Student Council News! - Mrs. Andrea Barger I d like to congratulate our 2014 Homecoming Court Allie Ferrell, Hannah Johnson, Vanessa Rieman, Courtney Stoltz, Lindsay Werst, Hunter Bernhardt, Zach Dalton, Dakota Fredette, Logan Grieser, and Noah Roper! They were nominated by their peers and rightfully so! These ten ladies and gentleman are great representations of what Arlington stands for! Additionally, a big congratulations goes out to Vanessa Rieman and Zach Dalton for becoming our homecoming queen and king! I d also like to thank everyone who made the parade, the Powder Puff game, and the dance happen. They would not have been a success if it was not for all the volunteers and students who dedicated their time and energy. I sincerely appreciate it. Finally, I would like to give a big shout out to Brenda Blunk and the Corvette Club for giving up their time and their cars for us, Dylan Frazier and Dakota Fredette for announcing the game, Shiley Roether and the male cheerleaders for entertaining us, the coaches, referees, the concession stand workers, the ticket sellers, Mr. Sorensen and the All Brass Marching Band, Mr. Inniger, Decorations Plus, Ali Saad, Mr. and Mrs. Hassler, Mrs. Borkosky, and Mr. and Mrs. Oswald for chaperoning the dance, the IGA parking lot, Mr. Sorg, and all the parents that helped out. 1

The breakfast will be followed by the Veterans Day Assembly in Cable Auditorium at 9:00 A.M. There also will be an elementary assembly at 1:00 P.M. HAUGHT ARLINGTON FEST 2015 Do you remember attending the Arlington Homecoming many years ago? There was an amazing parade that had the streets of Arlington packed full of eager spectators, rides and games, and the best homemade food around, OH the MEMORIES! Let s make more memories and bring this back! A small group of Community members have gathered together a few times to start a plan for Arlington Fest We need your help! There is a Facebook page under Arlington Village Festival where meeting dates and times will be placed. It will take a VILLAGE to make this happen and be successful. You can also contact Lisa Hayes via text at or Beth Waltermire at Arlington Leaders Group A couple of months ago some of the Village Leaders, local Professionals, Community Members and The Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation gathered together to learn about future opportunities that Villages in Hancock County could benefit from through The Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation and the Orton Family Foundation. Since our last meeting we have learned that this grant has been approved. The Village of Arlington has the opportunity to apply for this grant. Only 1 Hancock County Village will be chosen. Meetings for this group are open to the public and we welcome your ideas and Community support. Next meeting will be held on October 3 rd at 11:30 A.M. at Jac & Do s of Arlington. The group meets on a monthly basis if not more often. You will find more information from The Community Foundation on pages 14 and 15. Please contact Brian Essinger or Kevin Haught with any questions or meeting dates/times. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE AUGUST 19, 2014 BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING The meeting was called to order at 7:00 P.M. The agenda was approved as printed. The minutes of the July 22, 2014 board meeting and the financial report for July were approved as printed. 2

3 Julie Taft-Rider addressed the Board The following items were approved by board resolution: approve the agreement with the Midwest Regional Educational Service Center for vision impaired services for the school year at a cost of $6,290.00; approve the school calendar and the following calamity day make-up days for the school year (if needed) in this order February 16, March 30 and 31, April1 and 6, 2015; approve Madison Stroub as substitute custodian, substitute aide, and substitute cafeteria worker for the school year; approve Vikki Bell as the mentor teacher for the school year; accept a donation of $75.00 from Valerie Sanders in memory of her sister Denise Tebbe. This donation will be used to buy books for the first grade classrooms; accept a donation of $ from the class of This donation will be used to purchase items for the new kindergarten classroom; approve a quote from Aunt Millie's Bakery to provide bread products to the district for the school year; approve Reiter Dairy to provide dairy products to the district for the school year; approve Beth Wallwey as substitute cafeteria worker for the school year; approve the agreement with the Juvenile Detention Center/Juvenile Residential Center of Northwest Ohio for the school year as follows: $64.00 per student per day for our students assigned JDC, $64.00 per student per day for our students assigned to JRC; approve the following supplemental positions for the school year: Rachel Hunter, 7th Grade Volleyball; Jimmy Nicholson, 1/4 Athletic Director; Ed Boutwell, Vocational Agriculture; approve the following as substitute bus drivers for the school year: Aaron Niese, Dennis Von Stein, and Dennis Beard; approve five (5) per diem work days to MaryBeth Hutcheson (High School Guidance) from August 1 - August 8, 2014; approve the employment of Ed Boutwell as Vocational Agriculture Substitute Teacher for the school year contingent upon subsequent receipt by the Arlington Board of Education of a report from BCI and FBI that is not in violation of Ohio Law and a substitute teaching license. Mr. Boutwell will be paid at the negotiated per diem rate as a retired teacher; approve Angie Spridgeon as a consultant to the treasurer paid at $35.00 per hour on an as needed basis. The meeting was adjourned at 8:48 P.M. