1 Ogden City Corp Ogden Golden Hours Newsletter Date TIMES th Street Ogden, UT (801) October 2016 ~ Volume 24~ Issue 10 UTAH HONOR FLIGHT Their Memorial, Our Mission The Utah Honor Flight, is an organization that Veterans can participate in a whirlwind tour of our nation s capital, its monuments and history at no cost to the veteran! The reality is we are losing 500 WWII veterans each day, and less than a million are still alive of the 16 million that served. Honor Flight recognizes these hero s by focusing on the older veterans. Remember, the WWII memorial wasn t built till 2004, by that time many of our WWII vets had passed without the knowledge of the recognition that they deserved would be built. Front: Mr. Jim Hicks and Mr. Ben Noid, Back: Tim Noid, escort The Golden Vet s group that meets every Wednesday have had three of our veterans participate in the Utah Honor Flight. Mr. Fred Roberts, Mr. Jim Hicks and Mr. Ben Noid all have taken advantage of this opportunity. Right now the focus for the participants are the WWII vet s and Korea War veterans, due to their declining numbers and the urgency that comes with their age. If you are a veteran, you do not have to be a Golden Vet to participate, please see Bob for information and an application. To all our veterans a heartfelt thanks for your service. If you are interested in our Golden Vets Group, it meets every Wednesday at 9:30. SUPERVISOR S CORNER By Bob Geier October is National Pizza Month Holy mackerel, who hasn t indulged in their favorite pizza? Whether it be the plain old cheese pizza or a concoction with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar over a selection of herbs and meats. Most everyone loves pizza! Pizza is not a new item, going back to Greek s and Roman s with their baked flat bread that would be flavored with herbs and olive oil not unlike todays focaccia bread. Naples Italy takes pride in that they feel they are the home of the modern pizza like we enjoy today. At one time it was sold by street vendors and such that the working people of Naples could eat with their hands. To the disgust of the more well off folks of Naples. Tradition states that in recognition of a visit by Queen Margherita that pizza maker Raffaele Esposito created a pizza with fresh tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and basil, the colors of which are representative of the colors on the Italian flag, and this combination is still known as Pizza Margherita! Pizza came to America through with the Italian immigrants and really took off after World War Two, with the return of G.I. s to America who enjoyed the pizza in Italy and Europe. So, next time you grab a slice think back on the long history of the Pizza.

6 Page 6 BBQ with the Ukuleles Thank you to all who came for the end of summer BBQ with the Ukulele group. As usual, they put on a great performance! It is hard to believe that it has only been a year since the Ukulele group began their musical journey. The energy and fun that they bring always makes for an enjoyable time. With about 55 in attendance the evening was fun and energetic. Want to learn to play? A new Ukulele beginners group will begin on Wednesday, October 5, from 6:00pm to 7:00pm. This class will be held weekly. Thought of the Month Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the Life you ve imagined. -Thoreau Looking for Some Volunteers! Golden Hours is in need of some volunteers for the Front Desk and the Opp Shop. That s right you too could help out answering phones and taking questions relative to our facility and services or selling some of our wares to make some money for the center. Want to help us make a difference or know someone at home that would be a great volunteer at the front desk or the Opp Shop, then have them come in and see one of the staff and we will work with them on finding the perfect fit. Guess Who? Okay everyone, Guess Who is a game in which we will make a few statements about one of our members, and the first one to guess who that member is will win a prize. This means you have to engage yourself and learn about other folks here at the center. That s right, you need to move around at lunch time and question other people in an attempt to get the right information to learn enough about other members so you can make an educated guess. The first one to come to Bob with the right answer will win a special prize! The individual who is the topic of the game will not be eligible. That would be too easy. Okay Everyone a New Guess Who Clue Clue 1: Ben Lomond Graduate Clue 2: Enjoys visiting Billings Montana Clue 3: Motivator Clue 4: Born in Rock Springs Clue 5: Likes to Bowl Clue 6: Likes classic cars Clue 7: Likes ping pong Clue 8: Semper Fi! Clue 9: Drives a pickup Clue 10: Likes to Play Pool The answer to this ongoing set of clues is Mike Romero. Judy Evenhuis guessed correctly. Look for new clues on our mystery person in the next newsletter. New Class Time! The Lapidary class which is held on Tuesday evenings has become very popular. So popular, in fact, that the lapidary lab will be open on Monday evenings as well. This new class time will begin on Monday, October 10, at 7pm. The Beehive Rock and Gem Club sponsor our instructors, Lynn Hayes and Michael Rhoades are full of talent, experience and skill.

7 Page 7 Hmmm, Puzzling. Studies show that doing crossword puzzles helps to ward off Alzheimer s disease. Beta-amyloid is a toxic protein that builds up in the brain creating plaque directly linked to Alzheimer s. The more often a person participates in mentally stimulating activities the less build up of Beta-amyloid they have in their brain. Let s keep those brains clear of plaque and puzzle away! DOWN 2 most populous city in California 3 a disorder of the muscles of the eyes 5 by some form of play, amusement, or relaxation 8 the science or study of the practical or industrial arts 9 human speech 11 the act or business transporting goods ACROSS 1 happening or existing in space 4 a passage or sequence selected or quoted from a book, article, film, etc. 6 a man who philanders 7 without destroying or depleting natural resources 10 money in the form of coins or banknotes 12 any center of activity, attention, etc. 13 to reproduce or repeat 14 people living in a particular district 15 educational institution of the highest level One Pot Creamy Chicken and Noodles Ingredients 2 large (or 3 small) boneless, skinless chicken breasts 2 Tbsp olive oil 2 cups chopped raw vegetables (equal amounts of onions, carrots, celery) 1 Tbsp minced garlic Salt & Pepper 1 small can cream of chicken soup + 1 can milk 2 cups chicken broth 1 Tbsp dried parsley 1 tsp dried thyme 1 tsp garlic powder 1/2 pound dry fettuccine pasta 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese + 1/2 cup cheese for topping Instructions 1. Heat olive oil in a 4-5 quart pot. 2. Add chopped vegetables and minced garlic. Saute over medium-high heat for about five minutes, or until vegetables are just becoming tender. 3. Add chicken and season with a couple pinches of salt and a pinch of pepper. Continue to saute over medium heat until chicken is no longer pink. It does not have to be cooked through since it will continue to cook in the sauce. 4. Add cream of chicken soup, milk, chicken broth, pasta and dry seasonings. Stir. 5. Bring to a boil and turn heat down to low. Simmer for minutes or until pasta is tender, stirring every five minutes to keep pasta from sticking together. 6. Once pasta is cooked, remove from heat and stir in 1 cup of cheddar cheese. Sprinkle with remaining cheese. Cover pot and let rest for 5-10 minutes to thicken the sauce. 7. Sprinkle with fresh chopped parsley for garnish.
