1 THE RITE RECORDER Valley of Cincinnati January 2011 Club 32 Brings a Modern Space to Our Historic Place A Preview of the Spring Reunion Boxing Matches Hit the Auditorium A Sneak Peek at Upcoming Events
2 2 Club 32 Takes Shape at the Masonic Center A new dimension to the Scottish Rite experience is coming soon What comes to mind when you think of the Cincinnati Masonic Center? For some, the CMC is simply home. Others might say it s a historical building that boasts some of finest and most unique architectural elements in the city. And some need only mention the Scottish Rite Cathedral our sacred space. Those who treasure this great building will soon have yet another reason to love and promote it: Club 32. What is Club 32? It s a new and exciting concept one that your Board of Trustees has supported with the dedication of more than 4,000 square feet of space in the CMC. Current funding is by donation, and labor is provided by a team of volunteers. The end result will be a hub in which Scottish Rite Masons can elevate the great fraternal experience we share to new levels. Adjoining the Club 32 space is a 1,200-square-foot workout area, scheduled to open in early 2011, with weight machines, treadmills, stationary bicycle, elliptical machine, and boxing bags. When finished, Club 32 will offer billiards, ping pong, foosball, air hockey, game tables, a wide-screen TV and a ser- ving area. In a later phase of development, Club 32 would offer modern bathrooms and shower facilities, all of which depend on financial support. This new concept is designed for Scottish Rite Masons who enjoy visiting the Cincinnati Masonic Center and wish to see as much of the facility as possible used to its potential. Club 32 will be a magnificent space in which to exercise, socialize, relax, and enjoy good company and good conversation. The Blue Lodge tenants that meet in the building are also supporting this project in hopes of using it as a membership tool for future growth, says Robert Dumford, 33º, executive director of the Valley of Cincinnati. While your membership in Club 32 is inherently part of your Scottish Rite dues, we can certainly benefit from Blue Lodge growth. Want to visit or lend a hand? If you d like to look at this great work in progress, or if you have a particular skill set you d like to contribute to the development of Club 32, please call Robert Dumford, 33º, at or send him an at rdumford@32masons.com. When we re not conferring degrees, we ll be presenting December s Rose, an hour-long performance that promotes the Masonic tenet of charity. It centers around a 100-year-old Lodge in the Midwest whose members include local farmers and business owners who take Masonry very seriously and do their best to live by its great teachings. The play is open to members of the public! Current Scottish Rite dues cards are required for degree events, and candidates must bring current Blue Lodge dues cards to register. FEAST OF THE PASCHAL LAMB This celebration commemorates Passover and Holy Week. Join us at 7:30 p.m. on April 21, 2011 as the Valley of Cincinnati brings the Feast of the Paschal Lamb back to the Scottish Rite Cathedral. The event is open to the public at no charge. ANNUAL MEETING AT THE CINCINNATI MASONIC CENTER May 12, 2011 is your next opportunity to elect the leadership of the Valley of Cincinnati. The annual meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. Current dues cards are required for admission. FAMILY DAY AT THE CINCINNATI ZOO We ll take over the Cincinnati Zoo s Massai Mara shelter from 12:30-2:30 p.m. and have lunch there at 1:00. Admission is $15.00 for adults and $10.00 for children The fee covers entry, parking, and picnic lunch. If you have a zoo membership, use it to pay just $7.00 per person (ages 2 and up). A parking pass is available for $5.00 for zoo memberships not covered by parking. The zoo is open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. CMC Auditorium Hosts First Boxing Match The Cincinnati Masonic Center is home to several unique attractions, some of which are only accessible at very special times. Even if you ve had the chance to check out the hidden treasures, you ve never been able to catch a boxing match in the building until now. Robert Dumford, 33º, executive director of the Valley of Cincinnati, has booked the Scottish Rite Auditorium for boxing matches throughout the year as a source of additional revenue for the Valley. These fully licensed and insured events feature their own security and are a major draw for the Cincinnati Masonic Center. The inaugural fight, held on November 27, 2010, was sold out! The doors open for the next matchup at 7:30 p.m. on January 15, If you re interested in purchasing tickets or learning about fights scheduled for the rest of the year, please contact Ill. Bro. Dumford at or rdumford@32masons.com. Notice to All Members A vote will be held on changes to our by-laws at the January stated meeting of the Valley of Cincinnati, to be held on January 13, These changes are being instituted to bring our by-laws into compliance with changes made by the Supreme Council at its last session. 3
4 When was the last time you experienced an entirely new Scottish Rite degree? Do not miss the inaugural exemplification of Brothers of the Trail, the new 19º, at the Spring 2011 Reunion, scheduled for April 16. It will be an unforgettable moment in the history of the Valley of Cincinnati. Brothers of the Trail completely replaces the former 19º, Grand Pontiff. It is not simply a revision or a rewrite. The setting for Brothers of the Trail is the American West in the mid- 1800s. It takes place on the Oregon Trail at a site called Register Cliff, which stands near modern-day Guernsey, Wyoming. The purpose of the new 19º is to reinforce the importance of aiding the distressed, living up to the promises we make, and making necessary sacrifices to serve those in need. Scottish Rite Masons and candidates will also be able to take in the 4º, 13º, 31º, and 32º. The 13º, Master of the Ninth Arch, is a powerful prelude to the 14º, Grand Elect Mason, and hasn t been portrayed in the Valley in several years. The day will also include a special luncheon that features a theme that complements the new 19º and a meal that rivals the fare that was available on the Oregon Trail in the 1850s. The Spring Reunion will be an experience worth sharing! The petition that appears on the following page is perforated. Please tear it out cleanly, present it to a Master Mason in good standing at your Lodge or in your circle of Masonic friends, and sign it for him. These three easy steps will enable you to bring more light into a Brother s life and take you closer to earning the Brown Jewel, an award of great prestige that the Valley of Cincinnati presents to class builders like you. Your friends look forward to seeing you at the Spring Reunion and welcoming the candidates you bring into our growing family. The photo on this page depicts a wagon rut on the Oregon Trail. Wagon wheels cut ruts such as this one into solid rock.
