empire Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration for her contributions in public administration May 13 in Riverside. Laura Gomez de Chamorro (Student Affirmative Action) was initiated by Alpha Pi Chapter into the Delta Kappa Gamma, an international honor society of women educators, on April 20.
