Agenda Highlights Regular held January 21, 2014 at Edgewood Fine Arts Academy Recital Hall Board approves new band hall at Kennedy HS Trustees approved the Administration s recommendation that the design-build method will provide the best value to Edgewood ISD and authorized the Superintendent to prepare a request for qualifications and advertise for services required for the construction of a new band hall at Kennedy HS. The growth of the Kennedy Band program necessitates the construction of a new band hall adjacent to the main school building. This facility would incorporate large rehearsal rooms, large ensemble rooms, instrument/uniform storage, individual practice rooms, and restrooms. Teachers offices would allow for the instruction team to conduct rehearsals. Board Policy CV (Local) states that for construction projects that have been budgeted by the Board or have been otherwise authorized by the Board, the method by which the District will award a construction contract valued at $50,000 or more shall be by competitive bidding, unless otherwise ordered by Board resolution in accordance with applicable state purchasing requirements. Piano for Fine Arts Theatre approved The Board approved the purchase of a Steinway Piano for the Edgewood Fine Arts Theatre. A District committee met December 18 to discuss the purchase. The approved purchase is a Steinway Piano, Model D from the If the District considers a construction contract using a method other than competitive bidding, the District is required to select the method of procurement that provides the best value for the district. Administration believes that competitive bidding limits the District s ability to negotiate on the foregoing projects. For example, if the lowest responsible bidder is higher than the District s budget, the District cannot negotiate for a change in scope of work and price. In order to seek a lower price, the District would have to reject all bids, revise the construction documents, and re-bid the project - a costly and time-consuming process. The designbuild method, therefore, is considered the best value to the District. Under the design-build method, a single entity provides both the design and the construction services. School Health Advisory Council members approved for 2 years Trustees approved the recommendations for appointment to the School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) for a two-year term. The skit included items approved by the Board in recent months. The Education Code states that the board of trustees shall point at least five members to the local SHAC. A majority of the members must be persons who are parents of students enrolled in the district and who are not employed by the district. SHAC members are Mary Lou Campos, Las Palmas ES; H. 4 4 Board approves purchase of projectors, screens for all kindergarten to 2nd grade classrooms The Board approved the purchase of Epson projectors, mounts, screens, and installations for all kindergarten to 2nd grade classrooms. Consultants Stephanie Harvey, Dr. Julie Jackson bringing support to EISD teachers Trustees approved contracts with consultants Stephanie Harvey and Dr. Julie Jackson for ongoing professional development. Harvey will provide in-class support to language arts teachers at the elementary and middle schools and training for social studies teachers at Gus Garcia MS in reading strategies for expository text. Dr. Jackson will provide direct teacher support through professional development, lesson planning with interactive word walls, model lessons, and guidance in required STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Capstone projects. Harvey s services bring ongoing professional development for campus kindergarten to 8th grade literacy teams and administrators to study a specific aspect of literacy, delving deeply into content, and implementing new practices in their classrooms. Dr. Jackson supports Edgewood ISD science teachers at the elementary grade levels of 3rd through 5th grade, all middle school science teachers, and high school biology teachers. A few classrooms in secondary grades will receive a new projector so it can be compatible with an Apple TV. Teachers will be able to teach by walking around their classrooms using their ipad to demonstrate the lessons on the projector. Football stadium renamed Edgewood Veterans Stadium The Board approved a name change for Edgewood ISD s varsity football complex. Frank Mata Memorial Stadium and the Kennedy HS Field House are now called Edgewood Veterans Stadium. The name change was made in conformity with state law and District policy. School Board meeting all decked out The Fine Arts Academy Recital Hall was decorated for School Board Recognition Month. Don Nuñez, Dance Aide at the Fine Arts Academy, and Robert Ramos, Theatre Manager, created the illuminated banner displayed over the Board table (top photo). The bottom photo shows children s silhouettes and hearts created by Nuñez. The decorations were placed in front of the Board table. Additional services by Dr. Jackson include the support of Toltech T-STEM Academy in the completion of Capstone Project.

Approval of proclamation to recognize Career and Technical Education Month in Edgewood ISD during the month of February 2014: Career and technical education provides Americans with a school-to-careers connection and is the backbone of a strong, well-educated workforce. Career and technical education gives high school students experience in practical, meaningful applications of skills such as reading, writing and mathematics. Approval of proclamation to recognize National School Counseling Week in Edgewood ISD, February 3-7, 2014: School Counseling Week focuses public attention on the unique contribution of professional school counselors within U.S. school systems. The weeklong observance highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. Briefs Approval to purchase two 2014 Chevrolet Suburbans: The Board approved the purchase of two 2014 Chevrolet Suburbans. The District demand for school vehicles has increased and necessitates the need for the additional vehicles. All employees traveling on school business are required to travel in a school vehicle. Exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis. The additional Suburbans can accommodate groups of employees traveling to conferences, workshops and meetings. BOARD OF TRUSTEES Joseph M.
