Subject: American Red Cross/La Salle University Faculty/Staff Blood Donor Campaign Dear La Salle Employees: We have the advantage of living and working in a community that has a high concentration of hospitals with state-of-the-art technology, equipment and medical talent. As you know, an essential element for our hospitals to carry out their mission to provide quality health care is to have an adequate blood supply. Recently, the American Red Cross has experienced local and national shortages of blood. Critical deficits are occurring for some blood types. For example, as of June 22, 1994, the Red Cross in our area had the following blood supply inventory on hand: TYPE o+ A+ B+ AB+ O- A- B- AB- OPTIMAL ACTUAL OPTIMAL AM AMOUNTISWHATISNEDEDFORATHREDAYSUPLY HREF DAY SUPPLY An employee blood donor campaign is scheduled for: Thursday, July 14 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Dunleavy Room Your donation remains vitally important to area hospital patients. 9 BOOZE NEWS AOD Program Box 821 July, 1994 X-1355 SUMMER/HOLIDAY DRINKING? 1. Remember th a t drinking should not be the PRIMARY focus of any activity. Decide why you drink. A personal option is not to drink. If you don t want to drink, for whatever reason, simply say "No, thanks", or "I ll have something else instead". Expect others to respect your decision. If you are drinking, respect another person's right to abstain. 2. Remember th a t the right to drink is governed by laws controlling the minimum drinking age, drinking and driving, etc. Know the laws and obey them. 3. Set a limit on how many drinks you are going to have. Tell a friend your limit; then count your drinks and stick to it. 4. Set a time when you will leave the party and keep to th a t plan. 5. Don t drink on an empty stomach. Eat a substantial snack before you go out, such as sandwiches, pizza or cheese and crackers, etc. Snack on foods like bread sticks or popcorn while you re drinking. Remember, if the foods are salty, you may want to quench your th irs t with nonalcoholic drinks. 6. B e aware of how your current mood will react to alcohol -- drink when feeling well, not when you re "down". Ask yourself how alcohol is going to affect your body. Some effects are different for women. Remember the term "HALT" don t drink when you are Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired. 7. Avoid using alcohol in conjunction with other drugs (over the counter as well as prescription- for a list of alcohol/drug interactions call Robert a t X WHILE YOU ARE D R IN K IN G : 1. Don t gulp your drinks -- drink slowly stretch your liquor, not your mind. Aim for no more than one drink per hour. 2. Alternate between alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages (non-alcoholic beer is a good example). 3. Drink diluted drinks, but avoid carbonated mixers as this speeds-up the absorption of alcohol into the blood stream. 4. Always make and measure your own mixed drinks in order to control the type and amount of alcohol you consume. This way, you know what s in your drink. Avoid punches or unknown contents. 5. Always eat while drinking. (Starchy foods now, remember?) 6. Avoid encouraging or approving of irresponsible behavior caused by intoxication- drinking games, high risk behavior. 7. E3e aware of your own body and how it reacts to different drinks a t different times. Review how you feel before, during, and after drinking. 8. Stop drinking a t least one hour before you leave a party.
10 A fte r you've finished drinking: 1. Don t drive when under the influence and discourage other drinkers from driving. Don t be a passenger in a car driven by someone who is under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Arrange to go with a "designated driver" who chooses not to drink. (Don t forget to BE the designated driver once in a while!) 2. If you re in doubt about whether or not you re too drunk to drive, stay overnight or call a taxi it s cheaper than losing your license or maybe your life. University of Illinois Board of Trustees copyright AOD FILES AVAILABLE ON LAN For those with access to Administrative Computing s LAN, two new sub-directories have been established in the WordPerfect (WP) "N:" directory. These can be accessed by selecting the WP option on the LAN menu. Once into WP, make the following keystrokes: F5, enter; N:, enter. Scroll down to either "Alcohol" or "Drugs" and enter twice (enter, enter). You then will be presented with a large selection of files which you can browse, download, printout, etc. Should any file be printed and/or used with students, please cite the AOD Program and include its campus phone number ( ) in case additional information is desired. Please remember, new files will be added regularly as they are researched and prepared so check this often. Should you wish to ask about a particular drug or pose a specific question, please direct your inquiry to: Robert Chapman, Box Anonymous inquiries are welcomed. Responses will be posted in file form in either the "Alcohol" or "Drugs" sub-directory of the "N:" directory LETTER TO A FRIEND If you have a friend whose drinking creates a concern for you, consider the following (or a personally edited version): Dear?, I didn t know how else to tell you. But when we were together last time, I was really frightened. Everybody likes to have a good time. Me too. That s usually why I end up hanging around you. Most of the time we have fun together. Most of the time. But last time, you were really out of control. It was like you became another person. It had to be because of your drinking, there s no other explanation for your actions. All of a sudden, I didn t know who you were... Yes, I was frightened for me. For being in a situation I didn t really know how to handle. But I was more frightened for you. I wondered if you knew how to handle it. I m not saying you have a drinking problem. I m saying th a t you could have been hurt, or worse, hurt someone else th a t night. And maybe you ought to take a close look a t what you re doing so it doesn t happen again. I m not the only one who thinks these things. Maybe I m the only one who cares enough about you to say something. I care about you. I do. But you really scared me. An I thought you should know. PROGRAM MISSION STATEMENT Factual information about alcohol, other drugs, and their use and abuse is hard to come-by. As a result, myths, half-truths, misinformation and rumor often influence an individual s decisions about using alcohol and/or other drugs. La Salle University recognizes this fa c t and has developed an Alcohol and Other Drug Program. It is the mission of this program to provide accurate information about psychoactive substances, educate the La Salle community about the realities of alcohol and other drug use and provide referral and/or treatm ent for problems associated with abuse. For more information call: X-1355.
