The festival ontinues through Sunday, Oct. 8. The festival has seen as high as 00,000 people throughout the nine days, ccording to Tracy Becker, executive irection of the Clarion Area Chamber of usiness and Industry. Becker said the numbers are accumuated from data provided by PennDOT and he Pennsylvania Great Outdoors region. She said she did expect more Clarion niversity participation as the college elebrates 150 years. The festival s theme reflects the miletone and is Leaves of Blue and Gold: elebrating Clarion University s 150th nniversary. Becker said it is very popular for eople to have class reunions during the estival and that it held true for all chools not just the college. People are coming back because it is omecoming, she said. She added that several area hotels ere already booked and that she was orking on reaching out to other areas to elp out-of-towners find lodging. Becker said that as the festival has rown the first weekend is building up to e just as packed with events as the secnd weekend. In fact, the Miss Junior Teen and Miss een ALF scholarship program which ad formerly been scheduled for the first eekend to help enhance the schedule as moved to Monday for this year, ccording to Becker. The scholarship program will be held t 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Clarion Area igh School auditorium. Cost is $12 and ore information is available by calling 814) Another event that has expanded over he years is Saturday s kick-off concert. The concert featuring Legends and ix String Soldiers will start at 5:30 p.m. aturday at the Clarion Mall. The winner f this year s Franklin s Taste of Talent auren Skelley will also perform some atriotic songs. Under the direction of Zachary Covington, Stu Estes and Paulette Colantonio, the choir will present sacred and secular choral works which highlight some of the choir s favorite numbers from previous concerts. The concert will be a delightful presentation, and a great kick off to the Autumn Leaf Festival week, concert organizers said.. The choir will be accompanied by Mary Brooks. The program includes titles such as Bye, Bye Blackbird, Deep River, Blue Tango, Memory and What A Wonderful World. this year, Becker said. It s one of my favorite parts of the festival. The event started with one act and this year it features three, she added. During the event there will be a special recognition of veterans, according to Becker. Skelley will sing patriotic songs as the veterans are recognized, she said. Several state officials are scheduled to participate in the veterans presentations. Becker was also excited about the Six-String Soldiers who are part of the United States Army Field Band. She said some of the band s members had performed in Clarion before when the group was dubbed the Volunteers. But since then the band has lost some members while adding new ones. They were amazing, Becker said. She added that the cap on the night s events would be fireworks provided by a New Castle company. Becker expressed gratitude that four businesses stepped forward to pay for the fireworks. And it s free, Becker said of the kick-off event. She said people may purchase food and drinks if they wish and added that those attending should take lawn chairs The concert also features soloist Lauren Skelley, choir member and winner of Franklin s 2017 Taste of Talent competition. The concert is free and open to the public. A freewill offering will be collected following the performance. The Clarion Community Choir was founded in Singers include volunteers from Clarion and the surrounding areas. Other events happening earlier on Saturday include a 5K and 10K race, a touch-a-truck event, a kids carnival, The PA State Old Time Fiddler s Contest, a Power Wheels derby, a cornhole tournament and more. Becker said one of the biggest festival draws is Farmers and Crafters Day. That s what we get the most calls on, she said. More than 300 crafters and vendors will be set up on Main Street in Clarion from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6. It just amazes me... it s just a sea of people, you can t see the roads, Becker said. The second biggest draw is the Tournament of Leaves Parade, according to the chamber director. As of last week, there were 129 parade units signed up, but Becker still had to hear back from several participants. The parade will begin at noon Saturday, Oct. 7. The third highest attendance day would be the car show, she said. The car show will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday from Second to Eighth Avenue on Main Street. Everybody loves car shows, Becker said. However, she added that it would depend on who you asked as to the most popular festival events. She said that some of the younger festival attendees preferences include the amusement rides, the kiddies parade, the kids carnival and the touch-a-truck event. Becker also expressed enthusiasm for some of the merchandise for this year s festival. Some of the newer items include Yankee Candle candles, hand-stamped jewelry and Clarion-opoly. The items are available at the chamber office, but there will be a trailer in front of the courthouse during the festival. Becker was happy that the festival continues to thrive and added that it will mark its 65th year next year. She said that at a time when some towns were discontinuing celebrations due to economic factors, it was nice to see that the Autumn Leaf Festival continues to draw crowds and showcase Clarion County and the region. We have a lot to be proud of here in western Pennsylvania, Becker said. She expressed pride and gratitude for all those involved in putting on the festival. We would not be able to do this without the support of the board of directors, 45-plus sponsors, chamber staff, volunteers and committee chairs, she said. I m thankful each and every day for them, Becker said. I m blessed to be able to do this event and be surrounded by people who support this event.