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE SEPTEMBER 18, 2014 BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING The meeting was called to order at 7:00 P.M. The agenda was approved as modified. The minutes of the August 19, 2014 board meeting and the financial report for August were approved as printed. The Board approved the permanent appropriations at the Fund Level for FY 15. Julie Taft-Ride addressed the Board. The following items were approved by board resolution: accept the Fiscal Year 15 Federal Title Grants. These grant funds are an integral part of providing the staffing to meet the state s student performance standards and the supplemental services needed for special education programs at the Arlington Local School District. Without this grant funding, the Board of Education would be unable to continue these programs and would eliminate services to our students unless a new source of funding is made available from non-state and non-local funding; approve Dodi Newcomer, Beth Wallwey and Mary Wells as substitute aides for the school year; approve Lukrecija Baltmiskyte and Maya Kondo, foreign exchange students, to attend Arlington High School for the school year; approve FMLA leave for Stacie Pore from September 5-19, 2014; approve FMLA leave for Tyna Harvey from September 25-November 6, 2014; approve the changes to the High School Staff Handbook; approve the F.F.A. trip to Louisville, KY for the National Convention over October 29 - November 2, 2014, using charter transportation; approve Dawn Gault as substitute custodian for the school year; approve to pay four high school teachers, $20.00 per hour for instruction time (each two hours total) and $20.00 per hour planning time (each one hour total) for the fall ACT Intervention Program. This program is to be funded with local money; approve the following supplemental contracts: Nick Inbody, Assistant Varsity Boys Basketball; Mike Inbody, Volunteer Assistant Boys Basketball Volunteer; Steve Inbody, 7 th Grade Boys Basketball; Jake Leonard, 8 th Grade Boys Basketball; Doug Oates, Freshmen Boys Basketball; Jimmy Nicholson, Assistant Varsity Girls Basketball; Katie Hunter, 8 th Grade Girls Basketball; P.D. The sudden change in the weather has definitely signaled the arrival of the Fall season. Our outdoor activities are starting to wind down, with many indoor activities quickly approaching. Be sure to check the Upcoming Events section in this newsletter and online at Homecoming Highlights Homecoming Week 2014 was an overwhelming success! From an exciting parade to a competitive Powder Puff Football game to an electric night of football against Riverdale and of course, the crowning of Queen Vanessa Rieman and King Zachary Dalton the entire week could not have gone any better! It all culminated with a fun-filled evening on Saturday at the Homecoming Dance. Congratulations to the entire Homecoming Court Vanessa Rieman, Allie Ferrell, Hannah Johnson, Courtney Stoltz, Lindsay Werst, Zachary Dalton, Hunter Bernhardt, Dakota Fredette, Logan Grieser, and Noah Roper! Congratulations also to the Freshman Class of 2018, whose float was judged the most Out of This World! In fact, all the floats looked great on the front lawn of the school all week long. National Honor Society/Junior National Honor Society Induction ceremonies for National Honor Society and National Junior Honor Society will be taking place within the next month. Congratulations to those students who are selected for this prestigious recognition! We are proud of you and all your achievements in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Drive 4UR School We would like to say Thank You to Reineke Family Dealerships for once again sponsoring our 8 th Grade fundraiser for the annual Washington, D.C. trip. The Drive 4UR School was held on Saturday, October 4, at Reineke Ford Lincoln, Findlay. Due to the cold, damp weather our students were unable to hold the Car Wash, but we did generate some extra donations from the Bake Sale and other food items that were available that day. A great, big Thank You also goes to all those parents who helped plan, organize, promote, bake, grill, and volunteer for this event. Parent-Teacher Conferences Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held from 5:30 P.M. 9:00 P.M. on Thursday, November 20, and Monday, November 24, and from 9:00 A.M. 3:00 P.M. on Tuesday, November 25. Teacher In-Service will be held on Monday, November 24. Students will not be in attendance at school the week of Monday, November 24, through Friday, November 28, for inservice, conferences, and in celebration of the Thanksgiving holiday. Counselor Corner Mrs. MaryBeth Hutcheson It's hard to believe that October is upon us already! Students