4 Biographical/Historical Note Henry William McMillan was born in Robertson County, North Carolina, on July 18, 1830, to John H. and Janet McNeil McMillan. He received his education at the University of North Carolina and moved to Arkansas in 1856 where he married Frances Toole Williams a year later. He worked as a school teacher and lawyer in Camden, Arkansas. When the Civil War began, McMillan joined the Confederate Army and worked his way from first lieutenant to lieutenant colonel with the 12th Arkansas Infantry Regiment. His commander was Colonel E. W. Gantt. After the war, McMillan moved his family to Arkadelphia, Arkansas, where he helped establish the law firm of Stewart, McCabe and McMillan. He practiced law there until his death in The McMillans had six children: Estelle McMillan Blake ( ), Elizabeth Swan McMillan Crawford ( ), Dougald McMillan ( ), John Henry McMillan ( ), Carrie McMillan Wallis ( ), and David Williams McMillan ( ). Many of their descendants currently live in Arkadelphia. Scope and Contents Civil War muster rolls, a letter from H. W. McMillan to his wife Fannie, notes to and from Civil War officers, photographs and 20th century family papers comprise this collection. Two empty frames are also part of the collection.
