4 EVENTS AND WORKSHOPS VALENTINES FOR VETERANS Instructor, Darlene Clevenger All ages are invited to participate! 1 Saturday January 28 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. NO COST OPEN TO THE PUBLIC NO REGISTRATION REQUIRED Create Valentines for our military veterans, while learning a variety of artistic techniques. In memory of Mary Ruth White who originated the project, all materials and hot chocolate will be provided by the White family and the Buchanan Art Center. Participants are encouraged to bring in names and addresses of specific veterans if they like. We will send all the remaining Valentines to a VA hospital. This workshop is a great family activity appropriate for children, moms, dads, aunts, uncles and grandparents. Please join us! The Buchanan Art Center strives to enlist the power of the arts to promote positive social change. We provide a place in our community that nurtures the arts through quality art classes, workshops, and events that spark creativity and invite participation from people of all ages. We present gallery exhibits to showcase the works of area artists, and a gift shop for local artists to sell their work and gain recognition. A PLANNED GIFT to our endowment at the Michigan Gateway Community Foundation will provide the Buchanan Art Center with perpetual financial support. Please register for one specific two-date session (A, B, C, D, or E). Make bowls on the first day, glaze bowls at the second session. Meet our clay teaching staff in our studio, try your hand at pottery, and help feed the hungry in the Buchanan area. Create a clay bowl with the assistance of our experienced instructors on your first visit and return to glaze your bowl on the second date. After it is fired, your bowl will be donated to the 22 nd Annual Buchanan Empty Bowls Soup Supper scheduled for Friday, April 21, Alternatively, you may choose to pre-purchase YOUR bowl which includes a Soup Supper ticket, and pick up YOUR bowl at the event. Tickets cost: Child - $3; Adult - $5. All profits will be donated to the food pantry of Redbud Area Ministries (RAM) in Buchanan. Participation may provide the requirements for a Scout clay or service badge. If interested, troop leaders should sign their groups up as soon as possible.

Students will pinch, coil, and slab hand-built projects that encourage creativity. Students will get a chance to try the potter s wheel and learn how to decorate and glaze their pottery. Experienced students may pursue their own projects under the guidance of the instructor. In this class, students will use a number of painting techniques, materials, and brush techniques to record their winter observations in art. Using books, they will see how famous artists through the ages interpreted the winter season. They will discuss color theory and use the primary colors of red, blue, and yellow to mix the muted colors of winter, and paint on a variety of surfaces, including canvas, paper, and wood. They will also construct 3-D winter inspired sculptures. If a child did participate in Part 1, their experience in Part 2 will be different and employ different techniques and projects.

Class work will include color studies that help an artist understand the unique properties of primary, secondary, and complimentary colors. Experiment with various applications; and discover affects achieved by the understanding of hues, values, and intensities. The goal of the class is to give the student a greater sense of comfort and familiarity with all the colors. CLASSICAL FOUNDATIONS IN PAINTING AND MIXED MEDIA instructor, Sharron Ott Bartemio, Type 39 Certification, B.F.A. There were principles taught which provided a strong foundation that the artist could build upon to develop their unique style. In today s art world having an understanding of those classical concepts, such as: rules of composition, and how to shade, allows the student to grow. This class teaches structured techniques during the first four weeks. After which, students may choose their own direction, and with the teachers guidance, find their personal voice for self-expression. The class will use Acrylic Paints, graphite, and other compatible mediums. Students should bring the supplies listed, others will be provided.

In each class, Dori will show how she approaches a subject using watercolor. She will demo and assist each artist as they move through their painting. Throughout the term, you will attempt a still life, a landscape, and an animal, using different techniques and styles. Each student will be able to work at their own pace and skill level. FLOWERS AND BIRDS FOLK BRUSH STROKE PAINTING Instructor, Olga Orlovska-Soaltys, artist Adults and Teens (limit 5 students) 1 Saturday March 4 10:30 a.m. 3:30 p.m. registration required by Friday, February 24 $66 member -- $88 nonmember art supplies included Petrykivka painting originated from about the 18th century as wall painting. Feel the traditions of this Ukrainian folk painting and use it to create your own unique work. Get familiar with basic elements of this painting style: a grain, comb, berries, and runner. Learn combining them into pictorial flowers bunches of viburnum, leaflets. Make, with your own hands, a hearty piece of work filled up with love. Cost of class includes all supplies. Student will take home all paints, brushes and paper. Students should bring a jar for water, plastic palette and brown bag lunch.

You just need to start creating. In this workshop series, learn easy techniques that will allow you to use everyday items to make decorative paper AND turn a variety of ordinary papers into works of art! 1. Paste Paper Wed. CALLIGRAPHY, INTRODUCTION TO THE BROAD EDGE PEN Instructor, Angie West Adults and Teens (limit 10 students) 4 Thursdays February 9, 16, 23, March 2 6:30 p.m. 9:00 p.m. registration required by Saturday, February 4 $82 member $110 nonmember all materials provided Learn how to use a broad edge pen to make beautiful letters. Start with a pencil to learn the basic strokes for a Roman or foundational hand then go to the broad edge pen for both lower case and capital forms with a 6mm parallel pen, and finish with a play night of traditional broad edge tools. The broad edge pen and pad of grid paper will be provided.

