3 Picking Songs with the Highest Na au Factor Leslie Wilcox PBS Hawaii President and CEO It was an historic gathering, 21 peers in the love of Hawaii music, arriving at PBS Hawaii on a Saturday morning last month to do what one participant, musician and educator Aaron Sal ā, felt was a bit beyond the capability of any one group of people. Entering our studio, they hailed a woman who was attending by way of Skype, her image projected on a screen. It was Amy Ku uleialoha Stillman, educated at Hawaii public schools and the University of Hawaii, with a Ph.D. in music from Harvard and a faculty position at the University of Michigan. As she waited for the meeting to begin, she was eating a bowl of poi, in Michigan! The goal of the day: to review long lists of Hawaii songs submitted by a larger group of music folks and winnow them to the 60 most memorable songs of Hawaii. These songs and their histories will soon be showcased on a PBS Hawaii website, for the public to peruse and vote on their 10 favorites from three different eras. PBS Hawaii will then ask leading entertainers to record the songs with the renowned Matt Catingub arranging the orchestral accompaniment. In this way, we ll present the people s choices in a 90-minute program. It s a collaboration with Honolulu Magazine, Hawaiian KINE Radio, and Hawaii News Now, whose three TV channels will simulcast the program with PBS Hawaii on Labor Day, September 2. It s a grand vision brought to us by one of our supporters, independent TV producer Dirk Fukushima to share the joy of Hawaii music throughout time, to educate and to entertain. Robert Pennybacker and Roy Kimura, top PBS Hawaii television producers, knew this would be a very sensitive and emotional discussion among people who are passionate and knowledgeable about Hawaii music. Former Royal Hawaiian Bandmaster Aaron Mahi started the day with a pule, or prayer, seeking wisdom. Facilitator Keola Donaghy, a song composer and music faculty member at the University of Hawaii Maui College, maintained the group s trust with even-handedness and a knack for pacing. Participants front-loaded their discussion with philosophical considerations: What makes a Hawaii song memorable? What should be their prime considerations? What are the eras of Hawaii music? I was struck by University of Hawaii music professor Ricardo Trimillos definition of what makes a Hawaii song great: the na au factor how it makes you feel in the gut. James Kimo Stone, President of the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame and Museum, made this point: This is not just music. In Hawaiian culture, these songs are our books. And then came the voting on song after song. Participants were respectful but didn t hold back. Some songs are like family, after all. There were strong emotional currents in the room. You ll have a chance to see and hear what was said, in a mini-documentary we re making about the special day. Singer Marlene Sai appreciated facilitator Donaghy s professional composure and compassionate warmth, as individuals unveiled experiences and expressed passionate personal mana o. Aaron Sal ā expressed thankfulness for hearing opinions on the topic from some of the most formidable personalities in the industry today. It was indeed a rare and weighty and fascinating conversation. Other participants in the day s discussion included John Berger, Tony Conjugacion, Jon de Mello, Ryan Gonzalez, Gaylord Holomalia, Jay Junker, Kainani Kahaunaele, Michael Keany, Lydia Ludin, Tom Moffatt, Harry B. Soria Jr., Chad Takatsugi, Doug Tolentino, Billy V and Byron Yasui. We ll let you know when our web pages are up, so that you can review all of the songs and cast your vote for the best 10! 4 Bringing the world to Hawaii, one ingredient at a time ood. Family. Heritage. The elements that are dear to Hawaii s culture also make the perfect recipe for Family Ingredients, a new one-hour pilot coming to the PBS Hawaii Presents block on Thursday, May 23 at 9:00 pm. Family Ingredients is an innovative show that blends food, travel and genealogy. It follows the origins of a featured guest s favorite meal and the family roots associated with it. It showcases Hawaii s multicultural communities, as well as the far-off lands of ancestors who brought their recipes to Hawaii. When people talk about cooking shows, people instantly think that we re cooking a dish in a kitchen, said Executive Producer Heather Haunani Giugni, creator of Family Ingredients. We are definitely following a dish, but it s so multi-layered. That s what makes it all so fun. That Japanese dish that everybody takes for granted, like raw egg on rice, is not as simple as it looks it has a huge history to it. One essential layer to the Family Ingredients project is the