Grounded in Tradition Committed to Excellence Message from the Superintendent Superintendent Phil Freeman We are anticipating another outstanding year in Lakeshore as we prepare to open the school year. Grounded in Tradition and Committed to Excellence, the outstanding staff in Lakeshore continue to work hard to deliver an engaging and inspiring education to our students in state-ofthe-art facilities. Last school year, we implemented five new programs to support these efforts. Programs Implemented: Young Five s Early Middle College Project Lead the Way (STEM education) at the middle school (grades 6 and 7) Machine Tooling and Teacher Cadets (CTE) AP Macro-Economics Each of these programs proved to be highly successful in supporting our students as they research and discover pathways on their journey to success. But we will not rest on our laurels. For the second summer in a row, several Lakeshore teachers attended Project Lead the Way training as we expand our STEM offerings in the middle school (to include 8th grade) and at the high school with new pathways in Engineering and Computer Sciences. Lakeshore High School will also implement a Certified Nurse s We are grateful for the financial support of the LAKESHORE EXCELLENCE FOUNDATION and for the efforts of the LEF all-volunteer board. Assistant (CNA) program to supplement our already broad spectrum of CTE courses. Enhanced reading support will be implemented at the elementary and middle school this fall, as well. As part of a three-year journey toward expanded and improved reading programs, several teachers attended the prestigious Teacher s CONTINUED PAGE Cleveland Ave., Stevensville, MI PH lakeshoreschools.k12.mi.us lefonline.org

College Summer Institutes in New York where they spent a week learning about the reading and writing workshop method of instruction with experts and educators from all over the world. Lakeshore will be implementing a daily 30-minute intervention/enrichment block of time in all three elementary schools during the school day so students and teachers can work in smaller groups to increase reading achievement based on individual needs. Similarly, our 6th and 7th grade students are scheduled for an additional reading class as part of their day where the focus will be on choice reading and strategies to help middle school kids become more motivated and avid readers. 3 Lakeshore Public Schools lakeshoreschools.k12.mi.us PH The 8TH Annual Adam Tilly Memorial Golf Outing On June 10 golfers gathered for an exceptional day at Lake Michigan Hills to play in memory of a former teammate, classmate, friend and son, Adam Tilly. Adam was a 2001 Lakeshore High School graduate. He was a strong athlete, starting for some great Lancer football squads. He threw shot-put and discus (and occasionally ran 400 s) and was team captain for a track team that won state. He excelled in the classroom and served two years on student council. Adam was a great individual on and off the field a selfless teammate who ALWAYS put the team s objectives above and beyond personal accolades. In April 2005, he graduated from Michigan Technological Lindsay Zavoral University with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. Adam was a recipient of the prestigious Thompson Scholarship, which is awarded to outstanding students in the university s civil engineering program. After graduation, he accepted a civil engineering position with Pearson Construction Co. Sadly in July of 2006, Adam s life was cut way too short by Melanoma cancer. In memory of Adam, Hans Koppenhoefer has organized this yearly golf outing for the past eight summers. Overwhelming support of this event is received from former teammates, friends, teachers, coaches, community leaders and family. This once small outing among friends has grown into much more. A 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, AT53 Inc. was founded in Adam s memory to award a yearly scholarship to an outstanding graduating Lakeshore High School senior. AT53 Inc. has proudly awarded $ in scholarships in the past four years. This year s recipient, Lindsay Zavoral will be attending Grand Valley State University in the fall to study occupational therapy. Lindsay represents the hardworking and compassionate traits of Adam Tilly. Best of Luck Lindsay! Adam is also remembered by his family s gift to the football program, a storage building on the side of the Lancer stadium. The building with the #53, Adam s three-year varsity football number! Overwhelming support of this event is received from former teammates, friends, teachers, coaches, community leaders and family. AT53 Inc. wishes to extend a special thank you to our generous hole sponsors, donors, volunteers, community leaders, families and friends. We are grateful for your support, and proud to represent such a fine young man. We could not do this without you! Elementary Teachers Attend the Teacher s College Reading & Writing Project at Columbia University 3rd Grade Roosevelt teacher Mrs. Kelli Mitchell at the Teacher s College. Every summer, Columbia University hosts educators from 40 different countries to participate in their Reading & Writing Project learning sessions. In the months of June and August, Lakeshore Public Schools was very proud to send a cohort of elementary teachers to these week-long, intensive workshops at the Teacher s College in New York City. The Reading & Writing Project receives hundreds of applications, so being chosen to attend was truly an honor for our staff members who did apply and were accepted. Teachers who attended had the opportunity to learn from Lucy Calkins, founder of the Reading & Writing Project at Columbia. Teachers and administrators in attendance were able to make meaningful connections with a small group of educators and interacted with them each day. The small groups maintained a skillful and targeted focus on learning and practicing reading and writing instructional strategies, reflecting, and planning for their upcoming instruction for kids. Additionally, each day included a choice of workshop sessions to attend, and every day ended with a keynote speaker! The teachers and administrators who attended would like to thank the Lakeshore Excellence Foundation for helping to make this opportunity come to life. We are hopeful to send another group of teachers next summer. The elementary buildings will all be focusing on Reading Workshop for the school year. Our staff will have the opportunity to work with an experienced staff developer who will be coming to our district to give ongoing professional development and coaching as we dig into the reading workshop model. We are looking forward to the significant impact that the reading workshop model will provide for our Lakeshore learners! 10

