2 Equipment Helps Spiff Up Campus Streets, Lots: Showing off a new street sweeper in use on the COD campus is Octavio Vasquez, Groundkeeper, sitting behind one of the dual-control steering wheels that enable an operator to sweep curbs from either side of the vehicle. Right, Vasquez with Bill Fine, Supervisor of Maintenance and Grounds. The equipment's been in place for four months and has made a big difference. The old sweeper was obsolete and a crew had been sweeping streets and lots by hand weekly, a task that consumed about 40 staff hours. The new equipment does the job in a single day. The Timco Street Sweeper was paid for by redevelopment funds, so no money was used from the general fund nor from bond funds. The unit sweeps and vacuums and uses filters to cut dust and air pollution. Water is used as a wetting agent and applied as sweeping takes place. M & O is looking at other ways to upgrade campus maintenance, including a smaller mechanized sweeper that that could be used on sidewalks and patios throughout the campus. Last Insider Until After Spring Break: The Insider newsletter will return the week of April 17, after taking a week off for Spring Break April Next week's edition is postponed because the editor will be away at a CCPRO conference, where COD is to receive an award in the annual General Excellence competition among California Community College marketing pros. 7 recently been invited back to the MTV show, Making the Band 3, to join an all female group of singers and dancers that hopes to rise to the top in the televised competition. 8 New Artwork on Library Wall: On display on the Garrow Gallery Wall at the COD Library is the work of Barbara Nelson, who uses acrylic paints to explore memory, dream and "the pleasure of color." The artist is inspired by the canyons, arroyos, mountains and mesas of Southern Utah and loves the subtle colors on the cliff walls that create a serene atmosphere, which she captures in her work. 'La Boheme,' Other Works, To Be Performed on Campus: The Opera Workshop Performance will be Apr. 30. The free concert, featuring selections from La Boheme, Don Giovanni, and Suor Angelica, will be held in the Pollock Theatre at 2 p.m. This is a Social Science and Arts Division production. For more information call ext 'Twice Sold Tales' Huge Success, Friends Report: A greatly rewarding book sale sponsored by Friends of College of the Desert Library (FOTL) was held last week on campus. "Buyers came from the coast and everywhere and were excited by the books displayed in the Community Room, said Millie Bird of the FOTL. "As a result of the fine book collection, we were over the top in the largest amount of funds raised for books for the COD Library. Attendance was high and buyers went out with large loads of books. People from the Street Fair found us easily from the big new signs and special green flyers. They kept the Sidewalk Sale busy both Saturday and Sunday. "As our flyer stated we had wonderful books, especially the antiquarian and desert books. We expect to have more of these for the next sale in March "It's time now to thank all of the people who have helped us with this best-ever book sale. The Maintenance Department, Steve Renew, Bill Fine, Jose Alvarez, who help us all year
9 deserve our gratitude. Others are: the library staff, Charles Flores, Donna Wells, Rosa Limon, Gene Marchu, Dr. Bugay, Carolyn Acord and the International Students, Tom Wixon, Robin Cotton, and all others who participated in the sale. Thank you all." Look for the FOTL Mini-Book Sale in November and watch for the next 'Twice Sold Tales' in mid-march next year. Book donations for the Friends are received at the Warehouse on campus weekdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, call the FOTL at President's Corner by Dr. Gari Browning V.P. Instruction Joint CSUSB-COD BSN degree: COD and CSUSB Palm Desert are planning to offer a joint bachelor s degree in nursing. COD will offer the lower division general education courses, and CSU will offer the nursing courses and other upper division requirements. This program will enable students to earn a BS in nursing in four years. COD classes will begin this summer. Program Allows Students to Earn AA Degree at EVC: To better serve students in the Eastern Valley, COD plans to begin an associate degree program at EVC this fall. Students who are prepared to take college-level English and math will be offered a two-year package of courses to enable them to complete an AA in liberal arts that will also satisfy the CSU transfer requirements. Prioritization and College Goals: Instructional divisions and Student Services programs are busy determining how they can improve what they do next year. They are writing objectives designed to achieve the college goals: Maximize Student Learning and Achievement Maintain Financial Stability Implement the Facilities Master Plan Enhance Shared Governance In order to provide a clearer path to achieving these goals, the president and vice presidents identified goals in their areas for each college goal. The deans and program coordinators further refined the faculty role in achieving college goals by setting goals with their divisions and programs. This year the prioritization process will consider more closely the potential of each objective for helping to accomplish a college goal. Our timeline for prioritizing is earlier and more compressed than before because we want the priority list to provide the foundation for the college budget. In order to do that, the prioritization of all college objectives must be complete by the first of May, well before the June deadline for the Board of Trustees to adopt the tentative budget. COD is applying best practices in planning while it awaits the completion of the Strategic
10 Educational Master Planning Process (SEMPP), which is in development. A committee of faculty and administrators, led by physics professor Dr. Doug MacIntire, is making excellent progress in designing this process. COD Sports Major Fencing Tournament Here: COD will host the Palm Desert Open, a Pacific Coast Section fencing tournament that will be held in Wright Gymnasium on Apr. 8 and 9 from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. The free event is open to the public is a women s and mixed foil/epee tournament. A successful road trip would leave the Roadrunners undefeated and on track for an 11th state championship dating back to COD is at home next week, hosting Saddleback on April 4 and Riverside on April 11. The Orange Empire conference Tournament is scheduled for April 18 and 20-22, followed by the Ojai Invitational, the SoCal Regionals and the State Tournament May Softball Team May Have to Settle for Second Place: COD women's Softball Coach Shel Wellins knew it would not be easy to repeat as Conference Champion after winning twice in 2003 and '04, and a pair of losses to league-leading Antelope Valley over the weekend now has the Roadrunners hoping for a shot at second place. Golfers Continue to Win: Coach Tony Manzoni's perennial champion golfers are in the thick of things again, having not lost a tournament all year in conference play. COD, winner of the conference title every year since 1988, won it all in 2004 and became State Champions. The team will be in Mt. San Jacinto this Saturday for a conference match that begins at 10 a.m. They'll host the COD Invitational April 6-7 at the Greg Norman and Gary Player courses at PGA West.
