No attempt has been made to correct original errors, nor to interfere with original spelling; it should be noted that some unusual names are phonetic e.g. McInvin is MacIonmhuinn, modern MacKinnon. The name McCaldred appears in varied guise, McCannell is McConnell, Bue is Buie. Note, for example, McGobhan married in 1803, became Smith when christening a child in "Macilevorche" is modern Currie. Some placenames are no longer used. Buthbeg is beside Dunan nan Con; Achadh nan Daraich is above Milbuie; North Muir adjoins Beinn a Tuath. For further details of these or other locations, please contact Kevin Byrne. Note that dates are for Baptism actual date of birth would be rather earlier. The minister visited Colonsay only three or four times a year until 1832 and in any case baptism was, in many cases, something of an after-thought. In some cases, reference to later census returns might help to confirm the year-of-birth. In both 1821 and 1824, boys were christened Finlay ; could one of them be Finlay of Colonsay, stalker to Campbell of Islay, whose 1847 photographic portrait hangs in the National Portrait Gallery?
