3 Cam usnews La Salle University's Weekly Information Circular General News Page 2 "Ordering the Cosmos: Charles Willson Peale and the Philadelphia Museum" Robert McCracken P ~eck Senior Fellow at the Academy of Natural Sciences Thursday, April 8, :30 p.m. Dan Rodden Theatre at La Salle University In 1790, Charles Willson Peale announced to the citizens of the United States that he was prepared to open a museum of "objects of natural history and things useful and curious" which he hoped might one day be recognized as a cultural and scientific repository for the nation. It was to represent the culmination of a long and distinguished career in art and science that made Peale one of the most remarkably versatile figures of his age. Peale's Philadelphia Museum, which flourished well into the 19th century, raised questions and set standards for other American museums that are still applicable today. Using images of Peale's remarkable collections of paintings and artifacts, Robert McCracken Peck will discuss Peale's seminal contributions to American art and science and place his museum in its broader cultural, artistic and scientific context. This lecture is the Historic Germantown lu111chtime conversation offering for April. Cosponsored and funded by the Concert and Lecture Series, Fine Arts, American Studies, the Philadelphia Center, the Celebration of Science, and the La Salle At1 Museum. This program is part of Historic Germantown's Germantown WORKS, a year-long initiative highjighting the hard-working spirit of Germantown's people throughout its 300 years. The Germantown WORKS project has been supported by the Pew Center for At1s & Heritage through the Heritage Philadelphia Program.

Mancoff is Adjunct Professor of Art History at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Adjunct Lecturer in the Department of Museum Studies at the Art Institute of Chicago, and Scholar in Residence at the Newberry Library. She received her doctorate in Art History from Northwestern University. She has written books on nineteenth-century European and American art and culture, including Monet's Garden in Art, Van Gogh 's Fields and Flowers, Burne-Jones, Jane Morris: The Pre-Raphaelite Model of Beauty, Mary Cassatt: Reflections of Women's Lives, and Sunflowers. She is the author of Treasures From the Art Institute of Chicago (200 l ), Treasures of the Detroit Institute of Art, has contributed essays to many exhibition catalogues including Cameron's Women, and Other Masters: The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection, and Love Revealed: Simeon Solomon and the Pre-Raphaelites; she also serves as the nineteenth-century paintings advisor for the Encyclopedia Britannica. She is currently writing a book titled Fifty American Artists You Should Know, and her most recent book, Icons of Beauty in World Art, a two-volume inquiry into concepts of female beauty across time, will be published this autumn. We will examine the prison-industrial complex, consider the American ideal of justice for all and question the real meaning of justice as it applies to both victims and offenders within the context of both the adult and juvenile courts. 7 Page 6 Violence in Relationships: Working for Change presented by Dr. Raquel Kennedy-Bergen Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at 12:30 Dan Rodden Theater (Union) This talk is about the reality of sexual and physical violence in relationships among college students. The presentation addresses the prevalence of relationship violence, consequences, and risk factors. The focus will be on change and working to create a culture without relationship violence. Raquel Kennedy Bergen is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology at Saint Joseph s University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is the author or co-author of numerous scholarly publications and five books on violence against women. She has volunteered as an advocate for battered women and sexual assault survivors for the past 20 years.
