2 Junior School The Glassell Junior School is an art school for young people, devoted to nurturing creativity and dedicated to fostering an appreciation of the arts and an awareness of the world. Classes and workshops for children ages 3 through 18 are offered year-round. Housed in a wing of the MFAH Central Administration Building at 5100 Montrose Boulevard, the Junior School has a covered, drop-off door at the corner of Bayard and Bartlett streets (entrance on Berthea). Children explore color and texture, experimenting with materials such as nontoxic paint and clay. They gain experience in handling scissors and glue, and they work with shapes including circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles. Adults learn a variety of ways to introduce art to their children and gain confidence in working with art materials. Drawing fundamentals are reviewed, and students build and stretch their own canvases. A museum visit is planned. Wednesday 4:00 5:15 p.m. O Farrell J548-1 Designed for students with a strong background in drawing and design. This class challenges students to explore creative thinking. Guided by the instructor, they complete specific assignments in an innovative way. Students may choose their materials, and they have the opportunity to work independently and to discuss their ideas. Saturday 1:00 3:00 p.m. Mittag/Celeghin J532-1 Students learn the principles of traditional cel animation, Flash animation, and computer-graphic animation. The course focuses on creating an individual Flash animation. Students also draw their own storyboards and design characters. Sunday 2:00 4:00 p.m. Celeghin J552-1 Explore the diverse and growing world of narrative image making. Images that tell stories can be anything from storyboards to illustrations and graphic novels. Students combine stories with the flexibility of art to reinterpret storytelling. Technical skill and intellectual exploration come together in the finished works. This class also shows how to draw and illustrate a variety of fashion figures, and how to create both functional pieces and pieces designed for display. Projects include animal masks and portraits of favorite pets. Sunday (March 6, 13, 27, April 3) 2:00 4:00 p.m. Staff JW2-1 Tuition $55 Lab Fee $10 (covers both adult and child) Discovery Adult/Child Workshop (Ages 4 6) 4 sessions During the first session, participants tour several MFAH galleries and the museum s Cullen Sculpture Garden. In the classroom, projects that relate to the museum visit include painting, working with clay, and creating a collage. Sunday (March 6, 13) 2:00 4:00 p.m. Calderon Tuition $40 Lab Fee $10 JW3-1 Edible Art Child Workshop (Ages 10 12) 2 sessions Students create 3-D art with pastillage, a sugar-based dough that professional chefs use for making and decorating showpiece work. Pastillage can be kneaded, rolled, pressed, and colored much like clay. During the first session, students work out designs and craft the pieces. At the second session, students assemble their work and display it in the classroom. Sunday (February 6, 13, 20, 27) 2:00 4:00 p.m. Tuition $65 Lab Fee $10 Foreman JW4-1 Explore how the movie industry and World War II influenced fashions of the 1940s era. Students will design and draw a collection of clothing based on this decade. Please note: This workshop is a drawing class only. History of Fashion: The 1940s Teen Workshop (Ages 14 18) 4 sessions 52 Frequently Asked Questions What should my child wear to art class? Comfortable clothes that can get messy. What are the behavior expectations? Students are expected to listen; to follow instructions; to participate in class activities; to respect others; to respect property; and to have fun! Does the Junior School provide before-class or after-class supervision? No. Children may be dropped off no earlier than 15 minutes before their scheduled class time and must be picked up promptly after class. May I register my gifted child for an older age group? No. Age requirements are strictly enforced and are not negotiable. All children must be registered in their correct age groups. 53 Can I leave my child at the drop-off door at class time? Can I pick my child up there? Not if your child is registered for a class in the 4 6 age group. All children ages 4 6 must be dropped off and picked up at the classroom each class meeting. Children in all other age groups may utilize the covered drop-off door at the corner of Bayard and Bartlett streets (entrance on Berthea). Please refer to the map on the back cover. Does the Junior School have change for the vending machine? No. Please send change with your child for the vending machines. Money is not kept at the front desk. May I leave my child s medication to be administered during class? No. Junior School faculty and staff do not administer medication. Parents may visit their children at any time during class to administer necessary medications.
