1 Ogden City Corp Ogden Golden Hours TIMES Newsletter Date th Street Ogden, UT (801) March 2017 ~ Volume 25~ Issue 3 SUPERVISOR S CORNER By Bob Geier The Vernal Equinox, Let Us Welcome Spring on March 20, 2017 You may know it as the first day of spring, the reality is it is the one of two days a year that daylight and night time are almost equal 12 hours of day and 12 hours of night. Equinox comes from the Latin meaning equal nights. This event was key for early peoples to set calendars. Even in the Americas early people such as the Inca s commemorated this event in big ways! The main pyramid at Chichen Itza known as El Castillo has a staircase that extends from the bottom of the pyramid to the top. At the bottom is a figurehead of a snake that on the one day of the year, the equinox, appears to be a slithering snake when the light hits the pyramid. It gives the appearance that the stone snake head has a body slithering on the pyramid! That took some planning and some great knowledge to plan that effect. Photo from World Mysteries.com You might want to research the Bighorn Medicine Wheel situated in Wyoming at over 10,000 ft. that has astronomical significance. Today all we have to do is look at a calendar to be reminded of the time of year. So enjoy the first day of spring, we deserve it this year. For more information on other interesting early astronomical monuments visit: news.nationalgeographic.com/2016/03/ spring-vernal-equinox-astronomy-native-american/ Antelope Island Field Trip February 14, 2017 We packed up our group and proceeded with refreshments and box lunches to Antelope Island State Park to spend a little time back to nature. During the trip we were able to view the following wildlife: Ferruginous Hawks, Harrier Hawks, Coyote, Deer, Bison, Antelope, Chukar and sundry other wildlife. Had our lunch at the Fielding-Garr Ranch were we entertained one of the volunteer interpreters? A big thanks to Weber Human Services for a great box lunch and Kents Sports Store for lending binoculars and spotting scopes for the event.

6 Page 6 GOLDEN VETERANS Ateeeeeeeeenshun! Christopher Scott of the U.S. Department of Veterans affairs presented at the weekly Veterans meeting on Veteran s benefits. Please join us every Wednesday at 9:30am. Our Veterans meet to discuss issues relative to benefits and current events. All who served to keep America and the World Free are welcome! Quote of the Month You just don't luck into things as much as you'd like to think you do. You build step by step, whether it's friendships or opportunities. Guess Who? Okay everyone, Guess Who is a game in which we will make a few statements about one of our members, and the first one to guess who that member is will win a prize. This means you have to engage yourself and learn about other folks here at the center. That s right, you need to move around at lunch time and question other people in an attempt to get the right information to learn enough about other members so you can make an educated guess. The first one to come to Bob with the right answer will win a special prize! The individual who is the topic of the game will not be eligible. That would be too easy. Okay everyone, a new Guess Who clue. Golden Hours is in need of some volunteers to help at the Front Desk. Our volunteers are vital to the operation of our center. A friendly face and kind words always help to brighten our member s day. Task include answering phones and taking questions relative to our facility and services or selling some of our wares to make some money for the center. Want to help us make a difference or know someone at home that would be a great volunteer at the front desk or the Opp Shop, then have them come in and see one of the staff and we will work with them on finding the perfect fit. Bryce King of the Ogden Nature Center presents on backyard birds during a weekly Wednesday seminar on February 8th. It was a great presentation with a live kestrel as our special guest.

7 Page 7 TAX ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE! Golden Hours Senior Center ( th Street, Ogden) and our partner AARP, are offering free tax assistance to our senior community. Tax appointments are available every Wednesday throughout tax season. This free service is to assist those who have questions, or do not have access to computers to generate their own returns. Last year, the local AARP organization was able to assist over 10,000 people with their returns! The volunteers, in cooperation with AARP, are here to give assistance and aid to our senior population. This benefit is by appointment only! Checkbook if you want to direct deposit any refund(s). Alzheimer s Support Group for Caregivers March 21 ~ The Support Group is held on the third Tuesday of every month from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Kim Boyer is the representative for the Support Group. Respite Group March 21 ~ Paula Ledford is the coordinator for the Respite Group on the third Tuesday of every month from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. This group gives Caregivers a little time for themselves.
