1 Press Release Newark Arts Alliance Dennis Lawson, Executive Director (302) NEWARK ARTS ALLIANCE ANNOUNCES WINTER/SPRING 2014 CLASSES Newark, DE (January 16, 2014) The Newark Arts Alliance (NAA) is pleased to announce our Winter/Spring 2014 Class Schedule, which includes art and writing classes for adults, teens, and children. To register for classes at the NAA: Call us at or visit during regular hours, or mail your completed form to the Newark Arts Alliance, 276 E. Main St., Suite 102, Newark, DE Please register at least one week before class begins. Classes are held at the NAA and taught by professionals. Class prices are reduced for NAA Members. (Prices are listed as M for Members and NM for Non-Members.) Class brochure / registration form available at: Adults and Teens The Artist s Way Support Group (FREE) Second and Fourth Tuesdays of each month beginning January 28, ending April 8, 7:00 p.m. 9:00 p.m. Using Julia Cameron s book The Artist s Way, the group will work through exercises aimed at confronting blocks to creativity. Please purchase the book before the first meeting. FREE, but please pre-register by contacting the Newark Arts Alliance. Facilitated by NAA member Mary Moody. Making Memoir 3 Mondays (Feb 3, 10, 17), 7:00 p.m. 9:00 p.m. Ages 18+. $45 M/$50 NM. Students will learn about the rules and expectations of the genre of memoir writing and participate in hands-on exercises to begin writing their memoirs. During the third session, students will share their work with the group. Taught by Ramona Long. Mosaic Workshop 3 Saturdays (Feb 8, 15, 22), 1:00 p.m. 5:00 p.m. Ages 14 adult. $125 M/$135 NM. Get addicted to this fun medium, especially for those with a creative urge who may be fearful of more traditional art forms. We ll use the direct method of gluing whole and nipped glass and ceramic tiles to a wood mirror frame (10 x 10 ). We ll tint our grout to suit our

2 designs and learn how to apply and remove it. Finishing techniques will also be covered. Fee includes all materials and a tile nipper to keep. Taught by Terry Foreman. Drawing in Red One Tuesday (Feb 18), 6:30 p.m. 8:30 p.m. Ages 14 adult. $35 M/$40 NM. Students will explore pen and ink techniques to create value and contrast by drawing with contour lines, cross hatching, parallel lines, stippling, and other techniques, all using only red ink. Taught by Sherry Rader. (And be sure to check out the NAA exhibition Mad About Red in February!) Writers Workshop (FREE) Third Thursday of February, March, and April, 7:00 p.m. 9:00 p.m. Ages 18 adult. Open to writers of all genres (fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, drama, etc.). We will offer praise and constructive criticism for each other s work. Participants will submit manuscripts (max length: 15 pages of prose or 5 individual poems) at least two weeks before each meeting so the group leader can share them with the rest of the group. Depending on the level of interest, the workshop will continue in the summer and fall sessions. FREE, but please pre-register by contacting the Newark Arts Alliance. Facilitated by NAA Executive Director Dennis Lawson. Open Forum Drawing/Painting 5 Wednesdays (Feb 26, Mar 5, 12, 19, 26), 6:30 p.m. 8:30 p.m. Ages 14 adult. $95 M/$105 NM. This course is for beginner and intermediate artists who would like to develop a personal body of work. Students will develop fundamental drawing/painting skills and techniques using various media, gain working knowledge of elements of art and principles of design, expand their creative thinking, and learn to make deliberate creative choices. High school students, this is the perfect course for your college portfolio preparation! Taught by Jennifer Polillo. Make Abstract Art 5 Mondays (Mar 17, 24, 31, Apr 7, 14), 6:30 p.m. 8:30 p.m. Ages 14 adult. $95 M/$105 NM. Students will explore the possibilities of abstract art through contemporary and formal painting applications using oil or acrylic paints. Abstract art will be used as a way to visually represent events, emotions, objects, places and actions. Students will complete 3-5 paintings. Materials list provided upon request. Middle Eastern Rhythms for Everyone One Friday (Apr 4), 7:00 p.m. 9:00 p.m. Ages 12 adult. $20 M/$25 NM. Students will bring to class a drum or other small acoustic instrument; some drums will be available to borrow. Learn to recognize and play basic Middle Eastern rhythms, such as Baladi, Chiftitelli, and Malfuf, which can be used in drum circles and Middle Eastern belly dance events. Taught by Rebecca Sullivan (aka Lorelei).