have been hard at work and the year is solidly underway. A special thanks to Camp Fire of Northwest Ohio and our seventh grade students for their work with the Portable Challenge Course to help our students bond and grow. This month is National Bullying Prevention month and we plan on recognizing that with weekly activities on Wednesdays in the cafeteria as well as participating in October 22 National Unity Day where everyone is asked to wear something orange in support of bullying prevention. College representatives continue to visit, and all seniors should keep in mind that now is the time to be narrowing those choices so that all fouryear college possibilities may be applied for by that November 30th deadline. On Tuesday, October 28 at 7:00 P.M. will be a meeting for all junior and senior parents for an overview of the year ahead, as well as a Financial Aid night offered by the Office of Student Financial Aid of Bowling Green State University. The end of the month will bring the first quarter to a close and those first report cards are scheduled to go home on October 31st. Additionally that last week will be Ohio Graduation Testing for any junior or senior who has not passed all five sections. SPROUSE CAFETERIA TALK LIGHTS In order to give students more time to eat their lunches this year, we have had to increase the number of students who eat at the same time. As you can imagine, with over 130 students in the cafeteria at one time the natural consequence would be an increase in the noise level. We absolutely want our students to enjoy this time and visit with their friends but we also need to make sure that the noise level is kept at a level that is healthy for everyone and doesn't disrupt classes. One way that we are trying to help decrease the noise level is by using Talk Lights in the cafeteria. Talk Lights are lights that look like traffic lights and signal to students when they are talking at a safe volume. The light remains green when the noise level is at an acceptable level and turns yellow when the noise gets too loud. The yellow light signals to the students to bring their voices back down. If the students do not adjust their voices, the light will begin to blink, indicating to the students a more urgent need to bring their voices down. If the light turns red, this indicates that the noise is at an unsafe and unacceptable level. When this happens we are going to ask the students to keep eating silently for the next 2 minutes. After a couple of minutes of silence, the students can begin talking again in a much quieter fashion. We have tested this procedure for over a week and made adjustments to the sensors to fit our expectations. We have already seen a big improvement and the students have been very cooperative. I have even had students tell me that they are glad we have these lights because now they can talk to their friends without yelling. ELEMENTARY PICTURE RETAKE DAY - WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 15 The elementary picture retake day is scheduled for Wednesday, October 15. If your child missed the first picture day in September, or you are not satisfied with the first set, this is your opportunity for re-takes. If you did not like the first set, be sure to send the entire original package back to school with your child. They must have them in hand to give to the photographer for re-takes. If you would like to purchase pictures this time, have your student pick up an order form in the office. FALL HARVEST PARTIES Our Fall Harvest parties will be held on Friday, October 31 in the afternoon. As we ve done in past years, we will hold these parties without the traditional Halloween costumes. 5

6 PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES Parent/Teacher conferences are scheduled as follows: Thursday, November 20 5:30 9:00 P.M. Monday, November 24 5:30 9:00 P.M. Tuesday, November 25 9:00 A.M. 3:00 P.M. Please note that there are conferences on Thursday evening rather than the Tuesday evening before Thanksgiving. Students will not attend school on Monday, November 24. We hope to meet with all parents at these important and valuable meetings. Each child will bring home a letter with a scheduled appointment for your individual conference. Please take the time to confirm this appointment with your child's teacher immediately. If you are unable to attend on the day or time scheduled, please communicate with your child's teacher so that a suitable time can be arranged. We will have evening conferences scheduled on both Thursday, November 20 and Monday, November 24. We hope this will better accommodate the higher demand for evening times for our parents. We look forward to seeing you and sharing insight as to your child's progress. NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS MONDAY, NOVEMBER 24 Students will not attend school on Monday, November 24 due to a teacher in-service. GRADE CARDS The end of the first grading period is Friday, October 24 and the grade cards will be sent home on Thursday, October 30. Please contact your child s teacher with any concerns you may have with your child s progress. FALL FESTIVAL The PTO would like to thank everyone who came to Friday's Fall Festival! We hope you all