It is hard to believe that we are about to start a new year! If you haven t had the opportunity to enjoy our services, I would like to invite you to come to the Library or visit our website at org this winter to experience all that we have to offer. We have wonderful books for all ages in every genre, movies, museum passes, and programs. Through our website you have access to our many online services from the comfort of your own home. I would like to thank all who contributed to the Toys for Tots program. This community s tremendous support and generosity make these drives incredibly successful. That support is what motivates us to work harder year after year to collect more toys to bring joy to families in need during this festive season. The Food for Fines drive was very successful as well. Thank you all for your contributions. We are committed to continuously provide excellent services to our community. We would like to inform you that we enhanced the lower level by adding computer carrels with charging stations. This area has become very popular and tremendously efficient for those who like to work quietly and independently. Also, we have added vending machines so patrons can enjoy a drink or snack. Please remember that if you download our Nassau Library App to your mobile devices, you can use your digital library card to have the Hicksville Public Library at your f ingertips at all times. Carlos Munozospina Hicksville Library Board President CHILDREN S PROGRAM TOWN OF OYSTER BAY MAGICAL MUSIC - JEDI TRAINING WITH DAVID ENGEL Saturday, January 27 at 2:00 p.m. A long time ago and not so very far away, children yearned to be Rebels. You are invited to learn the ways of the Jedi with Panniken Moonjumper, a true Master of Intergalactic fun and adventure. During this engaging program your little Jedi Warriors, Princesses and Darth Vaders will feel empowered to discover the great Force within their hearts. Family audiences will be wowed by comic antics, exciting physical challenges, magical mayhem, light saber lessons and a visit from our space hero s furry alien sidekick. THERE IS NO REGISTRATION FOR THIS PROGRAM. YOU CAN PICK UP A NUMBERED TICKET IN THE CHILDREN S ROOM 20 MINUTES BEFORE THE SHOW BEGINS.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is a volunteer-run tax assistance and preparation service available to low and middle income tax payers ($60,000 or less) with special focus on seniors. Those with all levels of experience, including beginners, and interests in all genres are welcome. MEDITATION Mondays, January 22 & February 12 at 7:00 p.m. in the Computer & Resource Center Join Linda Cafiero for a relaxing evening of self-discovery. Through the exploration of various meditation techniques, you ll find the path to your true nature and enjoy a more fulfilling life. Please bring a towel or mat. TRAVELOGUE: THE THREE MAJOR CITIES OF SWITZERLAND Tuesday, January 23 at 1:00 p.m. Savvy Sightseer Jeanne Schnupp take you on a tour of three of the country s main cities shows just how diverse this region is in heritage and culture. The largest city in Switzerland and one of the financial capitals of the world, Zurich is a mere 34 square miles - a great place for a walking tour! Bern, the country s capital, displays both its serious and playful sides. CURRENT EVENTS IN AMERICA TODAY Wednesday, January 31 & February 21 at 1:00 p.m. Jim Coll leads this monthly program with open discussions of political, legal, and social issues and raise awareness of current events in an Lectures & Workshops No registration is required for the following programs. 4 MOBILE LEGAL HELP CENTER SPONSORED BY SENATOR ELAINE PHILLIPS Thursday, February 8 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the parking lot The Mobile Legal Help Center, is a partnership between the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) and the New York State Office of Court Administration. NYLAG staff will be available to provide free legal assistance to local residents on issues related to domestic violence; family law; healthcare and disability benefits; housing (tenants only); identity theft and consumer credit issues; and advance planning. Individuals should bring with them any documentation related to their situation that may be useful to the NYLAG staff in providing assistance. Appointments are required. To make an appointment call Senator Phillips office at DEMENTIA 101 Tuesday, February 13 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. A representative from Parker Jewish Institute will discuss the signs, symptoms and warning signs of dementia. Treatment options and the importance of an early diagnosis will also be discussed. Caregivers will learn about the Willing Hearts, Helpful Hands Program and the free services available to them. Willing Hearts, Helpful Hands is a community service program of the Parker Jewish Institute for Health Care and Rehabilitation that recruits and trains volunteers to step in for the family caregivers of someone with Alzheimer s disease and dementia. Three stories intertwine in this suspense-filled saga set in New York, circa 1850, the year of the Fugitive Slave Act. Pursued by an unrelenting Bounty hunter, a quickwitted slave runs from the iron rule of a cold-hearted plantation owner. Her only hope: finding passage on the Underground Railroad. For their show, The Great Folk Rock Festival, Gathering Time pays and plays tribute to the great acts of the 60s and 70s that influenced their song writing and shaped their sound, performing songs by The Byrds, Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, the Mamas & the Papas, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, America, John Denver, Gordon Lightfoot, and many others, including, of course, Crosby, Stills & Nash! Art Exhibits COMMUNITY ROOM ART EXHIBITS Artwork is displayed in the Community Room and may be viewed when a program is not being held. February: The exhibit Memories in Pastel features works in Pastel & Watercolor by award-winning professional portrait artist, Patricia Boes as well as acrylic and mixed media works by Devin Boes and James Boes. LOBBY DISPLAY CASE January: St. Stephen s Nursery School displays student s crafts. February: Our Lady of Mercy will be displaying student s work.

Keep jewelry, candy, or coins in the basket. Great for a Valentine s Day gift or keep it for yourself. Please bring a photo of your favorite dog or cat. You don t have to own an animal to have a favorite. Photo can be on your phone. Class Size: 20 teens Fee: Free MINI SANDALS BRACELET Tuesday, February 20 at 7:15 p.m. Beat the winter blahs. Join Catherine Martin to create tiny sandals from polymer clay. The sandals will be attached to a chain bracelet. Each bracelet is completed with a little charm. Class Size: 20 teens Fee: Free CHERRY TREE BLOSSOM PAINTING ON GLASS Tuesday, February 27 at 7:15 p.m. Look forward to Spring by creating a lovely painting of a cherry blossom tree inside a glass picture frame with Doris Benter. Cherry blossom flowers come in so many pretty pastel shades: pink, blue, yellow, and white. CREATIVE ART Class: Thursdays, January 11 & 18 at 4:00 p.m. Using Do You Have a Hat by Eileen Spinelli as our inspiration Tina Geller will guide the children in creating a self-portrait. Please note time of class. This is a two week program. Ages: 5-8 Class: Thursdays, January 25 & February 1 at 4:00 p.m. Tina Geller will guide students through two different art experiences. We will print hearts in the style of Jim Dine. We will also collage heart animals. Please note time of class. Ages: STUDIO ART Class: Tuesdays, January 16 & 23 at 7:15 p.m. Join Tina Geller in hurrying winter along. Students will learn how to draw and paint a winter artwork of a BULLFINCH!
