1 May 26, 2014 CHILD ABUSE AND MANDATED REPORTERS IMPORTANT: Please read and review the attached information regarding new legislation that affects all of us who are defined as mandated reporters of Child Abuse. Requirements for initial and renewal of licensure, certification or registration are included in the attached. The organization will try to provide you with opportunities to meet your obligations but you are ultimately responsible for securing the credits you need to renew. Listed in the attachment are dates and times for the first group of classes to be offered. We will notify you when we are able to schedule more classes. You must register via NetLearning. PATIENT COMMUNICATION TOOLS Paula Bassi, Director of Staff Education MVH uses Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) for patients who are deaf and require American Sign Language to communicate effectively and safely. The interpreters are medically trained and certified using American Sign Language (ASL) and are available 24/7, 365 days a year, enabling instant access. A laptop/webcam is mounted to a mobile cart for easy transport throughout the hospital. The live video interpreting enables our patients to have person-to-person interactions with an interpreter and our staff which improves the patient experience; provides better communication and understanding; and engages the patient at the point of need. Contact me, at ext when you need to use this service. If VRI is needed during an off shift or on a weekend, contact the nursing supervisor. Reminder for non-english speaking patients, MVH still uses over-the-phone interpreting by calling directly to Language Line. This has not changed. Please print the attached card if your department does not already have this information. KENNYWOOD TICKETS ON SALE NOW Renee Hurley, Director of Patient Relations Team MVH Kennywood day is Sunday, June 8. As done in previous years, each employee receives a free voucher to redeem for a ticket at the gate for that day. Additional discount tickets are available at a cost of $26 for regular Funday passes, and $21 for 55 + passes. Vouchers and all additional tickets are on sale at the Personnel Department. You may purchase by check or a one-time payroll deduction which will be taken from your June 13 paycheck. Forms for payroll deduction are available in the Personnel Department. As in prior years, Kenny the Kangaroo will visit Pavilion 23 at 6 p.m. where there will be a soda fountain and snacks for the kids. The prize drawings take place at 6:30 p.m. For additional information, contact me at ext KING OF THE JUNGLE Mike Milinovich, Pension/Benefits Coordinator, Personnel On the evening of May 17, Monongahela Valley Hospital truly felt as if it was King of the Jungle as 550 guests filled the Westin Convention Center and Hotel in Pittsburgh for the 26 th Annual Gala, Jungle Cruise. The event featured live animals, exotic jungle décor, an elegant dinner, a live band and photo booths. Four individuals and one business were honored for their commitment to excellence and support of the Hospital. MVH was also presented with a trophy for being named among the top 10 percent in the nation for the Healthgrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award. The Mon-Vale Health Resources Fund Development Committee and MVH s Office of Fund Development, who sponsor this event each year, are pleased to announce that this year s gala raised a record breaking $147,000. To all of those who secured sponsorships, made a donation, attended the affair or gave their support in any way to help make this year s gala such a success, we thank you. To view photos from this year s event from your home computer, visit or for more details. Monongahela Valley Hospital s Gala 27 will be held Saturday, May 16, Remember you can pay for your tickets over numerous months through payroll deduction. See Phil Franceschelli in Payroll to sign up today. Sara Schumacher, Vice President of Fund Development
2 May 26, 2014 Page 2 SAFETY TEAM INTERVIEW Once a month, over the coming months, the ComStat team will be conducting interviews with members of each of the Journey to Excellence (J2E) teams. These interviews will help the Team MVH family become more familiar with the projects, goals and events of each team. We are certain you will find your ideal team in the Team MVH journey to excellence. The Safety Team is a lively group made up of a wide variety of members from many different departments some with many years of service and others with just a few. The members unanimously agreed that there are benefits in being part of the team. As Paula Bassi, director of staff education, said, Seeing different departments coming together, working toward one goal is rewarding. Vickie DeMarco, telecommunications coordinator, Information Systems, said, Seeing the team s ideas implemented is fulfilling. Antoinette Hopkins, payroll clerk, a new member, expressed that the greatest advantage she has received from her membership is meeting and making new friends while learning more about their job responsibilities and their departments/units. Larry Banahasky, aide, Environmental Services stated he contributes to the team by giving a perspective that is unique to his position, making known to the team his observations with regard to safety. The team feels that they make a difference and see tangible results. A few of the projects implemented by the Safety team include defining the cross-walk, implementing placement of hand rails, addressing safety issues of the gravel parking lot, promoting employee participation in receiving the flu shot, assisting