The three-day festival kicks off oday with 300 food and craft vendors et up in Bandstand and Fountain parks nd numerous events going on throughut downtown. Franklin Area Chamber of Commerce xecutive director Jodi Lewis said fesivities officially start today with the nnual apple pancake breakfast from 6.m. to noon at St. Patrick School. The apple pancake breakfast is a ighlight that really kicks off the vent, said Lewis. Lewis also noted a sprinkling of dditions to this year s events, and said estival-goers will enjoy a bit of old nd new with vendors and local musiians. Every year we re fortunate to have ew vendors come in. We have a lot of oung vendors this year, so it ll be fun o see how it all plays out, Lewis aid. Performers known from stints in A aste of Talent vocal competition and rom playing around town are set to ake the stages in Bandstand Park and n the food court area of Fountain ark. We are bringing back some regular olks that everyone looks forward to. We ry to stick to local folks because this is heir opportunity to shine, and we are lessed with local talent, said Lewis. One addition this year will be a perormance by Oil City-based band awyers, Guns and Money and the GM chorus from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday n the bandstand. Another new event on Saturday and unday will be Industrial Truck and rane s heavy equipment display at the Franklin s downtown parks are full of vendors selling clothing, jewelry, arts and crafts, and food of all kinds like these carmel apples that are a hot commody during Applefest. intersection of 13th and Liberty streets. Some well-loved events taking place Saturday will include the Applefest 5K Race for Any Pace at 10 a.m. on Liberty Street, the apple pie baking contest at the Barrow-Civic Theatre and the pie eating contest in front of the information gazebo. (Those contests) are a big deal, Lewis said. The annual antique and classic car cruise will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday along Liberty and 12th streets. One of the most celebrated attractions in Franklin, the cruise brings in hundreds of vintage vehicles and car enthusiasts from all over the country. Free T-shirts will be given to the first 100 people to register for the cruise, which is yet another addition this year, Lewis said. Despite the rainy weather forecast this weekend, Lewis said crowds are expected to fill the downtown area in order to enjoy the festivities and reunite with family and friends. Although there are no official counts, it has been estimated that tens of thousands of people turn out for the event each year, Lewis added. Everybody comes home for Applefest, she said. And, while the festival formally closes at 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, vendors and entertainment acts will keep it going throughout the night. The Barrow-Civic Theatre is holding showings of Willy Wonka over the weekend, and local musicians will set up shop in the parks. Applefest runs until 5 p.m. Sunday. Thousands of visitors are expected to encompass Franklin s downtown area this weekend as part of the city s annual Applefest celebration.

4 4 The Derrick./The News-Herald: Friday, Oct. 6, 2017 Dancers to perform at marker ceremony Event will mark history of Chief Cornplanter, eneca Nation of Indians Several free public ceremonies will be conducted hroughout Oil City commemorating the history of hief Cornplanter and the Seneca Nation of Indians on aturday, Oct. 14. The official dedication ceremony for a new blue and old state historical marker will be held at 11 a.m. inside the Days Inn Conference Center at 1 Seneca Street. Remarks will be provided by representatives of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, the Seneca Nation, City of Oil City and Oil Region Alliance. Following the indoor program, guests will step outside to the marker location for the official unveiling of the marker, which will be located north of the top of the slanted concrete walkway on the east side of Seneca Street connecting to Justus Park. In accordance with instructions from museum commission, the marker text will not be shown until the dedication date. Immediately after the unveiling, the public may move into Justus Park where the bandstand shell will be the site for a free outdoor performance by the Allegany River Dancers from the Seneca Nation. The group last visited Oil City when the Chief Cornplanter statue in Creekside Park was dedicated in Many of its members are descendants of Cornplanter. Because light refreshments will be provided at the marker ceremony, interested people are asked to notify the Oil Region Alliance of their planned attendance. 5 The Derrick./The News-Herald: Friday, Oct. 6, Tour de Brookville set for Oct. 14 Fall bicycle classic will follow a 26-mile route BROOKVILLE The second annul Tour de Brookville fall bicycle classic ill be start at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, t Brookville s Depot Street trailhead cross from Giant Eagle off Route 36 outh. The tour, held during the peak of fall oliage season, will follow the same 6-mile route as last year s inaugural vent with plenty of breaks planned. The vent is not a race. A sag wagon will follow and assist iders throughout the tour with energy ars, drinks and other supports. Each participant will also receive a ommemorative 2017 TDB logo they an attach to their favorite T-shirt or bike jersey. Riders will pedal the Depot St. Trail, connect to the Redbank Trail and travel 7.5 