2 Chairman's Message Greetings! This is the first issue of TouchPoint under the newly-formed Jalan Besar Town Council, which comprises Jalan Besar GRC and Potong Pasir SMC. The composition of our divisions may have changed but you have our assurance that we remain committed to building on what has been established over the past years. We will continue to work on strengthening our community and kampung in the city under the Jalan Besar Town 5-Year Concept Master Plan for 2016 to You have an integral part to play in this master plan and making our estate a model living environment. Share your thoughts and feedback on town issues, such as faulty lightings and other equipment, indiscriminate disposal of unwanted items along common corridors and void decks, and potential mosquitoes breeding areas, through any of our feedback channels. Better yet, let us know if you have ideas on how to keep our common areas clean and clutter-free. And if you experience great service along the way, keep us posted so that we can encourage our service folks who give their best in serving you and keeping our estates clean and running smoothly. Together, we can make Jalan Besar Town a cosy kampung one that all of us can enjoy living in. 4 People 当我们在一起 The more we get together J alan Besar GRC and Potong Pasir SMC's Cultural Night, held at Geylang West CC on March 27, kept participants happy and shutterbugs busy with multi-cultural dances, instrumental performances, games, and a mini float procession. The MPs for Jalan Besar GRC and Potong Pasir SMC joined residents in the activities and to remember Singapore s Founding Prime Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew. It was a trip down memory lane for Ms Denise Phua and 300 Kampong Glam residents as they watched Jack Neo's Long Long Time Ago on March 6. The director and the movie's cast made a special appearance at the screening, much to the delight of the residents. Residents also enjoyed the sequel, Long Long Time Ago 2, at screenings on April 23 and 24. TouchPoint 4

5 People Assoc Prof Yaacob Ibrahim sending auspicious Lunar New Year greetings to residents during Kolam Ayer's Celebration Dinner on February 27. It was a night to remember for the guests as the scrumptious food, song and dance performances, and witty banter ushered in the Year of the Monkey in style. Dr Lily Neo giving a flu jab to a resident. On January 16, 100 elderly residents living in Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng benefitted from a free health screening and flu vaccination held at Kim Seng CC. Mr Sitoh Yih Pin and residents moving to the music. Everyone has such a blast during Potong Pasir's monthly sing-alongs there's gutsy singing, spontaneous dancing and a sense of bonding. Held every last Sunday of the month at Potong Pasir CC, the event features pop and folk songs. Congratulations to all students from Whampoa who received the Edusave awards presented by Mr Heng Chee How at a ceremony on January 31. Each student was also given a stalk of flower to present to their parents and guardians in appreciation of their love and care. TouchPoint 5

Having fried and sold youtiao since his teenage years, Koh Cheng Sai said youtiao is also eaten with bak kut teh (pork rib soup), laksa, kaya, and chilli. Some of my customers buy youtiao to dip in laksa gravy. Indonesian customers like to eat them with chilli while Malaysians love them with kaya, said the 63-year-old owner of Xi De Li, whose three children now run the family business. Xi De Li began as a pushcart stall run by Koh s grandmother along Chin Swee Road in the 1920s. Over the years, it moved to several places before settling down in Clementi in The business was handed down the generations and has now expanded to more than 20 stalls, including franchisees. Its stalls can be found in Food Republic outlets in VivoCity, Suntec City and Parkway Parade. Every piece of youtiao is hand-made from scratch using only premium ingredients, with no artificial food additives, preservatives or monosodium glutamate. Besides youtiao, Xi De Li also offers a whole range of fried delights, included salted bun, butterfly bun and glutinous rice bun. However, the best sellers are the youtiao and soy milk combination. It s the favourite among our customers. The two go really well together, said Koh.