3 Girls Art Night Out (GANO)! A unique opportunity to gather with women, create art, and enjoy wine, cheese, and conversation a grown-up playgroup for women ages 21 and over. GANO Blacklight Bellydance One Friday (Jan 31), 7:30 p.m. 9:00 p.m. $20M/$25NM. Highlight the movements of Middle Eastern Dance with florescent fabric or paint. Wear any comfortable clothing, especially if it glows under black light. No experience necessary. Taught by Rebecca Sullivan (aka Lorelei). GANO Dream, Prayer, Wish Infused Beads One Friday (Feb 21), 7:30 p.m. 10:00 p.m. $30M/$35NM. This month we will create our own rolled paper dream/prayer/wish infused beads. Then we will accent them with beads and create a unique piece of jewelry. No experience necessary. Taught by Carol Maurer. GANO SoulCollage Cards One Friday (Mar 21), 7:30 p.m. 10:00 p.m. $30M/$35NM. Create your own Sugar Scrub, Beeswax Lip Balm, and Essential Oil Bath Salts, packaged and labeled to make great gifts for your friends, family, or yourself. You will receive the recipes so you can make more at home. No experience necessary. Taught by Carol Maurer. For Kids Makin a Splash! 4 Saturdays (Feb 22, Mar 1, 8, 15), 10:30 a.m. Noon. Ages $60 M/$70 NM. Students will explore the wonderful world of water-based paints. Each class will be devoted to a new and exciting project including printmaking and wax resist paintings, as well as a variety of experimental techniques. This course is a wonderful way to ignite the creativity in your little artist. Wear old clothes and shoes. Taught by Jennifer Polillo. Fun with Painting One Friday (Mar 7), 6:00 p.m. 7:30 p.m. Ages $35 M/ $40 NM. Students will view and imitate different styles and ways of painting, including using brushes and found objects. This class is open to everyone, but it also meets the Girl Scout Brownie Painting Badge requirements. Taught by Sherry Rader.

4 Book Artist Fun One Tuesday (Mar 18), 6:00 p.m. 7:30 p.m. Ages $35 M/$40 NM. Students will learn the parts that make up a book and make one-of-a-kind art books using a variety of materials. This class is open to everyone, but it also meets the Girl Scout Cadette Book Artist Badge requirements. Taught by Sherry Rader. Fun with Drawing One Thursday (Apr 3), 6:00 p.m. 7:30 p.m. Ages $35 M/$40 NM. Students will learn some great drawing techniques, such as how to show perspective and the best way to use shading, using a variety of drawing tools. Have fun creating your own personal logo! This class is open to everyone, but it also meets the Girl Scout Junior Drawing Badge requirements. Taught by Sherry Rader. Wildflower Art One Sunday (Apr 13), 2:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m. Ages $20 M/$25 NM. Students will use a workbook provided by the teacher to learn how to find and identify wildflowers, then how to sketch and color them. Taught by Frances Phaneuf. Free and Facilitated Programs Music Jam. First Sunday of each month, 12:30 p.m. 3:00 p.m. No better way to start your week. Bring an instrument, sing along, or just come to watch. FREE and open to the public. Open Mic Poetry / Prose / Performance. First Tuesday of each month, 7:00 p. m. 9:00 p.m. Writers of all literary stripes are welcome. Join us at the mic, or simply come to hear local writers and support the arts. FREE ($5 suggested donation) and open to the public. Figure Drawing with Live Models. Second Thursday of each month, 7:00 p.m. 9:00 p.m. Artists bring their own supplies for a chance to work from a live model. No instruction provided. FREE for NAA members and $5 for nonmembers, plus participants split the cost of model (typically $40). Drum Circle. Fourth Friday of each month, 7:00 p.m. 8:30 p.m. B ring or borrow a percussion instrument and help us make joyful sound. FREE and open to the public. Painting Group. Paint in the NAA s classroom area during a couple weekday mornings each month. Schedule varies. Contact NAA member Pamela Skwish at if interested in joining the group. FREE and open to the public.
