2 2 School Health Advisory Council Every Independent School District is required by law to have a School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) of which the majority of members must be parents who are not employed by the school district. The SHAC is annually appointed by the local education agency Board of Trustees. All CSISD Administrators are invited to submit names to serve on SHAC. Required to meet four times, this group has met 7 times. Texas Education Code Title 2, Chapter 28, Section

3 3 What is a SHAC? The School Health Advisory Committee is a group of individuals representing segments of the community to provide advice to the district on coordinated school health programming and its impact on student health and learning. The SHAC will assist the district in ensuring that local community values are reflected in the district's health education instruction.

4 4 CSISD SHAC Mission Statement College Station ISD SHAC strives to improve health literacy by seeking to engage organizations, professionals, individuals, and families within the community.

5 5 What is Coordinated School Health? Coordinated School Health (CSH) is a systematic approach of advancing student academic performance by promoting, practicing, and coordinating school health education and services for the benefit and well-being of students in establishing health behaviors designed to last a lifetime.

9 9 Wellness Policy FFA The Wellness Policy FFA for College Station ISD lays out the requirements and recommendations for the District s SHAC in the following categories and sub-categories: 1. 11 11 Wellness Policy Key Points The SHAC shall develop a wellness plan to implement the District s nutrition guidelines and wellness goals. The wellness plan is required to address: 1. Strategies for soliciting involvement by and input from persons interested in the wellness plan and policy 2. Objectives, benchmarks, and activities for implementing the wellness goals (Continued)

The District s standards for foods and beverages provided, but not sold, to students during the school day on a school campus 5. The manner of communicating to the public applicable information about the District s wellness policy and plan

14 14 Goals for CSISD SHAC 1. Review the components of the Coordinated School Health Plan 2. Present an assessment instrument for the Wellness Plan to be evaluated 3. Continue the emphasis on Mental Health 4. Meet all new requirements/implementing of the Wellness Plan 5. Assess the Wellness Plan by the SHAC 6. Review the effectiveness of Quick Tips

Post the revised Wellness Plan on the District s web page for greater accessibility 4. Include the Wellness Plan into the Campus Improvement Plan increase campus involvement and require assessment of the Wellness Plan with the Evaluation Instrument

26 26 What s Next Utilize School Health Index in relation to the assessment of curriculum Assess the opportunities for administrators in the district to create a health committee to interact with the SHAC Enhance opportunities for the Wellness Plan and evaluation tool to be part of the Campus Improvement Plan for each CSISD campus Look at possible implementation of advanced Health Education courses in secondary schools

28 28 Evaluation SHAC Wellness Plan Evaluation tool is a survey designed for individuals from CSISD campuses to answer questions regarding each component in the Wellness Plan in regards to their respective campus. The purpose is to collect data which will be used to evaluate and improve the implementation of the Wellness Plan on each CSISD campus (Continued)