with Joint Commission surveys, rounding regularly to ensure that Team MVH is aware of safety concerns and implementations, and acknowledging departments that meet MVH standards of safety. The safety team might be your path on the journey to excellence. Continue to watch for more team interviews to determine which team is the team for you. ComStat Team It's amazing what can happen just by paying attention. THE MAGIC OF A HANDSHAKE You re standing in line at Wal-Mart. Like a lot of people who want to get through a checkout line, your thoughts are on speed, nothing more. The line you re standing in isn't moving as quickly as you want and you glance toward the cashier. He is an older gentleman and you think to yourself, Well, he's an old guy and it probably takes him a little longer to get things done. For the next few minutes you watch him; greeting each customer before scanning the items they are purchasing, as you check your watch. Then it s your turn and the cashier greets you. Sure, his words are the usual, "How's it going?" But he does something different he actually listens to you. Then he responds to what you say, engaging in a brief conversation. Is this something you believe to be odd? Then maybe this would seem stranger the cashier places your change in his left hand, walks around the counter to you and extends his right hand in an act of friendship. As your hands meet, the elderly cashier looks you in the eyes and says, I sure want to thank you for shopping here today. You have a great day. Bye-bye." Imagine the look on the face of your patients; being touched by such a simple gesture. Imagine the reaction a hug could make. With this sort of care, they would likely, gather their things and walk out the door, smiling. The positive reaction of your patient for the kindness you show may actually help to brighten your day as well, so you can say, I love my job. Always remember to treat each patient like family. Next issue s deadline: Wednesday, May 28, at noon. Send submissions to whurley@monvalleyhospital.com. Remove by Monday, June 2.
3 Child Abuse and Mandated Reporters IMPORTANT The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has amended two (2) House Bills and three (3) Senate Bills which address Child Abuse and Mandatory Reporting. Those are House Bill 431, House Bill 436, Senate Bill 21, Senate Bill 29, and Senate Bill 33. If you are a licensed, certified or registered Caregiver you fall within the definitions of Mandated Reporter. Commencing January 1, 2015 anyone seeking new licensure or renewing a license, registration or certification will need to secure three (3) hours of training on Child Abuse and Mandated Reporting in order to renew. Every two years after, you will need two hours of training to renew. The Law further stipulates that the training must be an approved program with the Department of Public Welfare. Currently there are only two approved programs for Pennsylvania. Those are with the Academy of Pediatrics and the Pennsylvania Family Support Alliance. We are all responsible for maintaining our licenses, certifications and registrations as a part of our employment. In an effort to help you to meet this new requirement we will be coordinating programs that provide the mandated training. Registration for these programs will be available through NetLearning, but space is limited. We suggest those whose licenses expire early in 2015 schedule first. We are obligated to follow the expectations of the program presenters. All classes scheduled will close three weeks prior to the scheduled sessions. This is to give the presenter time to order classroom materials for all of those registered. It is imperative to this process that if you register, you must attend. Failure to attend after registration will generate a cost to the hospital and forfeiture of our deposit. If you find you cannot attend, please get a replacement or let us know so that someone on the wait list may attend. If you decide not to attend any of the scheduled programs, you may secure your required credits through an online option offered by the Pennsylvania Family Support Alliance. There is a fee that you will need to pay on your own. The information for that option may be found at: This law also affects clergy, teachers, volunteers working with children, Pre-hospital and law enforcement. If your department routinely interfaces with any of these individuals and you would like to invite them to attend our scheduled programs, please contact me and we will schedule as space permits. In addition to the mandated training the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania amendments, updates were made to the levels of misdemeanor and felony charges for the failure of someone defined as a mandated reporter to report child abuse. This requirement, if not met, can affect your future licensure, certification and/or registration. The training will provide clarity on this topic. Also, the hospital policy for abuse is being revised. Please review this updated policy carefully since it also addresses changes to the law which now requires a written report within 48 hours of the notification call to Childline. You may contact Chris Baloh, director of Social Services, if you have questions related to the agency legal forms that are to be used for the written report. The first wave of classes will be offered from 9 a.m. noon on the following dates in the Education Conference Center: July 8 July 22 Sept. 4 Sept. 23 Note: You must attend the full session to get credit and you must be registered to attend. Paula Bassi, Department of Education, ext. 1275