8 Junior School Registration Guidelines and Policies Please read this section carefully before registering. No exceptions to these policies! Age Requirements Registration Procedure The Junior School at the Glassell School of Art ( School ) is a part of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston ( MFAH ), and as such complies with all policies and procedures from the MFAH, as appropriate, for the proper administration and management of the School. The School reserves the right to amend, add, and delete policies and regulations, as necessary, as well as the right to change programs, dates, personnel, and fees noted in this schedule. Age requirements are not negotiable and are strictly enforced for each class. There are no exceptions. Enrollment in after-school and weekend classes is open to all children who are 4 years of age or older at the time of registration. Enrollment in multiple Saturday classes with more than a 15-minute time gap is permitted only in the age group. The Junior School does not provide supervision between classes. Registration forms must be filled out completely and must include a parent/guardian signature in the box at the top of the form. Pay close attention to course numbers when filling out your registration form. The School is not responsible for incorrect information submitted on registration forms. Registration forms cannot be processed without complete information and full payment. After a course is filled, no additional students will be accepted. Class size is limited in every class, in all age groups. The School reserves the right to cancel courses that are undersubscribed and to determine the point at which a course is considered to be full. If a class is full when your registration arrives, you will be notified immediately at the phone number you provided. Otherwise, please allow 10 business days to receive a written confirmation in the mail. Enrollment cannot be confirmed until your registration is processed. Submitting Your Form Cancellations, Changes, and Refunds Drop-off Policy Registrations are accepted by mail, fax, or in person during Junior School business hours. Registration forms must be mailed to the P. O. Box address shown on the form. The post office will not deliver mail to the street address. Registrations are processed in the order they are received, on a first-come, first-served basis. All students are encouraged to register early. You may fax your registration form, complete with credit card payment, to Faxes are accepted only during Junior School business hours. If you fax your registration, DO NOT mail the hard copy. Faxing AND mailing the registration form may result in duplicate charges to your credit card. Do not fax your form multiple times because this may also result in duplicate charges to your credit card. The School is not responsible for faxed or mailed registrations not received. Only written requests for cancellations and changes are accepted. Written notification can be ed to pperez@mfah.org or faxed to during Junior School business hours. Changes are not permitted after the second class meeting. A 70% refund is given for class and workshop cancellations if written notice is received 10 business days prior to the first class meeting. Without 10 business days written notice, total tuition is forfeited. Registrations that are received less than 10 business days prior to the first class meeting are considered final and are nonrefundable. No refunds are issued for no-shows. No check refunds are processed until all classes have met twice. The refund information is processed and sent to the MFAH accounting department. Approximately 10 days to 2 weeks after the paperwork is transferred, refund checks are mailed. All children attending classes in the 4 6 age group must be escorted to and from the classroom by their parent/guardian for each class meeting and will not be released to a young sibling. Children attending classes in the 6 8 age group and older may be dropped off no more than 15 minutes early at the covered door located near the corner of Bayard and Bartlett streets (entrance on Berthea). 9 Registration Guidelines and Policies continued Pickup Policy Every Junior School student must be picked up by a parent or authorized caregiver no later than 15 minutes after the student s class ends. Neither the School nor its staff can be held responsible for students who are not picked up within this 15-minute window. Any child who remains on the campus more than 15 minutes after class ends will be unsupervised until a parent or authorized caregiver arrives. Students must be picked up at the covered door near the corner of Bayard and Bartlett streets. Students are not allowed to walk through the parking lot without a parent or guardian. In the event that you have a personal emergency and are unable to arrive on time, you must call the Junior School office at Discipline/Dismissal The School reserves the right to remove students from classes for behavior that is deemed to be rude, disruptive, inappropriate, dangerous, or in violation of school health and safety regulations. Individual instructors maintain the right to dismiss a student from a class with a warning, and to remove a student permanently from a class for repeated offenses. In the event of subsequent behavior problems, the student will be dismissed from the School with no refund and no access to further programming. Students may also be dismissed for nonpayment of any tuition or fees. Illness Medications and Food Allergies Use of Facilities In order to protect the health of all, the School prohibits students from attending class when ill with a communicable disease or condition such as chicken pox, the flu, head lice, pink eye, or strep throat. The School reserves the right to notify parents/guardians regarding any student who becomes ill during class and to request that said student be picked up immediately. The School also reserves the right to request a physician s authorization for return to class. Junior School faculty and staff do not administer medications to children. Parents may visit their children at any time during class to administer necessary medications. In regard to severe food allergies: The Junior School does not provide food for children and does not monitor what other children bring for lunch or snacks. Regarding allergies to peanuts and other types of nuts specifically: At Schoolsponsored events where refreshments are provided by the School, the School strives to maintain an environment free of these foods. The School facilities are for use only by registered students. Outside visitors, including former students, are not permitted to use any of the facilities or equipment under any circumstances. Visitors are not permitted in classrooms. Inclement Weather In the event of inclement weather, the School makes every effort to announce class cancellations as quickly as possible. In general, the Junior School follows weather closures as posted by the Houston Independent School District. Information regarding Junior School class cancellations will be available in a recorded message at , at the MFAH website ( and posted at the School when possible. If a class is canceled due to inclement weather, there are no refunds or make-ups. Discounts Only registered participants may attend classes. Siblings and guests are not allowed in the classroom.