miles to the Summerville trailhead. The tour then goes on the road using a combination of flat terrain, rolling hills, gentle climbs and exhilarating descents. Those choosing not to ride the roads or do hills can stay on the Redbank Trail and head further west toward Heathville before heading back. All riders are due back to the trailhead in Brookville before 12:30 p.m. There will be a post-ride celebration in downtown Brookville shortly after 12:30 p.m. There is no cost or pre-registration necessary, however tax-deductible contributions to help toward future trail maintenance will be accepted, with checks made out to the Redbank Valley Trails Association. Pithole lantern tours PITHOLE Drake Well Museum and Park and the Friends of Drake Well will host the museum s biennial Pithole lantern tours on Saturday. The gates will open at 6 p.m. at the historic Pithole City, located at Pithole Road off Route 227 near Plumer. Admission is $10 for adults and $8 for youths 3 to 11. Tickets may be purchased in advance at Throughout the tour, visitors will meet petroleum history characters and listen to stories about historic Pithole City. Tours will begin at 6:30 p.m. and depart every 10 minutes. The evening s final tour will depart at 9:30 p.m. Tickets will be sold until the final tour is full. Tours will last approximately 1.5 hours and cover nearly one mile. Foxburg fall festival FOXBURG The Foxburg art, wine and food festival will celebrate its 14th year when the event takes place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. The festival will feature a variety of artisans and crafters offering hand-crafted items for sale. The festival includes a Chinese auction, 50/50 raffle, food vendors, children s activities and more. Music will be provided by the Richard Eustice Band from 2 to 4 p.m. and Mitchell Bell will entertain on guitar and vocals from 4 to 6 p.m. Free shuttle service is provided at the designated parking areas which are the Allegheny-Clarion Valley Elementary School and Allegheny-Clarion Valley Medical Center, both located on PA Route 58. First St., Oil City. The event, which begins the club s 121st season, includes a dinner followed by a program by Daniel Herbener. Those who wish to attend the program only may do so with no charge. The program begins at 7:15 p.m. Herbener, the club s 2014 scholarship winner, will perform piano music composed by Franz Schubert. More information about the event is available by calling Linda Wrhen at Program on southern California SLIPPERY ROCK Mike Fialkovich, president of Pennsylvania Society for Ornithology, will present a program on the natural features of southern California at 7 p.m. Monday at the Jennings Environmental Center. The program is part of the Bartramian Audubon Society monthly meetings. Fialkovich is also the bird reporting officer for Three Rivers Bird Club in Pittsburgh. From 234 feet below sea level at the Salton Sea to just over 8,000 feet above sea level in the San Bernardino Mountains, the Channel Islands and deserts, southern California has a remarkable variety of habitats and creatures that occupy them. Refreshments will be served after the talk. There is no admission fee for the program. This is one of Bartramian Audubon Society s regular monthly programs, but people do not need to be a member to attend. Barrow Theatre Institute workshops The Barrow Theatre Institute has scheduled two classes which begin Saturday, Oct. 14. A one-day make up F/X workshop for adults and those ages 15 years and older will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14. The Great Gatsby auditions MEADVILLE Meadville Community Theatre will hold auditions for The Great Gatsby from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, and from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21. Mulvihill will talk about his work as an ornitholoist. This includes observing and studying birds, anding snowy owls and wintering hummingbirds, nd studying and observing the spring migration of arblers. It also includes conducting citizen-science research n backyard bird survival, tracking breeding birds rom their nesting grounds to their wintering grounds nd back again, monitoring the migrations of northrn saw-whet owls through an urban landscape and ore. Mulvihill credits his mother s casual backyard bird eeding hobby for his early interest in bird watching. is family had a cabin near Powdermill Nature eserve, where at the age of 14 he met its founder, obert C. Leberman, for the first time. Both Bobs ulvihil and Leberman became and have remained lose friends and colleagues for more than 40 years. Mulvihill received his bachelor s degree in education from the University of Pittsburgh in 1980 and became a full-time bander and education specialist at Powdermill in He earned an master s degree in biology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in In 2011, Mulvihill joined the staff of the National Aviary. He has conducted long-term field research on several bird species and authored more than 30 peer-reviewed scientific articles, edited volumes on the conservation of Pennsylvania birds, written dozens of popular articles about birds and nature, and given hundreds of talks about birds and bird- banding research throughout the United States, as well as Mexico, the United Kingdom, and Canada. In 2013, Mulvihill brought Neighborhood Nestwatch, a citizen-science project developed by the Smithsonian Institution, to backyard bird-lovers in the greater Pittsburgh area.
