It is a simple story populated with well-developed characters and a road trip that is consistently unpredictable and enticing. After more than twenty-years of bad decisions and spectacular personal failures, Frank Stevens desperately needs to be pulled out of the death spiral he s fallen into. A chance and entirely unexpected reunion with his best friend from childhood presents that exact opportunity at the precise moment he needs it most. November 12, 2014: CATHERINE THE GREAT: PORTRAIT OF A WOMAN Written by Robert K. Massie and reviewed by Ana Maria Myers, Humanities and Language Arts Professor, Polk State College THE WALL STREET JOURNAL calls this biography a tale of power, perseverance, and passion... a great story in the hands of a master storyteller. Written by the Pulitzer Prize winning author of Peter the Great, Nicholas and Alexandra, and The Romanovs, CATHERINE is the extraordinary story of an obscure German princess who became one of the most remarkable, powerful, and captivating women in history. Born into a minor noble family, Catherine transformed herself into empress of Russia by sheer determination. For thirty-four years, the government, foreign policy, cultural development, and welfare of the Russian people were in her hands. She dealt with domestic rebellion, foreign wars, and the tidal wave of political change and violence churned up by the French Revolution. Catherine s family, friends, ministers, generals, lovers, and enemies all are here, vividly brought to life. History offers few stories richer than that of Catherine the Great. In this book, an eternally fascinating woman is returned to life. December 10, 2014: I GOT SCHOOLED: The Unlikely Story of How a Moonlighting Movie Maker Learned the Five Keys to Closing America's Education Gap Written by M. Night Shyamalan and reviewed by Lynn Wilson, Director of Finance for Polk State College Foundation, Polk County School Board Member I GOT SCHOOLED offers a look at America s educational achievement gap that could only have come from an outsider. Famed director M. Night Shyamalan has long had a serious interest in education. The founda tion he and his wife started once gave college scholarships to promising inner-city students, but Shyamalan realized that these scholarships did nothing to improve education for all the other students in underperforming schools. When he learned that some schools were succeeding with similar student populations, he traveled across the country to find out how they did this and whether these schools had something in common. He eventually learned that there are five keys to closing America s achievement gap. But just as we must do several things to maintain good health eat the right foods, (over)

22 exercise regularly, get a good night s sleep so too must we use all five keys to turn around our lowest-performing schools. These five keys are used by all the schools that are succeeding, and no schools are succeeding without them. Before he discovered them, Shyamalan investigated some popular reform ideas that proved to be dead ends, such as smaller class size, truculent unions, and merit pay for teachers. He found that the biggest obstacle to school reform is cognitive biases: too many would-be reformers have committed themselves to false solutions. January 14, 2015: Book title to be announced Reviewed by Betty Shinn, Retired librarian from Polk County School Board, served as the first paid professional librarian of Lake Alfred Public Library, currently involved in the management of Shinn, Groves Inc. February 11, 2015: A CALL TO ACTION: WOMEN, RELIGION, VIOLENCE, AND POWER Written by President Jimmy Carter and reviewed by panelists Karen White, Chuck Warren, Doice Jean Osborne, and Shirley Curtis-Ference The world s discrimination and violence against women and girls is the most serious, pervasive, and ignored violation of basic human rights: This is President Jimmy Carter s call to action. President Carter was encouraged to write this book by a wide coalition of leaders of all faiths. His urgent report covers a system of discrimination that extends to every nation. Women are deprived of equal opportunity in wealthier nations and owned by men in others, forced to suffer servitude, child marriage, and genital cutting. The most vulnerable, along with their children, are trapped in war and violence. A Call to Action addresses the suffering inflicted upon women by a false interpretation of carefully selected religious texts and a growing tolerance of violence and warfare. Key verses are often omitted or quoted out of context by male religious leaders to exalt the status of men and exclude women. And in nations that accept or even glorify violence, this perceived inequality becomes the basis for abuse. President Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, have visited 145 countries, and The Carter Center has had active projects in more than half of them. Around the world, they have seen inequality rising rapidly with each passing decade. This is true in both rich and poor countries, and among the citizens within them. Carter draws upon his own experiences and the testimony of courageous women from all regions and all major religions to demonstrate that women around the world, more than half of all human beings, are being denied equal rights. This is an informed and passionate charge about a devastating effect on economic prosperity and unconscionable human suffering. It affects us all.