team behind it, said Giugni. Hawaii food activist and advertising consultant Dan Nakasone is the show s producer, while filmmaker Ty Sanga (Stones) directs. Ed Kenney, head chef at TOWN Restaurant in Kaimuki and a local sustainability champion, hosts the show. 5 Family Ingredients Thursday, May 23 9:00 pm familyingredients.com The pilot features another renowned Hawaii chef, Alan Wong. Through a family recipe, Wong traces his roots. The show begins in his hometown of Wahiawa, Oahu, where the oldest tofu manufacturer in the U.S., Honda Tofu Factory, is based. It s also the home of Petersons Upland Farm, a 100-year-old egg farm. Wong and Kenney travel to Japan, where Wong was born. They tour Tokyo s markets and farms, visit legendary sushi chef Jiro Ono s restaurant, then meet several organic farmers in Tokyo s rural outskirts. Much like the family businesses found in Wahiawa, they come across an organic farming couple in Japan who grow produce and raise chickens on a 400-year-old farm that s been passed down through the generations. Behind the Lens: Todd Fink PBS Hawaii s multimedia writer Liberty Peralta caught up with Todd Fink, camera operator on Family Ingredients and a PBS Hawaii crew member. Todd had just come back from his whirlwind trip to Japan to film the show s pilot episode. Liberty Peralta: How did the opportunity to work on Family Ingredients come about? Todd Fink: It was my connection with Ty Sanga, the director. I had worked with him before on other projects. He liked my work and brought me on board. LP: You just got back from filming the pilot episode in Japan. Any favorite places you visited? continued on page 6 >> The idea is to bring our communities together to have communities outside of Hawaii look at us as home, and for us to see those communities as home, as well, said Giugni. I think that this show will resonate across the country. Hawaiian Airlines, Pacific Islanders in Communications, HMSA and Matson are the sponsors of Family Ingredients. 6 On location with chefs Alan Wong (l) and Ed Kenney (c), camera operator Todd Fink captures a light moment in a busy kitchen. Photo: Renea C. Stewart continued from page 5 >> TF: Oh yeah, tons. We visited tons of little restaurants and farms. Jiro Ono s restaurant was obviously the big treat, just because of the documentary [Jiro Dreams of Sushi]. LP: Is there anything interesting or funny that stood out to you during this trip that you d want to share? TF: [laughs] Our accommodations were interesting. We were staying in a hotel when we were in Tokyo, but when we went to Saitama, which is more of a rural farmland kind of area, our contact over there had some different properties. One of the properties she had was a house that had been turned into a preschool. So we were staying at this house that was a preschool by day, so we would come at night and had our sleeping cots on the floor and all the guys were in this room. We d be woken up to preschool children making their way into the house. We usually did interviews in the morning, so we d be filming interviews in the house and preschoolers would be lining up outside, waiting to come in.they knew we were coming, so they made a giant poster for us that said it was kind of a combination between Japan and Hawaii, so it had like Konnichiwa and Aloha and palm trees. LP: Seeing preschool kids is nothing new for you, though, since PBS Hawaii is next door to one. TF: Oh yeah, exactly. It was very similar. Before we left in the morning, we would usually see them. Before we left for good, we left them another giant poster. We got some paper and some crayons and we drew some Japan/aloha stuff for them. We did a big mahalo for them. LP: Is there anything that hit you personally that you took away from this experience? TF: Oh, tons. I just got a new appreciation for organic food when I was over there. I went to Japan and tasted all this delicious food and went around to different farms and talked with different organic farmers. Then we ate sushi every day and had homemade soy sauce with homegrown rice and homegrown eggs and everything was locally produced and locally grown. LP: So has that affected what you eat now? TF: I think so. I think I might be a little more picky about what I m eating. I m paying more attention to labels and what I m eating and where it s coming from. LP: If Family Ingredients did an episode on you, what would your family-food story be? TF: [laughs] I m Middle America; I grew up in Colorado. My dad would cook and he would always make a meat, a starch and some kind of steamed vegetable. We just kept it very simple and very basic. As far as going back to the origins of those kinds of foods, like potatoes and vegetables and, you know, chicken and steak, I don t know if that