1 E K U E D U C A T I O N A L T A L E N T S E A R C H P R O G R A M Talent Search News DECEMBER 2016 Family Career Day The Educational Talent Search (ETS) Program celebrated its annual ETS Family Career Day on Saturday, November 5, 2016 with over 70 participants and family members in attendance. Hosted on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University (EKU), the morning interest sessions included: Financial Literacy and Career Planning. Andrew Abernathy, of Citizens Guaranty Bank, presented Financial Literacy. Career Opportunities was presented by Mandy Harrison, of EKU Career Services. Following the morning session, ETS treated participants to pizza and drinks. After lunch, participants had the opportunity to select items to take home from the Christian Appalachian Project Operation Sharing, which included free chips, crackers, cereal, protein bars, candy & soft drinks. Tickets for the EKU/Murray football game were provided to families, courtesy of the EKU Athletic Department. ETS Scholar, Kenton Step of Estill County was the winner of the Citizens Guaranty Bank (CGB) $25 Gift Card, presented by CGB Banker, Andrew Abernathy. Mandy Harrison of the EKU Career Services Office talks about the value of co-op, internships, and parttime work. ETS Participant Numbers & Recruitment As of December 6, 2016, 137 new middle school and high school participants have been accepted into the Educational Talent Search Program, since September 1st. This brings our participant count to 658. The program is funded to serve 765 participants, so recruitment will continue until all spaces are filled. (See more on page 2 about the participant s per county break-down). 2 ETS Participants by Target Area & Target Schools Target area means a geographic area that may be served by the Talent Search project, but the target area does not receive the focused services as that of a target school. Garrard and Madison counties are target areas for our grant. Target school means a school designated by the ETS grant and is the focus of project services. Estill, Jackson & Lee County middle schools and high schools are designated as target schools. At the present time we have 129 participants on the roster for the Garrard & Madison County target areas, but this number may change. Any participant (in the target areas) who is not making an effort to participate by the end of December, will be withdrawn to allow space for those interested in services. The target area participant numbers can reduce the number of participants required in the target schools. Talent Search is required to serve 765 participants. 3 County Accolades Congratulations to the Estill County High School Marching Band on their Division 2AA State Championship. We have many ETS Scholars who participate in the band. Congrats to Miss Mia Hale, Estill County Middle School high scoring basketball star who has scored over 1000 points. We are proud of ETS Scholar, Miss Hannah Ingram, the 2016 Miss Woolly Worm Festival Queen. Congratulations to the Lee County High School Volleyball Team for winning their 2016 District Championship. ETS Scholars help make up the team. Congratulations to the Madison Central High School Marching Band on winning the State Championship in their division. We are proud of our ETS Scholars. He responds to our posts by sharing important information so that more students can benefit. Thank you Mr. Chaney for your dedication and support. In addition, we would like to recognize Ms. Patsy Fike of Lee County, as an ETS TRIO Warrior. She is a grandmother to an ETS scholar. Ms. Fike has also been an avid follower of ETS on Facebook, and continues to share important information with others. Ms. Fike, thank you for all you do.