11 Lakeshore Elementary lakeshoreschools.k12.mi.us PH LAKESHORE LIGHT FIRST Lego League Robotics - A STEM Organization We are excited to announce that Hollywood, Roosevelt, and Stewart Elementary Schools have combined efforts to create two competitive FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Robotics Teams for fourth and fifth grade students. FLL is a program designed to get kids excited about science and technology. FIRST, which means For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, is a STEM organization with four levels of robotics programs beginning with FLL Jr. for second and third graders, FLL for fourth and fifth graders, FTC for sixth through eighth graders, and FRC for ninth through twelfth graders. Lakeshore currently has a competitive FTC team at the middle school and a competitive FRC team at the high school. Robotics reaches out to all grade levels. The 2017 FLL Challenge is titled HYDRO DYNAMICS but the FLL Challenge and Rules will not be released until August 29, when the FLL season officially begins. Since the FLL season starts a week before school, our teams have already been formed so that they can meet immediately once school is in session. Lakeshore currently has a competitive FTC team at the middle school and a competitive FRC team at the high school. The FLL Challenge will consist of three parts: (1) the Robot Game, (2) the Project, and (3) the FLL Core Values. For the Robot Game, students will design, build, program, and test autonomous robots to perform a series of missions. For the Project, students will research a real-world problem, create an innovative solution, and share their findings. At the heart of FLL are its eight Core Values, from which students learn about friendly competition and teamwork. An introduction to Robotics! There are hundreds of FLL Tournaments held throughout the state, across the country, and around the world beginning in November. Both of the Lakeshore FLL Robotics Teams will participate at the third annual Lancer-Bot Mania FLL Tournament hosted at Lakeshore High School on Saturday, November 11. At every FLL Tournament, teams will play the Robot Game with their robot to demonstrate how well their robot performs and also present their findings for the Project. In addition to those two components, teams will also be judged on their understanding of the FLL Core Values and their Robot Design. Learning about Robotics is fun. The Lakeshore Excellence Foundation supports STEM programs at Lakeshore Public Schools. See insert. 11

Inherent with this are the District s efforts to reduce pesticide use as much as possible. While it may occasionally be necessary to apply a pesticide, these will only be used as a last resort. This program does not rely on routine pesticide applications to resolve problems. We use various techniques such as habitat alteration, sanitation, mechanical means, exclusion, etc. to prevent pests from becoming a problem. You will receive advanced notice of the application of a pesticide, other than bait or gel formulations at your child s school. This advance notice of the application will be given 48 hours before the application. The law requires us to do this notification by using two methods. The first method required by the law is the posting at entrances to your child s school. The entrances that will be posted are the primary entrances to the building from the parking lot(s). The second method we are going to use is the posting in a common area located by the main office of the school. Parents are also entitled to receive this notice by first class United States mail postmarked at least three days before the application. If you would like to be notified by mail please contact the Business Office at the (269) Please give the Business Office secretary your name, mailing address, and what school your child attends. In an emergency (for example, bees nest), pesticides may be applied without prior notice, but if you desire you will be provided notice following any such application. You may review our IPM program or pesticide application records for your child s school by calling or ing Nick White, the District s Director of Operation and Maintenance, at phone number (269) or nwhite@lpslancer.net 19