had a great time. We especially want to thank our hard-working volunteers and everyone who helped make it happen through donations of time, money and goods. You make it all possible! Please consider becoming involved in this important organization! GIFTED According to the state of Ohio, a student who scores as good or better than 95% of his/her peers (95th percentile) on a nationally normed test, is considered "gifted." At Arlington and throughout the county we use two ODE approved assessments called the Iowa Test of Basic Skills and the Cognitive Abilities Test to identify gifted students. We administer these assessments at the end of a student's 2nd grade year and at the beginning of their 5th grade year. These tests measure a student's achievement and ability in Math, Science, Reading, Language Arts, Social Studies, and Cognitive ability. If a student's score places him/her in the gifted category, parents will be notified. In addition to those assessments, if a teacher believes a student may be gifted in the performing or visual arts, that teacher may make a referral for that student to be evaluated for giftedness. In Hancock County, 5th grade identified gifted students (those at the 95th percentile or higher) are invited to participate in four half-day retreats throughout the school year. More information about gifted identification can be found on our website or parents can pick up information at the school offices. 6

I wanted to take an opportunity to introduce myself as an intern school counselor at Arlington Schools for the school year. I am a second year Master s student at Bowling Green State University (BGSU) in the School Counseling program. This year at Arlington, I will be serving in much the same way that a student-teacher would with their cooperating teacher, although working in a school counselor s role instead. Mrs. Sherry Heacock will be my supervising counselor and we will be working closely together during my time at Arlington. I am a native of Ravenna, OH, and have taught previously in Oxford and Celina, OH, prior to being involved as a substitute teacher in the Arlington district last year. It has been an encouraging beginning to the school year and I look forward to serving your students as the year moves forward. 8 ARLINGTON PRESCHOOL OPENINGS Do you ever wonder if your child's language or speech is on track for his/her age? Do you ever worry that your child's social or behavioral skills could impact his/her learning? Does your child have trouble using scissors, drawing, or writing? Does your child struggle to jump, run, hop, balance on one foot, or catch a ball? We can schedule a home visit or set up an appointment at the school to complete a developmental screening for your child. The Alliance Rewards program enables families to raise money for their school fees as well as funds for teacher minigrants and other items to enhance the classroom experience. You buy cards from the Academic Alliance at face value that have been procured at a discount, and the difference is used to pay your child s school fees (or go toward their D.C. or N.Y.C. trip) and to buy items outside of the operating budget of the school. Since 2006, the Alliance has funded over $112,000 in equipment, trips, programs, etc., for students in grades K-12. Gift cards for many local retailers can be purchased on Fridays from 2:00 until 3:30 P.M. inside the new gym doors. These include IGA, Meijer, Walmart, BP, Speedway, Taco Bell, Texas Roadhouse, Lowe s, Menards, Bath & Body Works and more! Our members will be dressed for the occasion and will be going from door to door with their little red wagons. All donations will be greatly appreciated and will go to help families in need in our community. Those seeking more information on the Good Hope Food Pantry can contact Pastor Steve at The pantry is open on Tuesday mornings for those in need and all names are kept confidential. HANCOCK COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT Children in preschool, kindergarten, first, third, fifth, seventh and ninth grades are now being screened for vision and hearing by the Hancock County Public Health nurses. These screenings are done in compliance with the Ohio Department of Health. The state feels that a program of early identification, diagnosis and treatment of children with hearing or vision disorders is a necessary and vital component of all child health programs. Early detection and treatment of these disorders give children the opportunity to develop educationally, emotionally and socially. If a problem is identified you will be notified by phone or mail. If you have any questions regarding the screenings in your school please call Additional vaccines continue to be added to the school requirements, the most recent being the Tdap for students entering the 7 th grade. Along with the Tdap vaccine we would encourage you to also consider the meningitis and chickenpox dose 2 vaccines for any child age 11 through 18. We are seeing a resurgence of pertussis (whooping cough) which is the reason for the Tdap requirement. We also encourage flu vaccine for all students and family members. These vaccines are available at your physician s office or at the health department.
