The Spartan Fund is the fund raising arm for Michigan State University Athletics. Every dollar raised is used to support the academic and athletic endeavors of over 800 student athletes. Currently, more than 7,500 loyal and dedicated alumni, friends, and fans support the Spartan Fund each year. The MSU Athletics Department is a self supported entity which receives no funding from the State of Michigan or from the University which is why membership to the Spartan Fund is critical to the success of Michigan State Athletics. Our Mission We invite the friends of Michigan State University to develop a lasting relationship with our Department of Athletics. In the fulfillment of that mission, we strive to clearly demonstrate our vision/plan for our department and encourage support of the various opportunities available to invest in the betterment of our student athletes. MSU Athletics Mission Statement We gather and engage our community to teach, support, and celebrate our student athletes in their quest for excellence. 2

What is the Representative Program? The Spartan Fund Representative Program is an extension of the Spartan Fund which reaches out to various communities around Michigan and the United States in an effort to help steward donors more efficiently. Why do we need the Representative Program? There are over 7,500 loyal Spartan Fund donors and supporters of Michigan State Athletics, while there are over 400,000 MSU alumni across the United States. Unfortunately the Spartan Fund is not able to reach out to all individual alumni and fans of Michigan State. The Spartan Fund representative program was implemented in an effort to utilize influential supporters of Michigan State Athletics in various communities around Michigan and across the United States. Between athletic scholarship as well as operation costs continuing to rise, volunteering for The Spartan Fund Representative Program is another way for a current member to give to the Spartan Fund. Through donated time and efforts of our Representatives, we hope to gain new members, and raise donations to support student athletes scholarship, travel and equipment costs, and quality head coaches. 7

What are the Goals of the Representative Program? To increase the visibility of the Spartan Fund in various communities around Michigan and the United States. To identify, organize, and engage alumni, supporters, and fans of MSU Athletics while increasing membership in the Spartan Fund. To increase philanthropic support of Michigan State Athletics through unrestricted gifts. Continue to support the mission of MSU Athletics. How Can I help achieve these Goals? Our student athletes know that with hard work, passion, and diligence that they can achieve set goals which will lead them to success. We extend this mindset to our volunteers in the Spartan Fund Representative Programs and encourage contact with at least ten (10) potential donors in your community. Through retention comes gain, and we would like our Representatives to maintain contact with members in their community. Hosting watch parties, game day tailgates, and other social events are a great way to identify potential Spartan Fund members, as well as talk with current members about your membership with the Spartan Fund. By reaching out to members of your community you are actively increasing the visibility MSU Athletics as well as increasing membership in the Spartan Fund. 11
Who can volunteer for the Representative Program? Any interested Spartan Fund member can volunteer to be part of the Representative Program. Being a volunteer Representative, it is expected that you will be a positive example of who a Spartan Fund donor should be, assist in broadening the visibility of the Spartan Fund, as well as increase membership in the Spartan Fund. Where can I find more information? On the web at and click on Representative Program. Call the Spartan Fund at E Mail the Spartan Fund at spartanfund@ath.msu.edu 12

Ways of Giving to the Spartan Fund The Spartan Fund operates on a fiscal year from July 1 through June 30. A gift made during this time period qualifies a donor to receive benefits beginning July 1 of the following fiscal year (please view the benefits chart on page 15). Unrestricted Giving The most influential way to support Spartan Athletics is by making an unrestricted annual gift to the Spartan Fund. These gifts give coaches and administrators flexibility to determine the best use of your financial support. Unrestricted giving touches all facets of our 25 sport athletic program, including scholarships, equipment, recruiting, team travel, academic support, athletic training and medical support, marching band, cheerleaders, dance team and general budget support. Unrestricted gifts are 100% tax deductible. Designated Giving Gifts may be designated to a specific sport or program (please see page 13 for a list of designation codes). All gifts to specific sports or programs are 100% tax deductible. Seat Related Giving Michigan State University athletic teams compete at the highest level intercollegiate athletics can offer. By purchasing premium seating, you can rest assured that your seats offer the best views and bring you closest to the action. All premium seating contributions count towards Spartan Fund membership and are 80% tax deductible. The purchase of season tickets is required in addition to any seat related contribution. For more information on premium seating, please contact the Spartan Fund. 15
Methods of Support to the Spartan Fund Cash, Credit Cards, and Securities The most common method of giving is through the use of cash and/or credit cards. Checks can be made payable to Michigan State University. Credit cards that are accepted include: Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express. Gifts of stock are also accepted. Endowments Endowment for Spartan Athletics provides a perpetual flow of scholarship or operational funding for specific sport programs. An endowment contribution is both a gift now and for the future because the endowment principal is continually reinvested and a percentage of the accrued interest is used annually for scholarship support. Currently, a full scholarship (including tuition, room and board, books and fees) for a Spartan student athlete can be endowed at $300,000. Partial endowments begin at $30,000. Planned Giving & Bequests You can support the Spartans with a living memorial for yourself, your family, or a former coach or friend of MSU while you are making the future stronger for the Spartans. Through the creative process of planned giving, incorporated within your comprehensive estate plans, you can fulfill philanthropic goals, reduce income taxes, avoid capital gain and estate taxes, retain a life income, increase spendable income, or reduce the costs of estate settlement. You can enjoy the rewards of a planned gift, while also helping Spartan athletics. For more information about planned giving, please contact Mark Schoenl, Director of Major Gifts, in the Spartan Fund. 16
Methods of Support to the Spartan Fund (continued) Matching Gifts Matching gifts are charitable contributions your employer can make on your behalf. Your employer may match your charitable contribution at a 1:1, 2:1, or sometimes a 3:1 ratio. Please check with your employer for information and forms on your company s matching gift policy. If accepted, please enclose the matching gift form with your contribution. Note: Many companies do not match gifts if the donor receives any seat related benefits. If the company elects not to match a seat related gift, the donor is responsible for the remaining contribution. Gift In Kind A gift in kind contribution is considered non monetary items of tangible personal property or other physical assets that represent value to the University. Instead of giving money to buy needed goods and services, the goods and services are gifts themselves. Please contact the Spartan Fund for clarification of what gifts are considered gift in kind. 17
Spartan Fund Donor Priority Spartan Fund members are given the first opportunity to purchase tickets, upgrade their current seats, and receive first priority of seat locations for post season and bowl games when tickets are available. The Donor Priority Chart illustrates the order of allocation for ticket requests. Members of the Spartan Fund, who are also members of a University Donor Society, will be allocated tickets based on the higher of the two levels. Spartan Fund levels are based on annual contributions. Spartan Fund Donor Priority Chart Ambassadors Level $50,000 + Champions Circle $25,000 $49,999 Scholarship Level $10,000 $24,999 Directors Club $5,000 $9,999 Honorary Coaches Club $2,000 $4,999 Captains Club $1,000 $1,999 Green & White Club $500 $999 Sparty Club $250 $499 Ralph Young Club $100 $249 18