would be worthy for this kind of show. [laughs] Then again, I was surprised that we were able to make a show out of Alan Wong s story we went back and discovered the origins of his meals growing up, which was rice, eggs and tofu. He grew up having very simple meals. I m sure it might be the same thing for me. What I thought was simple and not a whole lot to look into, I m sure he must have thought the same thing about rice and eggs and tofu, but we discovered there are so many layers underneath these very simple foods. There s a very complex story behind how rice is grown, how eggs make it from a chicken to our plates, and where tofu comes from and what kind of process that is to make it. LP: Your bio on the Family Ingredients website says that you already have this long list of experiences TF: I haven t read the website. LP: [laughs] You didn t write that bio? TF: Mm, no, I don t think so. LP: [laughs] It says that you ve already amassed all this experience in your 25 years of life so far. TF: Oh, okay. I m gonna look that up right now. LP: Is there anything else coming up that you would add to your long list of accomplishments? TF: Family Ingredients is going to be the big thing that s going to be on my reel now. This is definitely a show I m going to be proud of that I hope will continue on after this pilot episode. Todd Fink in action. Photo: Renea C. Stewart 6 May 2013 PBSHawaii.org

16 Eisenhower s Secret War Saturday, May 25 9:00 pm 2-Part Series Republican. Ike was a military man his entire life. And not your ordinary rank-and-file military man, but the greatest hero of World War ll a five-star general whose career goal in the nuclear age was to keep America secure from the continuing threats of communism. Eisenhower s Secret War examines Dwight D. Eisenhower s unwavering commitment both public and covert to peaceful co-existence with the USSR in the tumultuous and uneasy Cold War years. Based on recent research by established scholars and writers, the two-part documentary series provides a fresh understanding of how Eisenhower s national security policies and tactics kept a divided world at peace during the 1950s and in the ensuing decades. The first part, The Lure of the Presidency, chronicles the movement to draft Eisenhower then NATO commander in Europe as the Republican candidate for president in The second hour, Building Weapons, Talking Peace, recounts President Eisenhower s battles against the Soviet Union in the escalating arms race. Part 1 The Lure of the Presidency Dwight D. Eisenhower did not aspire to be a politician; in fact, most of his colleagues had no idea whether he was a Democrat or a Ike s proponents lauded him for his strategic skills, insightful thought process and courageous attitude. At a time when he could have begun enjoying retirement, he accepted the challenge of seeking the presidency because he knew that once in the Oval Office he could provide leadership for the free world in the battle versus communism and set a sane course for the use of nuclear weaponry. Part 2 Building Weapons, Talking Peace With both the United States and the USSR in a position to use nuclear weapons in any conflict, the possibility of mutually assured destruction was entirely feasible. To think that the world as we know it could have ended in the 1950s may sound farfetched, but it was in fact a reality for those controlling nuclear weapons at that time. Using his military experience, a knowledge of science and technology, and diplomatic sensitivity, President Eisenhower played his hidden hand wisely, successfully positioning the United States economically and militarily as the strongest country in the world. 16 May 2013 PBSHawaii.org

Executive Producer of Learning Initiatives Robert Pennybacker acknowledged PBS Hawaii President and CEO Leslie Wilcox, along with HIKI N Ō students Crystal Cebedo and Mahealani Nieto-Lopes (Waianae High School); teachers Luane Higuchi and Miki Kamimura (Waianae Intermediate); and teacher John Allen (Waianae High School). The crowd watched Cebedo s HIKI N Ō story about her late mother s battle with colon cancer, then heard from fourteen-year-old Cebedo herself, who spoke about the unique opportunities HIKI N Ō has afforded her and other students. She also recognized two very important people in her life father Willand Cebedo and brother Michael Escuin. In the past, HCF would give event attendees a parting gift. This year it broke tradition and instead presented Wilcox with a $1,000 check for HIKI N Ō. This month, at the PBS Annual Conference in Miami, Florida, PBS Hawaii and the two foundations were invited to present HIKI N Ō as a case study during a joint breakout session on community partnerships sponsored by the National Council for Media Engagement.
