When the National Honor Society at St. Joseph Academy were brainstorming a fund raiser to help the homeless in our community, they came up with the idea of a pancake breakfast. This was their first ever pancake breakfast fund raiser, so it was natural for them to turn to the West Park Kiwanis for help. St. Joseph s has long been the venue for our pancake breakfasts and it is a good partnership. Club President Marilyn Valentino visited the school and provided first hand advice on how to set up and run the fund raiser. In addition to their consultation, $200 was donated to assist with their expenses and a number of Kiwanians will be volunteering at the event. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Homeless Coalition. Their pancake breakfast is on the Saturday before our pancake breakfast! 3 Recent Events and Activites 2013 Kick Off Spaghetti Dinner a Grand Success! A long time community favorite, the recent West Park Kiwanis Spaghetti Dinner was held on Saturday, February 23 at West Park United Church of Christ. Many favorable comments were received on the repast greatly enjoyed by all! In addition to the pasta, guests enjoyed salad, rolls & butter, a nice selection of deserts, and beverages. Many Kudos to our hard working chef s, President Marilyn Valentino and local resident Rick Murphy. Many Kiwanians volunteered for the evening. Les Ackerman was in the serving line, Gabe Dery cut up cards for the Raffle Board, Joe Outlaw staffed the ticket desk, and Cliff La Rocque filled in all around. Special thanks to Marlene Arcuri, a long time supporter who oversaw the kitchen operation and kept it running like a well oiled machine! Also assisting in the event were members of the Kiwanis Westlake Aktion Club and Riverside Builders Club. The evening included a drawing for a door prize worth over $100 consisting of fine oils and seasoning by The Olive and the Grape, one of Kamm s Corners destination retailers, and a gift certificate donated by West Park Massotherapy. The Raffle was won by West Park Kiwanis member Jason Salupo s Aunt! After expenses, $1,200 was raised for our Community Fund! President Marilyn Valentino and Rick Murphy. A packed hall of happy pasta consumers! Cliff La Rocque & Jason Salupo Marlene Arcuri Riverside Builders Club Joe Outlaw loves handling the cash! Gabe Dery cuts the cards for the raffle. This was our second Zumbathon in partnership with the YMCA and it doubled the first events proceeds - over $300 was raised that was split with the Y! The Kiwanis proceeds were donated to the Kiwanis International Neo-Natal Tetanus drive to eliminate this disease that kills one baby every nine minutes. For every $1.80 raised a life is saved! West Park Kiwanis Make Member Joe Outlaw March for Babies! The West Park Kiwanis was pleased to donate $100 in support of our member Joe Outlaw s participation in the 2013 March of Dimes March for Babies. Joe is a long time Star Trek fan and is currently Captain of the local fan club chapter, the starship USS Challenger. West Park Kiwanis President Marilyn Valentino is the ship s Chief Medical Officer! They meet on the first Saturday of the month at 10 a.m. at Savor the Moment Coffee Shop on Rocky River Drive. The fan organization, with chapters all around the globe, is dedicated to the principles exemplified in the Start Trek universe, bringing diverse people and cultures together in harmony and peace.