10 METAL SILVER SOLDERING 101 Instructor, Marge Collins Adults only (limit 6 students) 4 Tuesdays January 10, 17, 24, 31 9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. registration required by Saturday, January 7 $75 member $100 nonmember supply list provided on request supplies available for purchase from instructor on class days* Learn to make a basic finger ring, a bezel setting (to hold a cabochon), and practice other types of soldered joins. As time allows, you may make another project. Learn how to calculate ring and bezel sizes, as well as simple through more complicated soldering (brazing), sawing, filing, polishing and other processes as needed. A choice of metals will be available at cost.* Tools including simple propane torches (not acetylene) will be available for use during class. An assortment of cabochons (priced from $2 - $20), will be available for purchase along with information about other sources. Students may bring their own metals, tools, and cabochons. Size of cabochons should be discussed before beginning a project. *Cost of metal varies depending what is used and size of project chosen. All projects may be completed for $10.00 minimum if copper and brass is used. If sterling silver is used, cost may exceed $30. GLASS INTRODUCTION TO FUSED GLASS Instructors, Susan Griffin and Marie Hodge Adults and Teens (limit 8 students) 1 Saturday March 11 10:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. registration required by Wednesday, March 8 $40 member $55 nonmember all materials provided Learn about the art of fusing glass. Learn what tools are used and how to use them. Be introduced to kiln firing and learn how the process works. Cut, layer, and adhere glass to make jewelry, magnets and other small pieces of glass art. The pieces will then be fired in a glass kiln at the BAC. Student work will be available for pick up on Tuesday March 14 during normal business hours.

11 BEGINNER STAINED GLASS Instructor, Susan Griffin Adults Only (limit 6 students) 1 Saturday March 18 10:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m. registration required by Wednesday, March 15 $40 member $55 nonmember all materials provided Create a stained glass sun catcher (Cross, Star or Butterfly) from start to finish. A sample of each piece is on display at the center to view prior to class. Learn to cut and grind glass shapes, copper tape glass, and solder pieces together to create your own special work or art. Please take into account that you will be using a hot soldering iron. With the skills taught in this class, you may leave with the knowledge, and ability to make your own pieces at home. PHOTOGRAPHY INTERMEDIATE DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY Instructor, Vasilisa (Lisa) Kiselevich Adults and Teens (limit 5 students) Prerequisite: Participation in Fall 2016 Photography class at the Buchanan Art Center or permission of the instructor 3 Saturdays January 7, 14, 21 10:30 a.m. 1:00 p.m. registration required by Wednesday January 4 $50 member $67 nonmember student must bring a camera (cell phone camera is ok) Build on what was learned in the Fall session: essence of an image, composition, and use of light, as well as manual adjustments, such as aperture, shutter speed and ISO. Weather permitting, students will practice all of these aspects on photo walks in local nature preserves. They will also learn some post-processing techniques, and exhibit their best photos in Buchanan Art Center.

TUESDAY AND THURSDAY AFTERNOOON POTTERY CLASSES are designed for hand building and wheel students of all experience levels. Learn imaginative hand building techniques and how to throw on the potter s wheel. Or, challenge your existing skills and consider how to combine the two approaches to clay. Work may be functional or nonfunctional. Explore the unique properties of clay, the aesthetics of form, lids, spouts, decorating techniques, glaze application, glaze mixing, and the loading and firing of kilns. Bring an apron and change of shoes. Notebook is provided to first-time BAC pottery students. Set of tools available in class for $15 (tax included). *Please read supervised extra clay studio time schedule/guidelines.

A set of tools is available to purchase in class for $15 (sales tax included). *Clay class enrollment includes up to 24 hours of Supervised Extra Studio Time in accordance with the guidelines. *A BENEFIT FOR CURRENT BAC CLAY CLASS MEMBERS ONLY SUPERVISED EXTRA CLAY STUDIO TIME, facilitated by BAC clay staff 8 passes, each for up to 3 consecutive hours of clay studio time, are included with class enrollment as noted in listing! adults and teens (limit 8 students in the studio at any given time) No signup required. Attend any combination of dates listed, up to 8 visits. The BAC clay studio will be open for extra time only to students who regularly attend a currently running pottery class. The studio will be supervised by facilitators who are not there to instruct, but to answer questions about studio policies and proper use of equipment and materials. Students will work independently and should responsibly observe all posted studio policies. Students may not use the studio at any other time except to attend class, briefly check on, or pick up work. Each registered student may attend Facilitated Open Studio a maximum of 8 visits, regardless of the length of their stay. 14 BUCHANAN ART CENTER 2017 REGISTRATION POLICIES PLEASE REGISTER EARLY! FULL PAYMENT OF CLASS FEE IS REQUIRED AT REGISTRATION. register/pay by mail with check -or- during regular bac open hours by phone with credit card in-person with cash, check or credit card. TEACHERS CANNOT ACCEPT WALK-IN STUDENTS. Please do not bring unregistered, non-paying visitors to class without the invitation of the instructor. We welcome visitors to observe some activity classes, with prior permission, but not to participate without proper registration. Classes that do not meet minimum enrollment two weekdays before the first meeting, or after any stated enrollment cutoff date, will be canceled. If a class is canceled, the Buchanan Art Center will notify anyone enrolled and refund registration payment. Once canceled, a class will not be reopened in the current education session. Late registrations will be accepted ONLY if the class has not already been canceled (or filled) AND if the instructor has sufficient time to plan for additional supplies and work stations. The Buchanan Art Center reserves the right to alter the descriptions and/or contents of classes if the need arises. There will be no refunds after the first meeting of the class. Member fees reflect a discount on tuition only. The Buchanan Art Center will be closed if Buchanan Community Schools close due to the weather. PLEASE CALL the BAC at when in doubt about closings. makeup classes will be held if a class is canceled due to weather or instructor illness/emergency. There is no discount on fees for materials. Non-members may join prior to or upon registration. Please use the separate membership form to join or renew BAC membership. Materials lists for classes that require students to provide their own supplies should be obtained upon registration, but may be previewed on request.
