2 Dear Residents and Friends On 23 March 2015, we came together as a nation to mourn the passing of our founding father, Mr Lee Kuan Yew. His legacy; The HDB homes we reside in and the ever-present greenery that surrounds us. It was his foresight and belief that home ownership provided us as citizens, a sense of equity, that we owned a part of the city, hence making us care more for the community. We will continue to honour Mr Lee s legacy, through our services to you, our residents. One of the ways we are doing so, is through the implementation of a new SMS customer feedback survey. When our officers respond to your feedback, you will receive a SMS asking you to rate both the overall service, as well as our officers response to your request. Your honest feedback will help us to improve our services, and will help us recognise officers who have performed well. I am also pleased to update you on the Rat Attack programme that our Town Council initiated since last November. Together with the pest control management agency, we managed to eliminate 90% of the rat burrows in our entire constituency, culling a total of 1037 rats and destroying 912 rat burrows before ushering in the New Year. The programme will continue and last till the end of For our 2014/2015 financial year, we embarked on a total of 72 improvement projects costing up to $4.8 million. These projects included the upgrading of our town s fitness facilities (such as jogging tracks and fitness corners), as well as provisions of sheltered linkways. We trust that these enhancements will improve both your fitness and commuting experience around our town. Legasi beliau; rumah-rumah HDB yang kita duduki dan suasana hijau yang sentiasa mengelilingi kita. Keyakinan dan pandangan ke hadapan beliau bahawa pemilikan rumah telah memberikan kita sebagai rakyat, ekuiti, bahawa kita memiliki sebahagian dari bandar ini, justeru membuat kita lebih mengambil berat tentang komuniti kita. Kami akan meneruskan legasi Encik Lee, melalui perkhidmatan kami kepada anda, penduduk kami. Satu daripada cara untuk kami berbuat demikian, ialah melalui pelaksanaan tinjauan maklum balas pelanggan SMS. Apabila pegawai kami menjawab maklum balas anda, anda akan menerima dua SMS yang meminta anda menilai perkhidmatan keseluruhan kami, serta jawapan pegawai kami kepada permohonan anda. 3 Which blocks will sparkle this year? For a third consecutive year, the Town Council s My Block Sparkles contest has been encouraging residents to take ownership of the common areas around our apartments, as well as fostering a communal bond between the residents, grassroots leaders and the Town Council. Other than the usual Cleanest Block category, we have a new award category the Most Improved Block award. This new category challenges the residents in six blocks to come together and make the best improvement to the cleanliness of their common areas. How are blocks being judged? Blocks are judged based on two dimensions, namely, physical and social. For the physical dimension, our judges look at the level of cleanliness in the common areas. They also check if the common corridors are being cluttered or obstructed by bulky or fire hazardous items, and most importantly, if there are potential killer litter items within the block. For the social dimension, judges will look at the efforts that have gone into keeping the blocks clean by the working committees and residents. These include efforts such as displaying posters and the organising of a block washing day. Clean, Clear & Save! Aside from receiving a plaque that will be placed in the lift lobby of the winning blocks, all residents within the block will also stand a chance to win a one-off S&CC rebate ranging from $5 to $20 in recognition of their efforts! Keeping our common areas clean and clear does have its rewards! Let s work together! Keeping our blocks clean and clutter free is definitely the responsibility of everybody, and not just that of our conservancy workers. That s the message that My Block Sparkles hopes to communicate across to everyone every year. Let us all work together to make our blocks sparkling clean! 3

4 Dear Residents, It has been a great year so far. Early this year, we re-opened our newly renovated Nanyang Community Centre together with the Launch of Nanyang event. We had the privilege of having our Prime Minister, Mr Lee Hsien Loong, as the Guest-of-Honour at the events, as he officiated both the opening, as well as the countdown to our nation s 50th birthday on August the 9th With that said, let me take this opportunity to thank all you residents for your support, as well as to wish Singapore a Happy National Day! Linkway at Block 862 Jurong West Street 81 Linkway and drop-off porch between Blocks 724 to 731 Married with two children, Chia Hsing identifies and helps promising small and medium entreprises raise funds by listing on the Singapore Exchange. When he s not crunching numbers or spending time with his family, he puts in hours doing volunteer work. I started volunteering in a small way in 2008 at St. Andrew s Community Hospital and since 2009, I have been helping out at Ren Ci Hospital. In 2011, I started volunteering with the grassroots in Nee Soon. From late 2014 until very recently, I was helping out at Punggol East. Chia Hsing has learned a lot through volunteering and he s found the root of volunteer work to be quite simple. There was a time when I was helping to transport a wheelchair-bound man between St Andrew s Community Hospital and Changi General Hospital. He is a double amputee (both legs amputated at the knees) due to complications from diabetes. We struck up a conversation along the way and I found that rather than feeling sorry for himself, he was very grateful just to be alive. His attitude towards his circumstances left a strong impression on me. Such encounters in the course of my volunteering has made me appreciate more of what I have and to have a better perspective of life. I find volunteer work very meaningful and it really gives me great satisfaction to be able to help make a difference to someone s life. Even when sometimes I am not in a position to help, I think it is important to give a listening ear and show empathy. Sometimes the concern we show is enough to help them find the strength to face the problems. People just need to know they are not alone. His new role in Nanyang is also familiar to him. I grew up in Jurong. My father, who was a gardener before he retired and my mother, who is a homemaker, still live in Jurong. I also spent my undergraduate years at NTU, so it feels like a homecoming of sorts. I am excited to be returning to my roots and looking forward to serving a community that I have a certain bond with. 5

6 Tell the Town Council how they re doing by SMS As of 1 April 2015, the Town Council has introduced a new SMS survey to collect feedback on its service quality the first Town Council to do so. After the Town Council has completed a task for you, you may receive two SMSes requesting your feedback. Reply with a number from 1 to 5 to tell them how satisfied you were with their service. 7 Lee Kuan Yew In remembrance of Mr Lee Kuan Yew, our MP, Mr Alex Yam, worked with his team to create the black ribbon graphic that many adopted. You may have seen it all over your friends Facebook profiles, and may even have used it during our period of mourning. The Chua Chu Kang Town Council would like to thank Mr Alex Yam and his team for giving us a simple way to come together in our grief. EASE (Direct Application) What is EASE? The Enhancement for Active Seniors (EASE) programme was introduced to improve the comfort and enhance the mobility of seniors living in HDB flats. What are the improvement items offered? Where technically feasible Slip-resistant treatment to toilet floor tiles How much will I need to pay? The maximum payable amount by Singapore Citizen flat owners is between $125 and $312.50, depending on flat type and improvement items installed. Who is eligible? Singapore Citizen flat owners with a family member in the household aged: 65 years old and above; or 60 to 64 years old who requires assistance for one or more of the *Activities of Daily Living (ADL). * ADL is a term used in healthcare to refer to daily self-care activities within an individual's place of residence. These activities include washing/ bathing, dressing, feeding, toileting, mobility and transferring. How do I apply? Community response can be enhanced to render assistance to cardiac arrest victims in our residential heartlands through the installation of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) at the lift lobby of HDB blocks throughout the island. A Community Project by: SAVE-A-LIFE INITIATIVE What happens when someone suddenly collapses in front of you? If this person is unconscious and not breathing normally, it is a medical emergency that requires immediate response. Such a response can be delivered by anyone. That s what the Dispatcher-Assisted first REsponder (DARE) programme wants everyone to understand. In a 45-min hands-on session, participants get to learn about Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and the use of an AED. The focus of the programme is to get familiar with the steps of calling 995 for help and cooperating with the medical dispatcher over the phone.
