1 Welcome This year will be Downtown Racine Corporation s 15th year of Community Art! For each of the past fourteen years, DRC has announced a new community art project. But this year, because of the huge success of last year s community art project, and because we can definitely use more banners in Downtown Racine, and more importantly because there is much more to show about Racine, we are continuing the Celebrate Racine Campaign. Once again we are looking for depictions of art representing Racine County. Special consideration will be given to those works that show historic innovation, a recognition of events and people that helped make our community the great place it is today. We are thinking about people, products and places as they were in days gone by. Why Community Art Community art creates attachment to one s community! Cities gain value through community art cultural, social and economic value. It reflects and reveals our society, adds meaning to our cities and uniqueness to our communities. Community art provides an intersection between past, present and future, between disciplines, and between ideas. And, it s free. There are no tickets. People don t have to dress up. It can be viewed alone or in groups. Community art is open to everyone, and again this year will be available 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. The Project - Celebrate Racine This year s community art project is a civic beautification initiative that strives to engage community members, showcase the beauty of the region, and highlight local and regional artists. Up to 50 original works will be selected. Those selected works will be enlarged and reproduced on light pole banners. The banners will be installed on the light poles throughout downtown from June to October, The banner collection from 2015 will be re-exhibited throughout downtown as well. Your friends, family and all of the visitors to downtown will be able to admire your work for the entire summer. The original selected submissions will also be featured in a gallery exhibition during the summer. Sponsors and guests of the Preview Party in June will be given the opportunity to purchase the selected original artworks. The original works not sold at the Preview Party will be sold during an exhibition in July. Proceeds from the sale will be used to support the Downtown Racine Corporation s ability to deliver quality services, energetic community events and enhance the community s vitality and economic growth. Call for Artists Using the theme Celebrate Racine, artists are invited to submit two dimensional entries from the following visual art categories:

2 Appropriate content: Landmarks Architecture History Traditions Innovations Attractions Landscapes People Events Call for Artists (Continued) All works submitted must be original (no reproductions), not done under supervision, not made from kits or patterns. All submissions must have a finished size of 15 wide x 30 deep in a portrait orientation. All submissions must be suitable for framing and permanent display. If the appropriate medium is canvas, the canvas must be stretched and fastened to a wooden frame. If the appropriate medium is paper, the paper should be a high quality, non-acid, cotton based paper. Submissions on paper must also be mounted on archival (acid-free) mounting board. Entries in the Digital Art category must be submitted on canvas. The Schedule Call for Artists February 5, 2016 Deadline for Receiving Entries April 4, 2016 Jury Results ed & Announced April 18, 2016 Artist and Sponsor Preview Party June 4, 2016 (Subject to Change) Exhibit Opens June 7, 2016 Exhibit Closes September 30, Community Art The Rules A contestant may submit up to 3 entries. Up to 50 submissions will be selected for the exhibition Celebrate Racine. The Downtown Racine Corporation will retain sole ownership of the selected submissions. Selected submissions may be used on all collateral including, but not limited to: maps, programs, postcards, flyers, merchandise, social media, website etc. The artist will be properly acknowledged any time his/her work is being used. Selected designs will be chosen by a panel of volunteer judges from the community. A $100 stipend will be awarded for each selected submission. Finished artwork size must be 15 wide x 30 deep in a portrait orientation. Original artwork must be submitted. No photographs of artwork will be accepted. Entries in the Digital Art category (which includes photography) must be submitted on canvas. If your artwork is selected as a winning submission, the artwork will be professionally digitized (unless the submission is a Digital Art entry) in order for it to be resized and created into a light pole banner. Since the reproduced art is going to be viewed from a distance, artists are encouraged to use bright, dynamic and vivid colors in their works. A suggested color palette is included within this packet. Gradients and shades of these colors are also permitted. The jury reserves the right to deny entry if any work is deemed not suitable for display or too difficult to reproduce.

3 Additional Digital Art Specifications In addition to submitting a printed and mounted entry, artists submitting digital works must also submit the entry in a digital file. Artists may either submit a thumb drive or upload the file to Dropbox. Digital illustrations are recommended to be created in vector format. Minimum image resolution should be 300ppi at 15 wide by 30 deep. Submissions that do not meet this image resolution may be disqualified because they cannot be successfully enlarged to meet the banner production requirements. Acceptable digital art formats include: Illustrator Al, EPS and PDF formats; Photoshop JPG, TIF and PSD formats. Jurying Process and Awards The jurors will select the artworks to be shown in the exhibition from the works submitted. Work which does not meet expectations of the Downtown Racine Corporation may be withheld from the exhibition at the jurors discretion. The jurors have the sole responsibility for the selection of the artworks with no exceptions Community Art Awards First Place - $2,000 Second Place - $1,000 Third Place - $500. Important Information When creating your visual artwork, you will be submitting a design that will be enlarged and reproduced on both sides of a light pole banner. See the image on the next page. Please note: This document provides all the information required to successfully submit your contest entry. Due to the anticipated volume of contest entries, submissions that do not conform to the minimum requirements detailed in this document may be disqualified. Artwork damaged due to improper packaging is the fault of the participant. Artwork not picked up by June 24, 2016 will be considered a donation to DRC. In addition to the $100 stipend for selected entries, Prize Money will be awarded to the top three pieces chosen by the jury from the selected entries.
